@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 TLJ had great effects and action sequences (for the most part, although the fight choreography was lacking at times) and I can understand what they were trying to do with Finn's storyline and his side trip with Rose, but the plot itself was lacking. The character development was hamfisted. The tone was inconsistent. The pacing was a mess. The overall plot of the trilogy barely advanced. Finn's entire character arc was treated like a joke until the very end of the movie. Rose was a poorly-written stereotype with no depth despite being a major character. Luke's character arc was shaky, but not absolutely terrible, but his abrupt death was an unsatisfying conclusion to that arc, as well as a terrible send-off for one of the main characters of the whole franchise.

Consider what compels the fans of a 40 year old story and why they became geeks for life in the first place. One of the several things I like about this piece is the respect and homage to the original story, that they added to it not trampled on it. That is how it should have been respected in the first place and where Disney Lucasfilm fell down.
@paulmichaelfreedman83345 жыл бұрын
The original props were made of transparent plastic with lights in and were very fragile. They weren't allowed to touch. Hence the fake moves in the original scene. In ESB they used alumini(u)m rods and very more durable and allowed for slighty more aggressive strikes unless they bent the rods. Since the prequels they used glassfibre sabers that were digitally removed afterwards so any bending or warping during strikes didn't matter, hence the fierce fights in the Prequels.

"Impressive, ...MOST IMPRESSIVE!" Almost seamless editing, outstanding computer graphics, and dynamically fluid action. Somebody, call Disney and have them re-shoot this fight scene, paying and using these guys "reimagining" as a paradigm. Then re-re-release the movie again, using the new fight scene, on DVD and/or stream. They'll make 10-20X the money their investment. We've been waiting for this kind of Episode IV fight scene for over forty years.
@deborahlepage17894 жыл бұрын
My mind has tucked this into canon. Lucas probably would have used it lol. And considering his penchant for continuing to tinker, it may yet happen. It's amazing to see Vader at his chilling Sith Lord best. I LOVE this scene and since George Lucas likes to tinker, I hope - HOPE that Lucas sees how very much people love his...what...Eastern/Western story of right, wrong and when courage can help people becomes the people they want to be. It might be a "kids' story" because it's the story you tell over the camp fire to remind people of the dangers faced and that people don't enter their journeys with perfect honor, perfect knowledge or wisdom and definitely not with perfect powerful skills. The steps of the journey have to show the failures and lessons to show the triumphs EARNED. I understand wanting to add in some things to appeal to kids humor, like the desert creatures, one eating another and belching, the world is dangerous, something just died. Leaving the "creatures" and the "droids" as the points of humor for the kids and the audience to laugh a little, but keep all the drama, the questionable moments I guess, because Han shot first, an as a original theater presentation maybe 6 year old audience member, i KNEW that Greedo was telling Han that he was going to kill him and Han shooting first was justified and smart, not just LUCKY. ...sorry, babbling. FactFiend reminded me recently that even now, George Lucas still tinker with Star Wars to get it "perfect," to Fix it in Post is not impossible, and I'd buy it again with THOSE type of changes, and not the overly almost cartoon appeals to kids - who don't need things that blatant, don't expect them to be dumb... Sorry. I loved this. Thank you for sharing. I love seeing Vader kick ass, I'm the weirdo who considered him one of my first heroes. Thank you.

Jaby... if you wanna see a great emotional "recreation" of a scene you need to watch "Before the Dark Times." It is the scene of Luke finding Ben the first time in "A New Hope" and Ben explaining what happened to his father. But it is done in a way where the add footage from the prequels to piggyback things he tells Luke. And the intercut scenes and accompanying music are absolutely stunning and gut wrenching at the same time. It's really incredible. Please check it out.

Regarding the comment at 8:14 -- they were limited by the original props, but not really by how they looked on camera if you moved them a certain way, it was by how fragile they were. Originally, Lucas planned to create the glow totally in camera. The lightsaber blades were three sided wooden rods, and the flats were covered with a scotchlite retroreflector tape (same stuff that's on highway road signs). In the handle was an electric motor that would spin the blade along its long axis, and the rotating blade, with the luminescent tape would create a bright shimmer effect under the studio lights. That didn't look good enough on screen. The glow effect only worked if the blades were at just the right angle, and whenever they weren't, they were clearly visible as rods -- the so they ended up rotoscoping the glowing blade in during post production. They realized this right away, and immediately planned for the rotoscoping while filming was still underway, so they could have made the duel use bigger, more sweeping motions of the lightsabers if that had been the only issue. It wasn't; the props used were always those fragile ones with the rotating blades, and they couldn't be swung about or clashed together very vigorously, or the blades would break. Even so David Prowse kept breaking the blade on his and it had to be replaced each time, stalling filming. This is one reason why they got Bob Anderson to wear the Vader costume for TESB (and they still replaced the lightsaber blades with sturdier, non-rotating aluminum ones); the other was that Bob Anderson was an experienced movie sword fight choreographer and could simply do a better job for the lightsaber duel.
@SWTobito07025 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in ANH the props department managed the glow effect by covering the lightsabers in reflective material which would reflect the light from the cameras back into them. Sadly that also meant moving the blades out of a certain area within a camera's field of view meant it would lose all that glow. Furthermore the material used to create the blades was very fragile meaning any kind of actual fighting choreography was practically impossible. Add to that Alec Guinness' age and the Vader suit being somewhat clunky to move in and anything other than what we saw on screen was not doable.
@asxulxetesteronsxez5385 жыл бұрын
There were multiple reasons for why the fight played out like it did in the original film. 1. George based the style of lightsaber combat off of Kendo, a style developed by Samurai after skills with swords in combat became null with the introduction of firearms. It's a popularized sport today where the first person to touch the other scores the point, so nothing fancy is necessary to win. Lightsaber combat would be much the same way, first person to touch the other guy would probably win. 2. The age of Sir Alec Guiness and the cumbersomeness of the Vader suit were factors that restricted motion and speed. (3). What she is referring to in how the lightsabers were made is seen in the scene with Obi-Wan training Luke aboard the Falcon. They were originally sticks with reflectors attached designed to reflect the lights of the set into the camera to create the illusion of the saber generating light. This was abandoned, however, after that scene. All other scenes were just colored in post.

I love this reimagining. They made that scene more epic, and I love how they cut it with the original scenes. Don't get me wrong, the purist in me loves the original, and I always will, but wow this was really fucking cool. What fans can do blows me away. Hey Disney, start broadening your search for talent farther then just the ''Top dogs'' in your bubble. You might find some true fans who are artists.
@jimhults49164 жыл бұрын
Well, in the 70s, they don't have a fight like that but, it happens when George Lucas shot piece by piece for the whole cut of the movie. The stunt coordinator Bob Anderson was the fencer was made the choreograph the style.

She is right.. The Original Light sabers where rotating filaments that would refract the light and they could not clash to hard with them or they would brake. I loved this and the only line i would have added would have been " You should not have come back " . That is one of the issues people had with Vader from Rogue one how bad ass he was with his saber but you look at one week later in the time line he is nothing like he was in Rogue one. That is Tech with the sabers ...

It's a fan edit of the movie, and the creator had the same intention with this scene, only he didn't reshoot anything. Just changed the editing. The difference from the original is amazing. You can find the scene on KZbin. About the original Lightsabres, they were easily breakable, so they had to pretend to fight with swords that they couldn't really bang on each other...
