The reason 3PO had a red arm, is told in the force awaken one shot comic. 3PO and several other droids crash land an desert planet, after turning on their ship tracking beacon. Slowly some begin. To shut down from lack of power. Later it starts raining acid after finding a cave only 3PO and red protocol droid survived, even though 3PO lost his arm. They both shared their thoughts on existing and 3po telling about his adventures and glimpses of erased memorie they inspire the other droid to run out to the ship and same the beacon before its destroyed. But one he made it back but he was severely damaged and after saying his final words for 3po to survive he shut down. And 3PO kept his arm a memory of he lost friend.

I agree with out on Capt. Phasma, I think the Finn and Stormtrooper fight at Maz Canada's cantina should had been Finn and Phasma. I think it would have 1. not made her look like a puss, 2. it would have said "And this is WHY she's a captain" But maybe with 8 and 9, with her getting raked over the coals in 7, this will give her motives to hunt down Finn and the gang for various reasons. mostly her reasons but some by the first order. but it will bring depth to her.
