In Legends, about 100 years after the movies, he recounts his story to a Keeper of the Whills. This made all of the opening crawls canonical in universe as R2 being the narrator of the movies. He's telling god the story about his friends so they get recorded in the Journal of the Whills which is a catalog of all the most important moments in Star Wars history. He's reminiscing about his friends.
