The Je'daii Order did use swords once. They would be imbued with the Force through alchemy, and were much stronger than any type of vibroblade I've heard of in the Star Wars universe. Force-imbued blades were used up until around the first great schism, when they were replaced by the Rakatan forcesaber.

I'm going to display my nerdiness for a minute, before the Jedi and Sith had lightsabers, they had Cortosis-weave blades, the Jedi had katana shaped blades like this one, and Sith more normally had double edged one handed swords (think of a longer Cinquedea sword) and both had double bladed staffs. All of these were strong enough to defend against a lightsaber and deflect lasers. Although they couldn't sear through metal, they could very well stand against any lightsaber. The Sith are more aggressive so their blades would be more deadly overall especially if enhanced with Sith alchemy. In the modern Star Wars movies, Sith war blades haven't been used for about 3,000 or so years at this point so, yea, I'm sure there are some amongst the rubble of Korriban.

To all the people still whining: -Tony and his team are pursuing other opportunities right now, but have said they still plan on doing Man at Arms stuff. Quit acting like they'll never come back or that they owe you some sort of insanely overcomplicated anime/video game weapon. -Did anyone honestly expect them to forge a real katana blade? Even if they had all the proper tools and skills to do that, it would take way longer than would be necessary. And I didn't see anyone complain when Tony 'cheated' on the Muramasa blade. There is just one problem with that. Aluminum can be anodized, not steel! Steel can be tempered to a specific color based on the temperature that the freshly ground steel is tempered at.

For all the people complaining how this isn't a real katana blade, did you not see the differential heat treating? The traditional wetstone polishing? Just because it isn't folded doesn't mean it isn't a katana. Katanas were folded because the steel found in japan used to make katanas were too impure, so the blade had to be folded several times to remove the impurities and spread the carbon content across the blade. The differential heat treating with the clay (like they did in the video) meant that the core of the blade was softer so the blade could bend instead of breaking when under stress, while the blade is harder meaning it will take a sharper edge and last longer. The folding is not required. The differential heat treating is. Still, the handle looks uncomfortable.

Traditionally they would also use 2 pieces of iron of different carbon contents to make the spine and edge. The difference in hardness caused the signature bend in traditional katanas because the two pieces would cool at different times when quenched.

Christopher VandenBosch there was no variation in the type of steel used in any part of the blade. The composition was uniform throughout the blade. the variation in hardness comes from the ingenious use of the clays and the whatever it is they coat the blade with during the hardening and tempering process. Also not folding the steel here is the way to go because our modern steels are so pure and clean that folding them just increases the risk of weak spots and inclusions. The only reason it was done back then was to mix the steel so bad spots would be sandwiched to good spots making it more uniform for the hardening processes. Also it helps clean out impurities

The low carbon hocho-tetsu is folded several times by itself to purify it. This produces the soft metal called shingane used as the core of the blade. The tamahagane is forged into a single plate and the whole thing is forge welded into a single block called the age-kitae. That block is what they then use to make the katana. Also what they traditionally used was iron not steel. They could not create/control forges hot enough to produce steel which is why they implemented the long folding process. What they end up with is similar to medium grade steel made today. I was simply trying to state that there is more to traditional katana making than folding and applying a paste. A good smith would know the carbon content of the different iron chunks by feel look and weight and a true craftsman would make an optimal blade with a soft spine that would bend and a hard blade that would keep an edge.

Well first things first good job explaining that. Even I picked up what you threw down there. With all that kind of terminology im not going to say your wrong. I mean there wouldnt be names for it if it didnt exist. But I kind of get the feeling that was the exception. Im pretty sure most of the katanas were simply folded and heat treated with a select few being made using the method you described. Also iron cant be hardened. It can be case hardened but if the metal they used was hardened In any way it was most certainly a type of steel. At least that my understanding anyways but what the heck do I know.

ok well I'll give you guys this much.. more than I have on your past ones.. this is actually usable unlike the last 3 or 4. My only problem is.. this isn't actually a katana.. the blade wasn't folded for the proper flexible yet sturdy back, or with the fine sharp inserted blade edge.. this literally was a hunk of steel sharpened and shaped to look like a katana. Tony even did the folding and edge process.. this is just laziness.

Phoenix_Nexus yes the Sith are actually the creators of the dark saber and the light saber the Jedi made their own versions of the dark saber to have a chance so the Sith created the light saber to get ahead of the Jedi on cords no problem also nice to see another actual Star Wars geek

It could be either because they don't have the proper equipment to do that, or it's just too expensive/time consuming. Or, they're not skilled enough for that. It's a shame, but they would need to know ahead of time that they'll be making such blade to prepare stuff to do that.

The sword looks awesome; though I'm worried that the weight would be really heavy toward the handle since most of it is now metal. The Hamon could also have been made darker to really make it stand out. Isn't the original recipe for the hamon coloring just clay with ash or soot?

They usually make the handle with lighter metals like aluminum.

Yea, the handle might be a bit heavy compared to the blade, but since Lightsabers have all their mass in the handle (since the energy is most likely, well, energy) i think it's okay.

I could be wrong here but isn't the hardening line of a katana the result of the many folds the metal undergoes during the process of making the katana? And not some cheap visual effect they add in cause it "looks cool"? In fact, I'm pretty sure the clay technique was only used to make the pattern, known as jihada, more pronounced.

...No, The clay is used to keep the spine of the blade from getting as hot during treatment, so when quenched the spine retains a bit of softness while the blades edge remains hard for longer lasting sharpness. The spine needs to be soft for durability's sake. The only reason you would fold steel is to remove impurities, and seeing how we live in a modern era, you can buy steel that is pure and at that point, folding it would be redundant. And the two jackasses that replied to you saying you are correct have no clue what they are even talking about...Clearly.

Mitchel Hall actually you are wrong, I was asking the question sarcastically since I already looked it up to make sure. The design on a katana that they refer to in this video as being caused by the clay is actually the result of folding the metal, the clay doesn't cause the pattern, it only makes it more pronounced. If you read the 3 comments, we weren't talking about the technical aspects of it, we were only talking about the visual aspects. Also, while the metal we have today is more pure than in the past, it is only about as pure as metal folded 2-4 times. Japanese sword smiths would fold the metal up to 16 times. So no, it wouldn't be pointless.

A Temper line/Hamon has nothing to do with folding of steel, you are thinking of an acid etch, which would then show the patterns of the fold. And yes to fold pure steel to get a minute amount of slag out of it would be more than redundant.

my god will you stop using melons and bottles of drink for testing the weapon because melons can easily be sliced up very easily by a slightly sharp blade and bottles of liquid is not even dense enough to test it properly, use ballistic gel blocks for firearms you only need to buy it once and heat it up and let it solidify again to re use :/
