"What new authority is he exercising? Do we see Clone Troopers on every street corner?" Funnily enough, the recent Lego Star Wars game did something like this. During and after playing through episode 3, the Coruscant free roam area you see clones and AT-STs stationed around the area where as during episode 2 when area unlocks there's none.

Clone wars also does something similar. After the almost jingoistic first season where the focus is on the battles and victories, it eventually becomes more about how Palpatine is accumulating power through the war. Pretty soon, everything is becoming more like a police state when Ahsoka wanders through Coruscant.

I think the biggest tragedy of the prequels was all the constant bullying that many people received from the supposed fans. Namely George Lucas himself, Hayden Christensen, Ahmed Best and of course most tragically Jake Lloyd. The bullying on Lloyd led to him quitting acting for good and in recent years has unfortunately been dealing with mental health problems, specifically being recently diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. In the case of Ahmed Best, he nearly committed suicide due to the amount of bullying and backlash to his performance as Jar Jar. Even recently with the backlash of TLJ, it shows that sadly this type of behavior is still around in the fandom. Bullying and sending death threats to Rian Johnson, Kathleen Kennedy and Kelly Marie-Tran. (Edit) Even recently again with the reactions to the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Specifically with the literal HUNDREDS of racist DMs sent to actress Moses Ingram, who plays the Third Sister Inquisitor Reva. It's downright disgusting that there are still people like this in a fandom I loved so passionately.

The saddest thing about that to me is… it’s over movies! Films. Pieces of entertainment. You’re allowed to dislike them, but as soon as you go and personally attack the people involved, that’s the moment that you’re no longer worth listening to, especially when you say stuff like “I was insulted” or “It’s a betrayal” It’s not even like the prequels are even that bad and to my knowledge no one was harmed during their making. If the Star Wars prequels are the worst films you’ve ever seen, you haven’t seen many movies. I’ve seen bad movies and it didn’t ruin my life or even ruin my day.

Personally, I have never really had a problem with how Padme dresses when she is Queen of Naboo as from my perspective its intentional as the makeup and elaborate clothes are likely to make it easier for the Queen's body doubles to pass themselves off as her. Personally I find it fits with Padme's ability to deceive her enemies.

Also, monarchs (and other important figures) _have_ dressed up in similar ways - including the face paint - in real life. It's not really done anymore, except in fiction, but it's absolutely a real thing. I've never understood peoples' issues with it. Even outside Amidala, Star Wars has always been as much fantasy as sci-fi, and has always been somewhat "goofy" if you want to look at it that way. I mean, the galaxy's premiere guardians, the Jedi _Knights..._ wear _robes._ Edit: Though, I'll agree her changing clothes every few scenes with no discernible time jump is weird. Maybe it was meant to be funny?
@WaryObserver
@WaryObserver 2 жыл бұрын
@@TristenSarelvun I think the main problem in this is that we see no one else in such way. I mean there are several planets with different cultures clearly, yet we only focus on one or two planets, or only Tatooine *rolls eyes*. But yeah, the thing i say is the issues is we not see much of such societies, which makes it even weirder. Take the Mos Eisly Cantina scene, so mane races shown in one scene, it shows how big all is, while Naboo, a whole Planet seems to be ONLY Humans or Gungans. The diversity is missing, which makes outfits like Amidala's stand out way too much this way.
@RaphBlade7
@RaphBlade7 2 жыл бұрын
@@TristenSarelvun Personally, I think her changing outfits might also go with the idea of her wearing several elaborate outfits being a way to make the Queen standout thus making it easy for her body doubles to take her place (as her constantly changing clothes would be the perfect opportunity for a switch) when Padme wants to go incognito like on Tatoonie. It also goes with Padme's tendancy to change outfits in the later films indicating it's just an aspect of her personality. One thing I noticed playing LEGO Star Wars is her daughter Leia similarly would change outfits in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the sequel trilogy (though her wardrobe changes tended to be more practical and were no where near as elaborate, while her changing into iconic Hulkslayer outfit after being captured by Jabba in Return of the Jedi being involuntary), though in A New Hope Leia wore her iconic Princess dress and hair buns throughout the film. Personally, I think it was because Lucas had the budget for fancy costumes and did it to make the Queen standout and to make the body double reveal more believable as the makeup and elaborate clothes allow Padme to blend in with her handmaidens while one of her body doubles acts as the Queen. Sure I get some people have a hard time accepting that someone would change clothes that often, but to me it makes perfect sense given Padme's use of body doubles!

I've never had a problem either for a rather different reason. Ceremonial garb just tends to look goofy. I've head of the deception idea and while it is a neat one I don't buy that the queen would suddenly start dressing like a clown one day just to enable that deception. Much more likely it's just ceremonial garb which is often silly looking, just look at the Swiss Guard, The Beefeaters, the freaking Pope. And the elaborate silly looking noble outfit makes the streamlined "action princess" outfit stand out more. Edit: Additionally it highlights just how restrictive and binding the actual official office can be.

I just realized there could've been an easy reason to include Jar-Jar on the adventure. Have the queen or someone mention they needed a civilian witness from the Gungans to appear in court to help them plead a case. BOOM a reason for Jar-Jar to be there. They could've had Obi-wan or Qui-gon make a snide comment about being stuck with Jar-Jar. With some adjusting, they could've made Jar-Jar work.

As a massive fan of the Phantom Menace, I feel like I should be defending it against a lot of what is being said against it but one thing I'll always defend is Amidala's outfits. In my opinion, it's to show that she is not only an elected official, she's a QUEEN. She's meant to look extravagant, almost like a peacock showing off its feathers. If you want a historical example, try Elizabeth I. To show power, you dress big. It could also show that, as the movies go on, her outfits become simpler, creating a mental timeline with the audience between these big costumes showing strength and security to Leia's simpler outfits where she's on the run, without the funds, showing how things have gone to hell but she still looks important, especially in her iconic first outfit. Like mother, like daughter, they're always going to stand out.
@Tareltonlives
@Tareltonlives 2 жыл бұрын
Well said! Naboo is a very formal, elaborate, quaint, old fashioned type of planet. Part of the reason for the costumes is to hide Padme's real identity so she can pull the double switch, but part of it is to show that no matter how young she is, she is part of her people, part of her culture. It's like long hair of native americans- it's part of identity, part of belonging. In Attack of the Clones it's more about how she's expressing herself when her job really prevents her from expressing anything. A pet theory of mine is that Lucas was inspired by Jackie Kennedy- put in a high position, made an aristocrat, her husband betrayed her, she had to put on a face for the public, etc. Helps that Natalie Portman also played her.

19:35 After seeing The Phantom Menace a good number of times, I found that there’s an actual reason for Jar Jar’s banishment given in the movie! But given the heavy load of jargon that Jar Jar spouts, there’s no way that most people could understand what he’s even saying! While the gang use the Bongo to travel to the city of Naboo, Jar Jar explains that he caused a little too many accidents in his home city, and the final straw came when he accidentally crashed Boss Nass’ yacht while trying to save it from a gas explosion! THAT’S THE ACTUAL EXPLANATION: “Mesa cause one, two-y little bitty axadentes, huh? Yud say boom de gasser, den crashin der bosses heyblibber, den banished!”

After he woke up he killed them in a psychotic break and crashed their ship on a junk yard world. You know LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga actually has a bit where Jar Jar points out he feels that Obi-Wan dislikes him to Qui-Gon. I like to think that they could've played into Jar-Jar possibly having insecurities of being ignored or disliked, hence why he acts so silly intentionally or not, like that one kid from the 2017 IT (can't remember his name). That way, his off-beat antics are justified and he's relatable. Though I still like my idea of him being a Crouching Moron Hidden Badass archetype that was exiled for a different reason and he shows it off in his tactility, much like what Linkara suggested.

I think my biggest problem with the thing of you wanting Anakin to be Darth Vader earlier in the timeline is that Vader was once a good man. In A New Hope we see Obi-Wan say Anakin was “a good friend” and a lot of Return of the Jedi is Luke trying to redeem Vader and in the end, Vader does help save Luke and redeem himself. I think having all we see of him just being him as either a petulant brat in Attack of the Clones and then moving to being someone who’s fully serving the Emperor doesn’t work for me. I liked the transition we actually got. It’s just the execution that led to it doesn’t work for me as well as really bad lines.

3:34:18 Since both the EU _and_ Disney did "Palpatine inhabiting new bodies" (and this does post-date the EU doing it), perhaps the "way to cheat death" thing that Plageus had was "take this guy's soul and put it in that guy's body" and Palpatine's Plan A was actually to body-jack The Chosen One, figuring that would forcibly make him The Chosen One. Like, we only see Palpatine using recreations of his own body (again, in both universes), but a clone of The Chosen One would not be The Chosen One and would not have the same magical relevance to everything, so he might as well just stick to his own badass self if he's not getting the boon of supplanting The Chosen One. Then, with Palpatine in the body of The Chosen One, he controls the prophecy and fate, making him even more powerful than before. Thus, he wants Anakin to peak above him, then steal Anakin's body. And you could say that Anakin failed to become more powerful than him _because_ of being a cyborg. He lost the potential due to it all.

I plan on saying this if I can ever muster up the will to make a video again, but I feel one of the problems with TPM and AOTC is Dooku himself. He comes right the hell out of nowhere and was never mentioned before then. How does Padmé know him? When did they meet? Why would she assume he was trying to have her assassinated? Dooku really should have been a character in Phantom Menace. Have him meet Qui-Gon when they arrive at Coruscant or the Jedi temple and show him and Obi-Wan being respectful to him. Qui-Gon then introduces him to Anakin as his old master. This establishes some kind of emotional bond between Anakin and Dooku. He sees Qui-Gon as the father he never had and could look up to Dooku as a grandfather-like figure. Being an innocent child, he trusts him completely, and Dooku tries to teach Anakin a bit. Then, in between movies, Dooku helped Obi-Wan with Anakin when he needed it. This would help explain why Anakin was so angry and wanted to take on Dooku in the lame-ass duel in AOTC. He looked up to Dooku when he was growing up and now to see someone who felt like family to him betraying everything he taught him, it enrages him and he feels it's an insult to Qui-Gon's memory. Hence why he charges at him. Back to TPM, after introducing Dooku, then, have Dooku trying to help Padmé, but she can tell something is off about him. She doesn't trust him. He says things she doesn't agree with on a moral level, which sows seeds of hatred between them. That plus ten years of distrust between them, with his attitude and behavior only getting worse, could explain why she would think it was him.

Then Palpatine would "surrender" the Republic. Meanwhile, Dooku's plan was to then reveal Palpatine as the Sith Lord, kill _him_ and go "Alright, Jedi Order, I spent literally my entire life warning you about this guy, you didn't believe me, he killed my goddamn Padawan, I went deep under cover, got him exposed, killed him, and saved the Republic. 4:59 Qui-Gon's "arrogance" and "reckless" isn't call out or treat like a flaw bc it actually isn't. What makes Qui-Gon such a great jedi master is the fact that he belives in the force, in his own insticts. His arguments with the Jedi Concil aren't that different from Luke refusing to follow Obi Wan and Yoda when they told that he would have to fight and kill Vader, choosing to still try to save his father instead of obeying his masters.

Ep 1 could have been a building block on to how Anakin developed some of his narcissism and arrogance. And your suggestion of after he blows up the droid ship, a scene of someone heaping praise on him and him just lapping it up would’ve been a nice nod to that. Kinda of like how in GOW after Atreus learns that he is part god, his arrogance increases tremendously.

I still feel that the prequels should be retold, maybe in comic form. Take their respective plots & redo them with script rewrites, some altered plot directions (like some of the ones that Linkara brought up in these reviews), and (for a comic) brand new artwork that doesn't have to replicate shots from the movies, but instead can work in tandem in ways that they should. Like Linkara says, there are really good stories deep within each of the prequels, which is why I personally can't hate on this trilogy, and I'd love to see that potential finally be realized.

Honestly, the closest we have to that exact vision is the novelizations. They genuinely do the best they possibly could to justify and explain the awkward and odd decisions made, and provide some much needed insight into the characters' minds. It still keeps the same plot events and dialogue (for the most part) but it helps a lot in understanding the "why" behind it all.

(AOTC): What's that story about Christopher Lee? He was talking to Peter Jackson about Saruman getting stabbed during the Scouring of the Shire, and disagreed with him over what sound a man makes when getting stabbed in the back. Lee knew from personal experience. I would also say that the contradiction between the prequels and Yoda's words in ESB is the point. Those things Yoda tells Luke? Those are the lessons Yoda learned the hard way in the Clone Wars and their aftermath. (Rogue One): I'll say this again. The hallway scene is not just about how awesome it is to see Vader cut loose on rebels. It's primarily about how screwed those guys are. Even with Rogue One dead, the fight goes on, and sacrifices must still be made.

I don't know if this is considered canon, especially with the Disney purge of Star Wars lore, but there is a comic in Star Wars Tales where it's explained that the previous ruler of Naboo had been impeached, and Amidala was implemented as Queen basically just to stop a power vacuum and elevate the social status of her family. Also, right before her ascension, she was dating a boy who looked incredibly similar to what teenage Anakin Skywalker would later look like, whom she had to break up with because of her new responsibilities, and she never saw again. ...Giving the impression that their relationship and later marriage was at least partially out of guilt...

Medicholrians are a mistake. If they were meant to provide a scientific explanation for the Force, they fail, but I don't think they were meant to. I think they were meant to provide an easy way to show how super-special Anikan is, and no one thought how they don't work with what is known about the Force and the Jedi. Also, as Linkara points out, making Anikan super-strong from the word "Go" was a mistake for a bunch of reasons. The pod-race scene? Yeah, I agree with Linkara. It's fun as a stand-alone short movie (watch it alone, and it does have a satisfying beginning, middle, and end and is imaginative and well-made and stuff), but in the film itself it's just too long. I feel like it would have been better being released as a short film, maybe something to build hype for the movie itself, similar to the Clone Wars shorts that lead up to Revenge of the Sith.
@mikegates8993
@mikegates8993 2 жыл бұрын
To play devil's advocate, I think the point of Medicholrians was to show the Jedi weren't behaving like they should. Using science to determine something spiritual and all that rather than letting the Force bring people to them. It still fails in execution like a lot of the stuff involving the Jedi in the prequels. Or it was a lazy way to set up Anakin and people who try to examine the failure of the Jedi are putting more thought than Lucas did.
@jamesadamsfl
@jamesadamsfl 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikegates8993 Sadly, I think it was the latter, especially as the movies never seem to acknowledge how messed up the Jedi were. Heck, unlike in the Legacy timeline, Luke recreates them apparently exactly as they were. What does that tell you?
@carloszapata847
@carloszapata847 2 жыл бұрын
I believe deep down, the real reason why reason people hate the Medicholrians (witch are sort of based in the Mitocondria) is a different one. People SAY it is because it makes scientific what is supposed to be spiritual, but I think that what they believe is something else entirely and Linkara is one of the very few who openly admit it: The Medicholrians establish that power over the force is hereditary. Judging from what I have seen, the Force flows trough every living being, but power over it exists on a spectrum, and those who are on an extreme (for example, The Chosen One) tend to have children on said extreme. This more or less goes against the fantasy of being a Jedi many of us probably had. This fantasy is also probably why Force Unleashed (where the Sith turned Jedi Starkiller is capable of going toe to toe with both the Chosen One and the Emperor) was so popular and why there were so many, like Linkara, who liked the "Rey is a nobody" explanation. This also ignores the famous line "The Force is strong in my Family".
@jamesadamsfl
@jamesadamsfl 2 жыл бұрын
@@carloszapata847 I honestly never thought of that until Linkara pointed it out, and we kind of did have the idea of Force strength being hereditary before. As you said, it was established in the movies that the Skywalker family (at least from Anikan onwards) are all strong in the Force, and it shows up again in Legacy, Expanded Universe stuff. I honestly hated it originally because it felt too science-y, and now I REALLY hate it because it's lazy writing. SHOW us Anakin is strong in the Force; DON'T TELL!

I find it ironic Linkara would reference the OVER 9000 meme, as it reminds me that the creator of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama is a Star Wars fan and the Saiyan S-Cell concept he created has often been compared to the Midicolrians (unjustly in my opinion as the Super Saiyan form has always been a biological transformation, thus the S-Cells make perfect sense and actually prove that Vegeta was wrong that a Saiyan needed to be ruthless to achieve the form as the more Gentle-hearted a Saiyan is the more S-Cells they accumulate from growing stronger, thus Goku's gentle heart and compassion for others allowed him to achieve it due to the rage over Krillin's death and it also explains why it took a millennia for one to appear after Yamoshi, the original Super Saiyan as the Saiyans lived in a culture that valued ruthlessness)!

Lightsabers are incredibly dangerous. You're holding a PLASMA BLADE. If you drop the lightsaber, congratulations you either just lopped off one your bits, or the sword is now melting through several layers of flooring and metal plating because it's plasma. So it's why only Jedi are allowed to use them. They have the training to use them. Not just the martial training to not drop them, but they have training in the Force to be able to use them as swords without risking chopping their own limbs off. It's why Padawans are given training sabers and must train their Force Awareness to the point of it being second nature before they're given a proper Lightsaber. It's this awareness that allows them to perform the stunts that we see without body parts flying everywhere. It's why lightsaber duels are so athletic and acrobatic. They aren't just duels of martial prowess, but duels using the Force as well. It's why a duel between two Masters is equal parts swordfight and elaborate dance.

57:21 Funny enough if Lucas had continued heading Star Wars those are exactly the questions he would have answered. Midichlorians are tied to The Whills which is what Lucas was really, REALLY wanting to explore more. I have a personal theory that it was the connection to The Whills that Lucas was referring to when he was saying that Jar-Jar was more important that people were thinking. Then when both midicholrians and Jar-Jar bombed he was forced to drop it. Lucas did say that his idea for the sequel trilogy would be literally going into the world of the midichlorians, think Inside Out for Star Wars. I don't think this would've been a good idea but I can't deny it would have been interesting as all hell.

I have to jump in and I'm sorry I didn't do this months ago, but there is a precedent for electing kings or queens in the real world, it was just for life, not for terms. Back in the high middle ages and continuing on through the renaissance, the age of reformation and the age of enlightenment (around the 13th to the early 19th centuries), the Holy Roman Empire and then later the Dutch Republic and the Kingdom of Poland Lithuania would elect monarchs (or stewards in the Republic's case) that would serve for life. While the Austrian Hapsburgs and the Princes of Orange would hold it mostly hereditarily until the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire into the Confederation of the Rhine and later the German Confederation and the Dutch Republic was made into the Batavian Republic by France during the Napoleonic Wars, the Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania would keep electing separate monarchs until it was partitioned by Austria, Russia and Prussia in 1794. In fact one of their kings, Henry of Valois, would resign as king of Poland-Lithuania to succeed his brother as king of France.

Ngl, I have no problem with Yoda's fighting. For one, the entire point is that Yoda's a failure and the heart of the collapse of the Jedi. The Yoda we see in the OT is the Yoda who has learned this lesson. The Yoda we see here is an arrogant fool. Yoda hates himself in the OT. That's the point, he's realized what a colossal failure he was. So I don't think it breaks character, I think it shows who he was before the character development that makes him into the OT Yoda. The "go into exile" is the culmination of that. This is where the self-loathing kicks in. He goes into exile instead of going back or organizing resistance because now he's come to the conclusion we see in the OT. As for the actual mechanics of how he fights, I always presumed that he's using the Force. Like, Yoda's _so_ powerful he doesn't give any tell that he's using the Force, he just does it. He's not jumping, he's yeeting himself around with the Force. That's not his muscles doing it, it's his mind. And that's fine by me since... how else is the little goblin supposed to fight? Yoda _never_ has the high ground. He's itty bitty. Fun sized. The only logical way for Yoda to fight is like this, because it's compensating for him being a tiny little guy.

I think the biggest disappointment with Solo is that we nearly got an official Star Wars comedy directed by Lord and Miller... but then Ron Howard took over and reshot everything from scratch. Frankly, I'm _still_ waiting for #ReleaseTheLordAndMillerCut to start trending; it'd almost certainly be more interesting than the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad.

Again I agree that the Shimi getting married yet never trying to inform Anakin of her situation is bad, though this is why I suggested the idea of Padme convincing the people of Naboo in raising money to free Anakin's mother from slavery to thank him for his heroism (as he didn't join the Jedi Order until after the Battle of Naboo) with Padme giving Shimi a job in her court, then have her retire to marry Owen Lars' father whom she knew from her time living on Tatoonie (heck you could say that Owen's dad was working to make enough money to buy her so he could free her). Heck, having her have a history of working for Padme could help explain why Padme decides to tag along as she and Shimi got along thus she's just as worried about her as Anakin is. You could still have Anakin not know any of this cause Shimi didn't want to distract him from his Jedi training. That way you could still have her be killed by Tusken Raiders and Anakin feeling guilty for not trying to free her himself and a possible source of anger toward the Jedi Order which did nothing to free his mother from enslavement. Personally I would have had her have some faint connection to the Force due to being Anakin's mother (as I think it is BS that Shimi wasn't at least mildly force sensitive herself, as apparently everyone has some slight connection to the force, though unless average person trains to hone it, said connection fades over time unless your especially strong with the force), not enough to become a Jedi herself, but enough to sense Anakin's destiny and not wanting to distract him from that.

So here's a fun fact about Sideous' fight with Mace. It was originally meant to be that a stand in would do most of Sideous' fighting, and that it would have been more of a direct duel...but Lucas decided "NO! Ian Mcdurmid must do this action scene even though he knows next to nothing about swordplay. Leading partly into the ridiculous spinning and how suddenly the other Jedi died.

3:18:33 actually, yes, I already knew Palpatine was going to be the emperor since movie one. It need be someone that rose to power among the Republic, and even though his face isn’t revealed, Palpatine matched the look of the Emperor. Also, the ending music from Episode 1 is the music of the Emperor from Episode 6, so when I finished, that when it clicked.

i think as a character clone Wars really did a lot of Work at giving us both the genuinely Heroic Anakin and the tempted by power Anakin and kind of earns back all the things Kenobi said in a new hope. honestly the last Arc of Clone wars is what a GOOD version of a prequel movie looks like

3:34:19 But at the same time..... Dude literally managed to survive Force Lightning, even for only a few seconds. Luke got basically one-shot by the Emperor's Lightning, yet Vader just said "Time to finally put that damn power to use..." And withstood it, even if he did eventually die from his injuries and exhaustion. I don't know, I'd say that's ***Plenty powerful***

16:33 Mr Lovehaug are you at all familiar with the traditional formal garbs of most monarchs throughout human history. Padme's outfit honestly wouldn't look out of place amongst them. Just look at some of the dresses worn by Elizabeth I back in Tudor times. She had the white face make up and everything. Monarchs dress up all fancy to help justify why they hold all the power in their societies. If they looked just like everyone else, everyone else might find it easier to question why it was the monarch with most of the wealth and political power.

Anyone else want an animated remake of the prequels? The story is fine, it's just the execution that needs improvement.

I confess. When I first saw Star Wars Episode III in theatres as a kid, I was surprised by the revelation that Palpatine was Darth Sidious. Maybe it was just because I was younger back then.

By the way you're ignoring the best line of Obi that makes Qui-Gon actually right on the first one in the beginning when they were leaving from the battle droid he responds the negotiations were short and pumping the room full of gas and trying to kill them is very cowardly so technically he was right used to only lose one point on the wrong counter.

Best scene in the entire prequel trilogy is when Palpatine officially reveals himself to Anakin. Bittersweetit is only five minutes😅
