It's amazing to witness not one, but two people who had zero clue that Vader was Luke's Father. Most have already heard the famous line, but to see the look on both of your faces from the minute he said "I am your Father" to the moment Luke reached out to Leia for help, was awesome. You guys were so shocked, and yet still processing everything. A true first time reaction. Can't wait to see the rest of your reactions from this series. You guys are in it now, time to do them all.

The initial agreement Lando made with Vader was just "we're going to keep your friends and some other guys hostage for a couple hours to lure someone you've never heard of into a trap, then we'll let them go". It's not THAT insane he'd agree with it to keep his people safe.

Agreed. People get too upset with Lando. Back when the movie came out Billy Dee Williams would get yelled at by elementary kids when he dropped off his kids at school. They thought he was the bad guy. I never felt that way growing up with Star Wars.
@leoda_lion4107

Right, he even said it, he don't know Luke. Lando wanted to keep his operation legit, and keep the Empire out. He don't care about Luke, he doesn't know him. He was like okay, Lord Vader set a trap for him. And that is all that he is interested in., and they are gonna bounce once they get what they want. TBH, it was real genius of Vader, to NOT keep looking for Luke, and have Luke come to him. And the movie just shows how impulsive Luke still is at this point, he's not matured yet.

Lando is my favorite Star Wars character. He never betrayed Han, Lando's story just took place off screen so it would be a surprise when Vader sprung his trap. Lando was the President of a floating city the size of Chicago. Responsible for the wellbeing of thousands of people. Vader showed up with enough fire power to destroy the place. You also have to remember what happens to people that anger Vader. Lando was told that Vader had no real interest in his friends, and that once he had Luke he would leave and Lando's friends could stay. If you recall, Han was trying to land and port authority kept denying them. Even the cops in the ship behind them shot at them to try to drive them off. That was Lando's doing as well. Then when he met Han at the landing platform, he acted all kinds of strange. That was an attempt to tell Han to stay on his guard. He was really trying to do the best he could for everybody involved. He ran out of options for a peaceful resolution, so he rebelled. Lando is a good dude.

I like when people give him crap for wearing what looks to be Han's clothing before he leaves. It's not like he had time to pack a bad or stop at the Gap on the way out. Literally left home under fire rushing a dude to the hospital. And the popsicle doesn't really need those clothes right now.

The saddest thing about Luke abandoning his training was that it accomplished absolutely nothing. Leia and Chewie escaped without needing his help at all, Han was still captured, and all Luke managed was to make the escape harder, lose a hand, and learn a truth he was nowhere near ready to hear.

Well Luke learned a lot through all his failures in this movie. TLJ fans insist that Luke was an "ego maniac" who "needed to be brought down a peg" 🙄, but the importance of ESB is literally that he learned all those lessons already in ESB. If he had gone down the path he THOUGHT of as "heroic", he was sure to end up like Darth Vader. The whole point of this movie is to disabuse him of that notion so he can realize what being a Jedi is really all about. This breakdown is really my favorite *(contains spoilers)* kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKfPiIapj9x_pJI

Thing is, though Luke "won" the fight in his vision he still lost the test by choosing to fight in the first place, which was the quick and easy path a.k.a. the Dark Side of the Force. That's why Yoda told him that he didn't need his weapons and that the only thing he'd find in the cave was what he took with him, and why he ultimately saw himself inside Vader's helmet. His vision was telling him to stop being reckless and ruled by his emotions or the Dark Side will take him.

Viewed from Lando's perspective, he's the owner of Cloud city which has a population living on it. He clearly cares about the population, and strikes a deal to satisfy the empire which no doubt arrived unannounced and in force. The deal is in the interests of keeping the people safe - when he sees that it's a lie, and that the empire will annex the city, he makes an announcement to the city to evacuate, whilst trying to undo what the empire had done. Lando may have taken action that betrays people he knows, but his deal probably saved countless lives, and he's actually a real hero.

This is One of the best reactions to this movie on KZbin. Excellent job you two. So glad you’re getting to see what us older guys (and gals) saw in the movie theater when these 3 movies were released in 1977, 1980, and 1983 In 1980 I was a 6 year old kid, and I remember my dad taking me (and my older brother who was 8) to the theater to see this movie. Even as a 6 year old boy, I remember sitting in the theater with my little legs and feet dangling over the chair, as I watched in utter amazement. There were so many kids in that theater, lol. And all us kids were cheering and crying, and laughing, and so on. New school movies, music, and TV, just don’t “hit” the same way as old school. Your question at about 5:41 about crawling into a Taun Taun to survive the cold was tackled by a show on the Discovery channel called MythBusters. I tried to find it here on KZbin but didn't have any luck. They replicated the conditions as best they could based on Star Wars info they found on Wookie Pedia I think it was. They determined it would work for a short time, as said in the movie "until I get the shelter up" was what they were testing.

It's an old trope and it appears in novels dating back to the 18th and 17th century of people doing this in inhospitable conditions, either in the desert or cold temperatures and although it's not proven through historical documentation that it was actually done, supported by any evidence whatsoever, in real life it was a widespread known technique for survival during storms like sandstorms, blizzards or general cold temperature. It's very likely at least one person in each of these conditions ever did it and it is reasonable that someone might have tried it as a last resource in their direst moments but still, it seems to have been very effective if the story on the revenant is actually true, at least with larger animals. I've read it in a few novels but the ones that come to mind are in The Revenant with the bear and in a camel in a novel called Tuareg by a Spanish author. Also, one of the first times I came in contact with this concept was in a Bear Grills episode of Man vs. Wild, that's what that show was called right?

The absolute shock... the audible gasp from the entire theater, all at once, including my own "what!"..... when Vader said THAT line... will never leave my memory. It is perhaps the greatest movie reveals / plot twist in the history of motion pictures. Do you know how hard it is NOT to know that Luke Skywalker is the son of Darth Vader? Most young people your age who've never seen Star Wars still know that Luke Skywalker is the son of Darth Vader. It's baked into popular culture. It's so nice to witness young people who still don't know this secret, and witness it for the very first time. @ryanwalker8843

Not entirely true. George said 'But my feeling was some time had past, they've been in the Rebellion fighting, that kind of thing, so the change was justifiable. There's a scene in the film where Mark gets beat up by the monster, which helps even more, but that wasn't really the meaning of why we wrote the monster in the beginning. We needed something to keep the film suspenseful at the beginning while the Empire is looking for them.' What Mark said was 'they used a lot of the real scars to build upon" the make up used for the scene.' So yes the scene is used as a convenient in universe explanation, and the injuries put where they were on Luke's face for this reason. It's not the only reason the scene was made though. They already had the idea for a monster attack, and then thought plus it will make a good excuse for his scars.

Fun fact: George Lucas had to add that scene with the Wampa (ice monster) at the beginning of filming because Mark Hamill suffered a motorcycle accident months beforehand and his face had to be surgically reconstructed. The scene was added to explain why Luke's face looks a little different in the first film; because he got attacked by a wild animal.

Carrie Fisher was 19 when Star Wars was made so about 22 in Empire. The studio told her she had too much baby fat in the first one (?) so she dropped some weight for the 2nd. Luke looks different because between movies Mark Hamill survived a horrific car crash and had to have half his face rebuilt. A lot of people argue over whether this is why Lucas put the Wampa attack in. His face is covered, the Wampa swipes his claw over his face and voila: New Luke. -Hamill refuses to acknowledge or deny this plot point so you'll have to draw your own conclusions ;).

One thing that's always been consistent throughout the entire franchise- movies, games, novels and comics- is that you can always tell how serious Vader is taking a fight based on his lightsaber grip. If he's using a two handed grip he's being serious. If he's using a one handed he's not even trying. Note that against Kenobi he used a two handed grip and against Luke he used a one handed grip.

It was great to see someone surprised by the twist of Luke's father. However, the one that I remember being bigger from the first time watching this, and that is just as likely to be spoiled, is who Yoda is. The way that he plays up his silliness to test who Luke is as a person and to reveal his anger is so brilliant and then the shift to his true personality. I was so shocked the first time that I saw that.

The original screenwriter for this was Leigh Brackett, one of the VERY few female pulp fiction (original meaning of the term, not the movie) writers. My favorite book by her is the trilogy the Book of Skaith. I am pretty sure her script for this got scrapped, but they kept her in the credits. She also helped write the screenplay for the Film Noir movie "The Big Sleep" with Humphrey Bogart. She is a legend. And Luke looks different because the actor had been in a major accident with facial reconstructive surgery. They tried to incorporate it in with the monster attacking him. But you can see it before. And the big reveal really blew everyone away. They kept it pretty well under wraps.

Everyone misunderstands the cave scene. When asked what is in there, "Only what you take with you." In other words, your Fear. Luke was facing his Fear of Vader, and failed the test in the cave. The foreshadowing of having his face, in the Vader mask, was to show what he could become. About the ice planet- it was filmed in Norway. And they had literally one of the worst blizzards that year ever recorded. And that is what you see of Luke running around in the miserable cold.

One thing that these movies did that hasn't really been done on this scale before is to show advanced technology props that were styled to look old and battered, rather than clean and futuristic like so many sci-fi films had done. It does a LOT towards making the world feel authentic and lived-in!

Read a comment lately that pointed out how they never say SW is a 'Once Upon A Time' fairy-tale. It does start with: A long time ago in a galaxy far far away. The comment said that Galactic Wars may even have taken place, like 100 000 years ago, far from our Earth. And their impact could be felt here, in our time, even Princess Lea spirit continuing its journey. Nothing ever 'dies' said the guy, the atoms just rearrange themselves, and the Force remains. Gives one pause for thought, anyway.

Fun lore tidbit. The reason Vader was obsessed with finding Luke is because in one of the canon comics between Episode 4 and 5 Boba Fett uncovers that Luke's last name is Skywalker which basically tells Vader "The pilot that blew up the Death Star is your son"

The original script of the film the line was: "Obi-Wan KILLED your father." The writer of the film died before they could do a second draft of the script, and George Lucas did it on his own. Darth Vader in a mix of German and Dutch literally means Dark Father, and Lucas decided to make Vader, Luke's father. When Leia tells Han; "I love you", Han in the script said, I love you too. But, Harrison Ford knowing that Han is a rogue, arrogant guy improvised the response, "I know". The director and Lucas loved the response and kept it in. So, refreshing to see someone who DOESNT know the famous twist at the end. Makes it a lot more fun. Love your reactions, keep up the good work!
