Wave 2 of the Star Wars Retro collection has just arrived here at Toy Polloi so it's time for my review and take on these new/old figures from Hasbro. The new wave includes Boba Fett, Bespin Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Leia Hoth outfit, Han Solo Hoth Outfit and Lando.
Three of which will fly off the shelves, the others are destined to be peg warmers.

Same here! I can remember buying my first 2 figures with my own money (I was 7-8 when the first figures released). I bought 3p0 and Vader. I was hooked from that day on.

I’ve also picked up both waves now. There are absolutely issues with them, but as a complete set of 14 (including the two board game figures) they do look amazing all hanging up on the wall. As a serial opener, I decided to keep these on card (I’ve got most of he originals). Yes, they’re not great - but they are reasonably priced and most importantly accessible. (Oh, and they royally annoy the anti-repro crowd, so I like that too 😁)

You should check out the figures from Stan Solo, he has done both of those. 3po with the silver leg looks great.

I've watched a few less than complete reviews of these. Many were they don't even open them. To me, that's not a review. That's something I can do in a shop. Always got to open a toy to review it properly.

Hey Dave Interesting review. I only ever had one original figure when I was young, a Storm Trooper, I put a small black mark on one of his feet. Took it to a "friend's" place and forgot it, the next time I went back all of his figures had the same black mark... Just one of the many reasons he is an ex friend...haha😉

That lighter skin, orange eye Yoda is based on a variant of the original figure, so they didn't get it wrong but chose which version to go with. My vintage is the light skinned version. I believe the light skin is the one that came with the orange snake as well; that's what I'm seeing online at least.

Yeah, I had both Yodas as a kid. Didn't even understand the concept of variants at the time, just knew that one Yoga looked stoned or crazy or both.

I know I'm a bit late, and I hope I'm not telling you something you've figured out already, but the reason for your vintage Kenner Yoda figure being darker is because it is a later issued variant, where as the variant Hasbro chose to release is the very first edition. The color of Yoda got darker as the years went by, ending up in a dark mint color like the one you have. It also looks as if you've got the "Pac-Man" eyes variant. I think the "Pac-Man" eyes give Yoda that charm. It sure beats the red/orange eyes. :) Even if I'm not planning on collecting the retro collection, I still try to catch some of the reviews on these figures. Thanks for the review. :)

I only got my Boba Fett figure when he was a mail away in a Marvel Comic. I had to send a Postal Order for the figure. They hadn't released him on a card then. I had to do the same with another bounty hunter figure as well. Dengar.

Han Solo Hoth was my first figure, I can still remember playing with it in my Grandmother's house. Good memories. I sent away for Boba Fett in some deal where you had to send in the barcodes from the cards.

I couldn't agree more with the assessment of this wave. I was in 2 different Walmart stores today and the only Retro figures still on shelves were Lando, Hoth Leia, and Hoth Han. Not even the scalpers are picking these up yet. Here's an idea that would guarantee Hasbro big sales; a retro prototype armor Boba Fett figure. As the impossibility of finding the standard Retro Boba Fett figure on retail shelves demonstrates, when companies make products that consumers actually want, they do sell well. Running variant: My Yoda is 'holding' his cane - yours is separate in the blister. Mine also has a smaller 'T' style bubble with Yoda at the top. I never liked Hoth Han. Only found out later the 'holster' works! Bespin Han was a great figure.

The yoda figure is actually spot on , I’ve got the original orange snake yoda and the colour of yoda is actually the same as the first release .

I would be worried that Hasbro would not make the retro collection c3po & r2d2 with the correct chrome effect and instead opted for dull gold and silver paints.

It clearly can be done. Check out Stan Solos droids and astromechs. I have videos on those and they look amazing. But you could be right, Hasbro will go down a cheaper route. Or my guess, just won't make them.

@@toypolloi definitely can be done, stan solo did a fantastic job. I just know that Hasbro seems to have taken a stand against vacuchrome and only ever uses matalic paints, even in their black searies line of figures.

The Retro Real Ghostbusters figures have a lot of the same issues as the Star Wars ones. Not overly surprising, I'm sure, but thought it worth mentioning. The odd thing is that the RGB figures seem like they're partly scanned and partly new sculpts. The heads are similar, but not 100% the same (different hairlines, facial features, etc), while the bodies are seemingly scanned with newly sculpted details (some bits are soft, like they're scanned, while other bits are different sculpts from the vintage figures). The soft plastic is a thing on those figures, too, where the arms and legs are quite flexible. Some of them can't hold the neutrona wands properly, either. Winston and Ray's just flop about, while Peter's snaps into place, and Egon's fits snugly. Then there's Stay Puft who's quite different in certain ways (slimmer, for starters). Slimer's nearly a perfect recreation, though. It's an odd mixed bag, similar to how these are. I just hope the plastics hold up better over time. Most of my vintage RGB figures are suffering from plastic degradation. Forced me to buy an extra set to replace them, since I want decent display figures.

Judging by other modern Hasbro figures I can see this plastic degrading far quicker. The white plastic they use now yellows in a year. So I wouldn't expect much from these.

Very well reviewed as always , what I’ve taken from the reviews of both waves is that they’re a nice bit of fun, I think a lot of us grown ups would maybe buy them for kids to reminisce or to play with instead of certain vintage figures, but if I’m honest I’m almost relieved they’ve not been available in shops near me to tempt me to part with the money. My first thought when you bent Leias arm was of the bendems figures sold in the 90’s 😂

Hasbro could of added a small catalog or checklist with pictures with the paper they included. If they did this, they could make new collectors and kids excited for the line. Regarding the piece of paper included, I think that is the exact same document they included with a recent Spider-man toy line. It looks similar to the one I got with my RIP N' GO Spider-ham quad cycle.

Hi Dave, great review. Good luck to all that want to collect these figures, each to their own. Personally, I fail to see the the point in them. I realise that it may be a trip down memory lane for some people, but in that case why not just buy older ones on the net, clean them up if needed and if you really want to have them carded, put them on cards yourself. You yourself reviewed how to do this. its not that expensive to do and you can cherry pick your favourites and not have to except the choice put on the shelves by somebody at head office. That said, again its my personal view, So please people, no need to shoot me down with spiteful comments. Further more, I am not anti repro, so don't even go there. Keep up the good work, kind regards Mark.

Track down the Toys R Us version from 2010. That was a vintage figure with the rocket firing mech added to it.

The scan on the figures they must of used some beaters laying around that has lost a bit of detail. I was surprised by Leia's marshmallow arms LOL. Totally agree with you we need C3PO and R2D2 in the line up. Great video my friend!

I actually didn't mind the "faux-aging." It added a nice touch of nostalgia to it. Of course, this coming from someone who appreciates old, vintage items. To each his own, I guess. Have a good day!

First of all I love the show, it brings back so many happy memories of my childhood, I'm 54 years old so I remember seeing all the movies in the theater as a child, One action figure I wanted as a child , was a wedge Antilles pilot to fly alongside with Luke with the adventures I created in my head unfortunately I don't think they ever made a wedge Antilles figure and I never understood this even as an adult I've looked back and thought all they would have had to done is just making new head sculpt you already had the body in the flight suit maybe you can shed some light on this was there ever a wedge Antilles figure made ? I notice, they removed the Luke and Leia pose in the top right corner, and just left the choking warning. I saw in an earlier video, the figure was made in China, but the box reads imported from Vietnam.

Good point on the warning labels, Dave! I understand the need for hasbro to put these on the product somewhere, as there is a legal requirement to do so for them to protect the company if a child does injure themselves with their product. But why in SO MANY PLACES!!!!!? On the Front and Back of the card AND in a fold out leaflet! REALLY!!!? It's not a cannister of Plutonium!!!!! Or even a bottle of bleach? And it's interesting to note that other Hasbro products such as the Retro Real Ghostbusters line have far fewer warnings. I wish someone would ask Hasbro why they have to put these ridiculous number of warnings all over Star Wars figure packaging for their next live stream event!

Would love to see Hasbro extend this collection to unreleased figures in vintage style such as Rebel Fleet trooper, Mon Mothma etc. Totally agree that Tarkin & Snowspeeder Luke should be sold individually without the game. Collecting vintage star wars figures is a bit like gold-fever and having almost completed my vintage (78 - 85) collection it would be nice to know that I continue that feeling with hunting down new additions. Stan Solo and Smith Lord are doing a great job in filling this void (I have the Blue Snaggletooth & Yakface) but my budget limits buying more.

I like the Boba Fett but the head is a bit strange because it seems to sit a bit more to one side and not flat on the neck like the original. I agree the face paint app on Leia and Han is lame. Luke is pretty good. I prefer the original Luke's eyes but there were a few variations of that with Kenner and some of those were horrid (ever seen the vintage Luke with the heavy raised eyebrows? eeeehhh!!!). Lando is good. Yoda is my favorite. It is very close to the originals I have. I happen to prefer the lighter skin Yoda and Orange snake because that was what I got when they were first released when I was a kid. I have an original on card and the retro one is close in color. Too bad this release did not feature the Bespin Han instead of the Hoth version. Also, Where are R2-D2 and C-3PO???

I managed to find this wave for $5 US each on clearance at Walmart! I don’t mind the aging on the front so much, as it clearly distinguishes theses from originals even at a quick glance. I do think the backs are terrible, though.

I don't quite understand why they don't just release a ton of these, right across the board. It's always little dribs and drabs every couple years. They sell out and then a year on they've tripled in price.

Fun video! Thank you! As I've got modern versions of all these characters so far, I don't feel the urge to collect these, as nifty an idea as they are. (And especially since you mentioned that the limbs are getting rubbery.) Having said that, if they get around to EV-9D9 and Amanaman in either 2023 or 2025, I'm having them, definitely. Wouldn't be surprised if the new finish to the weapons is down to Hasbro either 1) cheapening the type of plastic used, 2) responding to Vintage collectors complaining that exact reproductions of the weapons would "hurt their investments and ruin the hobby," or 3) a combination of 1 & 2.

I actually like these figures very much! Like you mentioned wave 2 is superior to wave 1 in design and application. I would like to not only see a ROTJ mix but also a POTF wave and I can dream even some figures from the Ewok movies! 😁👍

I agree with your assessment. I have been to Walmart every other day to find Boba Fett. I see the amount of the other figs on pegs, but never Boba Fett. I hate Wal-Mart. Hasbro should have done a Bespin Wave (incl Yoda), or a Hoth Wave. This mixture just aggravates people. Han in Hoth was done because of all of the drama surrounding his "blue" coat, lol. Leia Hoth was done as a counterpart to Han. Boba Fett...nuff said Luke in Bespin Fatigues is another fan favorite that never gets love. Yoda goes with Luke. Lando...political move. Does not fit in play pattern with any other figures. Thanks for the review! Yoda

Bespin Luke is my favorite, I guess those little differences they made was to tell them apart from the originals 🤔 I mean I’ve seen people sell like vintage for $100 and worst people actually buying them 🤨

I have the recarded hoth han so I won't bother with that one I don't have the original yoda. I might get him loose from tunghori later the custom card makers can do a better job of these retro line did the same with tarkin buy the board game to have the figure I had the board game a long time ago second hand liked playing it for a time back then

Yeah, I used Tunghori for Tarkin and Princess Leia loose from the 1st wave. Both were in great condition and well packed - sadly no sign of anywave 2 on Tunghori yet. I'm quite happy to have them loose as I will recard them myself if/when I decide to.

Toy Poloi I have some questions for you. What would be the best way to strip, prime, and repaint vintage 1977 C-3PO and make them into K-3PO, R-3PO, and U-3PO? The finish on the C-3PO is not mint condition so that is why I am looking to make the other 3PO droids.

These figures are OK, but the recently released Stan Solo figures strike me as being far superior. Which is highly surprising when you consider the size of Hasbro, in comparison to Stan Solo.

I'd like to know, too. I'm still waiting on Zavvi to fulfill my order placed in February for Retro Yoda and Boba Fett. They delayed the original delivery dates from June 30th to August 30th. Never used them before and probably won't again - I should have gone to Forbidden Planet for single figures.

One prominent thing I noticed about this wave is they are made in Vietnam instead of China. I wonder if it's because of increased tariffs on Chinese made products and Hasbro tries to be as cheap as possible?

I think they've been moving production of some of their lines to Vietnam. Transformers have been coming out of there for the past few years iirc.

Without the droids, Hasbro's Retro line just seems to be 100% non-interesting to me. They seem to be avoiding R2 and C3PO which are figures that would cost more to make due to their plastic process and paint applications. My feelings are this: If you're not going to bother with giving us all the main characters, then DON'T BOTHER AT ALL. The faux aged packaging really is quite awful. The card back is absolutely dull and cheap. These figures might be worth getting if they were $2 each, because that's where you're going to find these figures in the future: in the cheap bins. Bobba Fett and Yoda might sell okay, but the rest are all but worthless to collect. Particularly weird rubbery arms and legs on these. Hasbro continues to produce shabby, poor quality figures that aren't worth the price. So many action figure companies are giving fans far better product. These might be better than wave one, but I'm going to pass on all of these figures. I already have all of the original figures, which are far, far superior in quality. With the low quality offered on these, I don't really know why they're even bothering? Nothing extra. Nothing improved. Just inferior versions of the originals. Even the new figure, the Luke Speeder Pilot isn't particular good in my opinion, since it's only a mere revamp of the Luke X-Wing pilot, and you have to buy a lousy game to get that! Just wretched business practice, right there. While these do show some minor improvement (like figures being able to hold their guns), Hasbro continues to fumble forward on the Star Wars merchandise in my opinion, and none of these are worth the money.

Do you really have toyshops in the uk that sell Them on pegs? Rocket firing Boba Fett’s for around 5£?😱 In Sweden there’s no toyshops that actually carry any Hasbro products other than a couple small Transformers or, if you’re lucky, Black Series Poe Dameron & Finn. I rarely seek out new stuff if something cool is released because it’s just way too expensive since distribution to Scandinavia is so very bad. And it’s frustrating that there’s so much resellers out there buying up stock and selling on E-Bay at crazy prices. There are some good shops in the UK that I buy from sometimes but many times items are sold out before I get a chance to buy them. Of course, preorders is a good option but I miss being able to walk into a shop and look at items closely before I buy. Just realized that my complaining makes me look old & grumpy. Hasbro are a business who will have noticed that lots of their SW products are on reduced shelves and take years to sell. I'd be interested in knowing the actual amount of these Hasbro have produced. Likely to the point where they'd expect them to sell out fully world wide. I suspect if they thought there was a mass world wide market for expanded ranges they'd close down Stan Solo and Fans Strike Back in an instant.

Hasbro made molds of the original figures instead of using the original mold. So it's a mold of a mold and that's why its losing some of the finer details.
