Are they actually going to be filming on Skellig for Episode VIII? That sounds like a fucking nightmare.

Lots of the scenes for Episode VIII have been shot on the mainland: on the Dingle Peninsula, right by the ocean, the closest point to the island itself. They even recreated the beehive huts from Skellig Michael on the mainland to accommodate filming. Aside from the difficulties associated with filming on the island, the production team wouldn't have been allowed set up filming equipment at the real huts, because of the risk of damage to an extremely important historical and cultural landmark. The landscape on the mainland is largely the same as on the island, as it's only a few miles away, so you won't be able to tell the difference in the final cut.

The problem is he took it too far. It restricted him to making everything look like the Earth. The prequels showed, as of course there is, a larger world out there than what 4-6 showed (which themselves even managed a few more exotic looking places than even TFA). He also went way overboard being afraid of 'boring' politics and backstory. It ended up leaving many at least partially confused and made the movie a bit shallower and weaker after the Star Wars world had been taken so far behind just a few swashbuckling tales of rag-tag gangs. Just mix in 15 minutes of more backstory and politics, show us the New Republic, explain, in the movie, why Leia started a splinter group, explain why the main government didn't take the First Order seriously. Show us what we waited 30 years to see! The New Republic! It would also have added a lot more impact to the scenes where the Death Star III blew up the planets. He was as extreme himself as anything anyone complained about.

Well 1.) There was a comic that explained that, and 2.) The Last Jedi is supposed to dig deeper into every characters and conflict. Lets just wait and see.
