You are right that some people without real weapons experience say some really dumb things. Recently while I was holding my spear, my brother walked by and said a knife was a much better weapon. That he could just grab my spear and stab me easily. I tried to explain to him why he was wrong but he just said "whatever" and walked away.

Both your videos were interesting and entertaining but, ye Matt looked at the spears from older periods and ages before the Medieval European period and other cultures which is what you didn't take into account in this video but, either way both your arguments made sense in your contexts. Thank you for sharing.

Hey Shad, why are the wings of the spear aligned with the blade itself? Would it not make more sense if the wings were perpendicular to the blade? I feel like the wings being aligned like that would potentially allow the wings to slip into the wound if the wings weren’t long enough.
@cinder1980
@cinder1980 3 жыл бұрын
Having the wings perpendicular means that you could have even shorter wings and less weight on the spearhead and therefor more point control while still keeping the utility of the wings.

For the wings, I would like to remind everybody that mandalorians aren’t just great fighters but also great HUNTERS I think it would be detrimental in case you were fighting a creature and you were to stab it only to get your spear stop before hitting any vital organ And before someone asks “why not use a blaster?" heat resistant beasts and blaster-proof scales aren’t really that uncommon and you may also use a spear just to show off (which isn’t uncommon in the Mandalorian culture and is heavily encouraged instead) We also don’t know who was the spear for, if it was the one of a short person its size would be perfect

I see the point you’re going for, but Winged spears were also a go-to weapon for Boar hunting. The boar spear had a heavy broad blade and wings so the spear wouldn’t over-penetrate through the charging animal and allow the boar to attack the wielder by charging all the way up the shaft. I feel like this principle would apply in general for hunting UNLESS the spear was specifically for throwing.

remind me if im wrong but at one point we see a 'certain bounty hunter' stand next to mando and they are about the same height but this same bounty hunter choke out a storm trooper and lift him about a foot off the ground without raising him much above his own head. I would say the spear is a bit longer than shad gives it credit for because mando and the crew are fairly tall. Then again maybe its a bit of the armour, something to look into a bit.

I'm not sure the Mandolorian martial art Din uses to fight with the staff is supposed to be a spear style, I think it's more based on bojutsu but modified to have stabbing attacks with the small head. It's a metal bo with a small spearhead to add stabbing. Also, on the grounds of no hand protection, I'm pretty sure it's a Mandalorian weapon, so you'd be expected to be wearing the full armor, gauntlets included.

I dunno dude, I don’t recall a single Mando that ever had a beskar gauntlet. Arm guards, yes, but an actual gauntlet that protects the fingers, no. Most Mandos just use leather gloves on their hands, as to help protect them from the heat of their flamethrowers. The questionable guarding technique was just a small oversight in an otherwise awesome fight scene.

The actress for Morgan is Diana Lee Inosanto, she is the daughter of one of the most important martial artists in America, their main martial art is kali/silat/fma. The style of staff and the style of fighting reflect that. The spear name in these styles are called "sibat". We can also see the influence of the maori Taiaha. In both cases the spear point is a the second thought option. It is a filipino belief that training must be transferable to many weapons. So the main art is based on the staff. The stab are use as a killing blow.

In regards to the beskar spear being used primarily as a quarterstaff: it's short, it's thin, and it's made out of a material that is supposed to be really dense. What does that tell us? Two things: it's design is less oriented towards being a spear (and or they wanted to keep it in frame as much as possible) and that getting whacked in the jaw with it will probably break your jaw, because that's a lot of kinetic energy over a small area. So, why is it used more like a quarterstaff than a spear? Simple: it's most effective when used as a quarterstaff. Why is it a spear and not a quarterstaff? The mandalorins are a very practical people, and the one big weakness of a quarterstaff is that it doesn't have any pointy bits. So, if you add on a pointy bit, by forming one end into a small spearhead, then it becomes a lot more versatile. So, the beskar spear is less a short, thin, spear but a thin quarterstaff with a pointy end.

I go a bit Nerd here: Mandalorians are trained from childhood in the use of about every Weapon there is in the galaxy. We see how The Mandalorian fought with the Spear, so i guess that is the Melee way he has learned to fight. I asume that the Use of such weapons like the Spear for a mandalorian is rather using it like a quarterstaff (like Shad said) and bringing in the killing blow with the small Spearhead, which makes sense since the Mandalorians trust fully in their armor and are fighting like it. So in the end, the Spear is realy rather a quarterstaff with a spearhead then a traditional spear.

My main point against it having wings is that the Mandalore didn’t only fight humanoid targets, as seen in the show there several non humanoid creatures that wings on the spear would prevent the user to make a deep enough thrust to deal fatal damage. I would say that the fighting with the spear being more quarter staff like make a little sense. Mando has beskar gloves so his hands are protected, he fights very close up, and we don’t know what types of armor the enemies use. Could be that the unique qualities of beskar are best for this type of fighting especially against lightsabers where you need to be carful. (I haven’t see the fights with the spear in a while so idk) just saying thrusting against a force user could have some side effects that they’re trying to account for. Idk this a guess and I also don’t know about spear fighting so I may be talking nonsense.

I mean even if that's the case, it wouldn't have harmed the weapon's functionality to have put a proper cutting blade on it. However, i do disagree that fighting "up close" with a staff is ideal for a lightsaber. There's a reason qtr staff's grew to 9 feet long. The only real advantage a spear has over a sword is range. It doesn't matter how "careful" you need to be with a lightsaber the closer you are the easier it is to land a killing strike.

Lightsabers melt through what they cut. Beskar's melting point is just higher than what a lightsaber is capable of outputting at any one time. How come people have such trouble with this? There should be MANY materials that a lightsaber can't burn/melt through.

@@matthewmatthew981 but there aren't. Within hundreds of books, comics etc there are a handful. Sure a two foot thick column of duracrete will take time to cut through due to the mass but only a few identified materials/elemements in the star wars galaxy are known to be lightsaber resistant (not invulnerable but resistant) and that galaxy has had plenty of time for space and scientific exploration to discover potential materials; I believe cortisis isn't technically lightsaber resistant but it absorbs energy so well that it causes the lightsaber to shut off.

@@nathanthom8176 sorry, meant to say basically the same thing. There at least SHOULD be multiple situations where Lightsaber can't cut through "literally anything, anytime, anywhere, instantly thank you". They very clearly melt-cut through materials by giving a fixed output of thermal energy: they do not behave as though they are mono-molecular death-sticks (like Wonder Woman's sword or literally any ninja sword in anime). That's why I agree with your observation of the lightsaber heating up the beskar on contact, because logically we should expect for the metal to glow as the heat of the lightsaber makes it approach it melting point. Meanwhile, other kind of materials get melted because the heat of the blade makes them exceed their melting point. The only place that this logic is inconsistent is wherever light sabers are shown to cut through the hulls of spacecraft; I mean, shouldn't we expect that stuff to be able to withstand the light of all those STARS they're intending to fly by,, deflector shields or no? "Historical accuracy" only works in our world. What was the spear designed to be used against- other Mandalorians with gaps between armor? Non-Mandalorians wearing whatever they happen to wear? If Mandalorians, of course there won;t be cutting edges because the gaps in their armor aren't conducive to such strikes. On the other hand that general style of armor proved very popular- the spear would be useful against Clone troopers and Imperial Stormtroopers equally. But, full body armor seems pretty rare in the Star Wars universe, so a stabby stick does seem generally useful. Plus, we don't seem to see any evidence of tight;y- massed formations being a historical thing so you wouldn't' expect longer spear-like weapons like pikes. Are there any Earth history accounts of the wings getting caught in armor? That might explain why there are no wings on the Mandalorian spear- they could get stuck in armor.

I don't know of any historical account of spear wings getting caught in armor. In fact, one of the reasons they were made was to avoid over-penetration from the spear's thrust, so in any instance they would be more beneficial than not. Not to say the wings should be a "must" in a spear, though. In the scholagladiatoria channel there's a kind-of response to this one that explores more on this topic, if you're interested. It gives some other considerations that Shad missed and could be more accurate to what the Mandalorian's spear really is.

@@garethvila5108 Yep, for instance the crosspiece on boar spears are specifically there to stop overpenetration *and* to sort of "steer" the boar away from the wielder of the spear. Same function could be served by war spear "wings". I believe this has been a case even in the now non-canon Legends material. Beskar is lightsaber resistant, not lightsaber proof. You'll eventually melt your way through a suit of beskar armor if you hold your blade against it, but by the time you do, the Mandalorian wearing it has already shot you in the face for your trouble. It resists the lightsaber *enough*.
@anlumo1
@anlumo1 3 жыл бұрын
One interesting aspect is that since it's metal, it should be highly heat conductive. This means that the whole staff should have hundreds of degrees (Celsius) long before there's any chance of melting through it in a fight. Unless you wear welder's gloves, it's already useless at that point.
@noraye2500
@noraye2500 3 жыл бұрын
@@anlumo1 funny how beskar seems to be super heat resistant even though it was melted in a forge in order to make things. So i guess that forge was hotter than a lightsaber, which means that the materials the forge was made of was way more resistant than beskar melting, ect, ect and now you see the logical paradox of increasingly stronger materials that is apparently stronger than a lightsaber can burn, because that just makes so much sense

Well, this is a Mandalorian weapon, and, as so, they have far more effective ways to deal with big creatures than a spear, like guns and missiles. But, most of the Mandalorian equipment was specifically desing to duel a Jedi, and I would assume the this is the primary function of the spear, be able to stop a lightsaber. But, given that, most Jedi are from humanoid species, that are aren't that large.

I think it’s more of a javelin/quarterstaff than a proper spear. Plus I think it should be noted too that it was made by & for Mandalorians, and was probably designed with fighting against armored opponents in mind. If that’s the case it would make sense for it to be designed with a head more suited to piercing/slipping through armor plates. As for the length, pure Beskar is extremely rare and expensive so having s weapon made of it would undoubtedly be a weapon that never left the owner’s side, so a shorter and more manageable length would be appropriate for carrying. Finally we see it used for not just thrusts, but rather using the entire staff as both an offensive and defensive tool for a large number of circumstances. This is why I believe that this design is not only practical, but preferable fitting for the character both personally and culturally. I love it for it’s simplicity.

I'm wondering if there are any advantages at all to curving a hilt in either setting whereas my friends proclaims the curved hilts superiority over straight hilts in contest of dodge and thrust matches (with an omni-directional blade) which I compared to fencing, (but fencers don't use curved hilts either). Regardless when I finally catch up on the Mandalorian I'll watch this video and I love the work the you do. hope you and anyone that reads this has a great day!

Awesome analysis of the Beskar spear, mate ! It's always a pleasure to see you geek out on the popular weapons of the moment. As for the "wrong" usage of the spear in the fight, I have 2 bits of infos that I'd like to point out. 1/ Storywise, the usage of the spear in such a way is actually part of the story. Mando has specifically been asked by Cara Dune that Moff Gideon must be taken alive, because he's too important as an imperial information treasure trove. If you look closely, from the moment Mando draws his spear to face Gideon, to the moment he disarms him, 90% of the fight, he fights while holding the head of the spear ! Pretty unorthodox way to wield a spear ! Meaning all this time, even while facing a lethal foe who has the power to end him in one strike if he's not careful, he's trying everything he can to engage in non lethal attack, hence always fighting with the back of the spear. Which also means, no thrusting, since this move would be rendered useless in the absence of the spear's tip. During the whole fight, Mando was using his spear both as a fighting stick or a shield, depending on the situations, but never as a spear, until the very final blow, to block Gideon from moving and marking the end of the duel. Context. 2/ If anyone remembers a little indie show from the years back called Game of Thrones, Pedro Pascal had a meteoric appearance in the show as Oberyn Martell, the prince of Sunspear of Dorne, which, like the name of its city kinda implies, is from a people who fight with ... (drumrolls) spears. I remember that for the BTS about the shows at the time, Pedro went to great lengths to describe how for this role, he was training in Wushu, the chinese modern kungfu. Chinese kungfu have definitely a long history in martial arts, including the art of the spear, which , for for centuries in Chinese martial and societal traditions, has been called the King of Weapons, as it is considered one of the noblest and hardest to master weapons, given all its variations and versatility in attack and defense patterns, as well as in range. So it wouldn't be far fetched to say that Pedro did carry over all his training in Chinese kungfu into the fight we got to see in the Mandalorian, some of his moves being clearly wushu-inspired, such as when he kicks the spear behind him so it circles all around his shoulder to come back in the front above him and strike his opponent from above, being a pure chinese kungfu move (even though we know it was his stunt double who did the fight, but well, that could have been a cool story). Also, the way the tip was shaped heavily reminds me of chinese spears, (and I should know, since I'm of Taiwanese descent, have seen countless of chinese martials arts flicks, and has studied chinese martial arts for a few years), and let's not forget the fight between the magistrate and Ahsoka : She was fighting with it pure chinese kungfu style. Which is not surprising, since the actress who portrayed the magistrate is none other than Bruce Lee's God-daughter. So that's that. Hope it gave you some more insights on the why's and the hows of this spear. In my mind, one of the reasons why I'm so in love with the Mandalorian is that you can clearly feel the 2 creators of this show, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, are hell-bent into making not only a great piece of entertainment, but also have the decency to do their homework, and make decisions that take every details into consideration. And even if they might not have been aware of all the little details themselves, they had the good taste to surround themselves with countless people who knew how things should be done, and actually do it. The simple fact that they made what appears to be an almost perfect replica of a chinese spear (minus the tassel) in a multi-millions dollar sci-fi show with thousands of props, costumes, aliens make-up and CG shows, in the most famous and beloved (and pressured) film franchises of the entire galaxy, and that they got this detail so right, is mind-blowing to me. It just shows the dedication to details ! And when you see someone putting so much attention in details, you know you're in for a treat when you enjoy their stuff.
