I played the entire Wings of Liberty campaign in Starcraft 2. For one good reason: it's free! And I found it to be surprisingly good, although of course I will find plenty of random rants and tangents to engage in as we go along. It was also good to take a look at a strategy classic, but that said, I found that in some ways the general vibe of the game undermines the idea that it's some kind of seminal work in game history. Well, dive in for the rants, let's get started.

The loss of TotalBiscut was a great loss to the video game industry. Very few people can say "I am now going to rant about gameplay options for 2 hours" and have me riveted. I'm glad his life helped to inspire you to make these types of videos

"Whiskey in one hand and a revolver in the other. [...] To me it comes across that we're suicidal." That honestly might have been the intention at some point. Jim Raynor's alcoholism was originally a plot point, and while it was removed before the game was released you can still see pieces of it here and there.

That's interesting. Feels like they are on the verge of making it a thing where the crew hates him and it ruins the rebellion but at least he got sarah back, something like that. But perhaps the developers wanted him to be more of a hero, so he's just grumpy and drinking 'non-alcoholic' whiskey in volumes that would kill an ultralisk.

Haven't finished the video yet, but since it's been brought up so much already, it's Tab to cycle through different unit types within the same selection. This allows you to use each units hotkeys and you don't have to double click the model or anything.

I think you got the part about multiplayer at the end wrong. To get ranked you have to play 10 games in the season, which goes on for like 6 months. There is no requirement to play x amount of games per day. Really entertaining video! As a guy who's been playing Starcraft on and off over and over in the past 13 years, it's really nice to get an outside perspective on it :D

Good good... Now play the first one. Now on a more serious tone, Starcraft 1's campaign is actually interesting from a gamedev prespective as you can really see how the campaigns are extended tutorials and are quite meticulously crafted for the players to get accustomed and yet challenged (eventually), but like, for players that are basically brand new to RTS games. Terran campaign which I remember better than the others: - Mission 1: Go to a place, build 10 marines. - MIssion 2: Build enough to go to a place and kill a "thing" - Mission 3: The easiest and most boring mission. "Do you know how to defend?" - Mission 4: So, you have no building and only these units on this one. Have you been doing the most basic of micro in the world? Do you know you CAN control your units? - Mission 5: Do you know you can use dropships? Hell, do you know they exists? You NEED to build them to get through this mission buddy, you'll see why later. But, oh no! The direct path is filled with Zerg Anti-Air, you can't just fly them in, and the ground path is filled with Zerg static defence. It is still very easy, but you know, you need to do something. - Mission 6: Ghosts exists! This is Kerrigan, she is a ghost! Don't worry, she is not important. Stealth is a thing. And oh no! To complete this mission, you need to destroy the enemy base, but the enemy base can only be accessed by air... you'll have to use those dropships we taught to you about last mission or use the Air unit you just unlocked. Don't worry, we have already provided you with a starport in your base. - Mission 7: Training wheels are starting to come off baby! You have access to THE terran unit now, the siege tank (and the science vessel), the confederacy has you surrounded, but you need to strike deep into their base and bring an scv to it! It won't be that easy! (Unless you know the way to beat this mission in less than a minute). - MIssion 8: It's DUKEING TIME! Do you know that you can LIFT your building as a terran!? Well, in this one, you are FORCED to do it. And use dropships. Have fun CLEARING THE WHOLE MAP! - Mission 9: How about a plate of Protoss, with a side of Zerg that you cannot kill? Interesting, right? - Mission 10: Finally, the tutorial is over boy! Now have fun taking that Iona Canon. it's in a space island. You DO know how to use dropships, right? Now that the tutorial part is over I am sure the rest of the campaign is full of interesting and challenging maps... oh! Wait! This one is the last! Anyways! Have fun playing as the Zerg! Then in the Brood War expansion, the game says "So... we know that you know how to play the game. Let's do this"

When StarCraft 2 came out, I bought it and was in the air force at the time. Beat the entire campaign on the flight line as I had bought a car adapter to charge a laptop and coming from brood war in highschool it was phenomenal. Here we are 14 years later and it's still relevant. Recently got the free version and found out they added 2 more campaigns and a purchased one and been working through those past few weeks.

The general consensus in terms of campaign story is SC1+BW > SC2:WoL > SC2:HotS > SC2:LotV. SC1+BW are much more serious and much less eye-rolly. I definitely recommend them as long as you can get around the dated game design.

You know after watching you play Starcraft 2’s and Homeworld’s campaigns I wonder what your thoughts would be for Warzone 2100’s Campaign. Because Warzone 2100’s campaign has you design, make, and gain veterancy for your units (during/after each mission) with them persisting afterward for the next mission. The way of which the average Mission goes is that you secure a forward operating base and then complete mission objectives that are stated by the pre-mission briefing such as collecting tech, recon, and or eliminating enemies in an area. As you progress throughout the campaign you unlock new buildings and unit parts that help with the many problems that occur during your campaign such as a building that can heal units or parts that turn units into construction trucks, tanks, or planes. When units or buildings become obsolete you can always recycle them to gain resources and more importantly unit veterancy which always gets transferred to the next unit produced, so that you never lose progress on your units. When you are playing you're mainly of course doing the regular RTS control such as directly ordering units to move and attack or patrols/ceasefire but also you can assign units to buildings or commander units for them to be directed by them for example assigning artillery units to a radar tower will have them automatically shoot at enemies in range of it or with tank units to a commander unit will have them focus fire on an enemy or back off when health is low. For some final thoughts on the matter, I think it would be interesting to see you play Warzone 2100. Also, it's just fun to see you play and hear your thoughts on games. PS The game is free and I would recommend playing the community version which you can get on their website or more easily on the Microsoft store.

I highly recommend playing this campaign again later but on Hard difficulty. Don't worry I'm not very good at this game either ( i don't play multiplayer ), but playing at higher difficulty makes you control a few unit types rather than make every single unit, some basic army micro, such as stutter step (shot, move closer to enemy, shot, repeat) this prevents ranged units backing up and not fighting. Also makes you appreciate the tech tree and upgrades choices, because I can tell that the game was so easy for you that the upgrades didn't have a strong impact. If you decide to play Heart of the Swarm campaign, I'd HIGHLY recommend playing on Hard difficulty. For some odd reason the difficulty on that campaign is much lower compared to Wings of Liberty to the point it's not satisfying. If you beat the Wings of Liberty campaign on Hard, then play Heart of the Swarm on Brutal, they're the same difficulty.

Oh yes you're very much 'supposed to' have played Starcraft prior to Starcraft 2. That is an obvious design flaw mostly because Starcraft was so popular. Of course the devs could still have tried to fill in some of the blanks for newcomers. Starcraft 2 is very much an iteration of Starcraft. But there are quality of life upgrades and mechanical changes and additions. The classic feel Starcraft 2 has is also because Starcraft was so popular and especially because it became an early esport (notably with its expansion, Broodwar), The devs wanted to retain the feel of what made the first game so popular and attractive for a thriving competitive scene. - edit - The Goliath and certain other units are interestingly not available in Starcraft 2 competitive multiplayer (but I have no doubt that there are modded gamemodes which add them in) which. They are in the game again because, you guessed it, they were in Starcraft. Although, having said that, there are also units (mostly just unit variants) which are not in the competitive multiplayer and also not from the original Starcraft.

If you try any future Starcraft 2 campaigns which i think may be interesting just from a comedy perspective as the narrative knowingly hurls towards a cliff. I would suggest if you give any future Starcraft stuff the Tab use + playing on 1 difficulty higher would both alleviate a lot of your boredom.

I used to play this in I think my single digit years when my family had a Mac, but after it burnt itself out, Im now have been using Linux my whole life. Would like to play it again one day but it cant run on Linux sadly. Have you played Starcraft 1? Might give ya some better context for 2. If the game felt too slow for your speed wise, theres a keybind that makes it slower/faster for Blizzard games usually. Selecting a particular unit type from an entire ball of guys? Select them all, then click on the unit type you want in the bottom middle box and it should select all of that type iirc. Bottom right box should show all the options you can have a unit do, patrol, stop, move, attack but I think thats also in the options, a bit annoying as some players may think theres none of that.

Again I do recommend you watch a video about Starcraft lore because it is interesting but if you want the SPOILING shoddily remembered and probably rambling cliff notes read on ** SPOILERS for the Terran Campaign of Starcraft 1 ** . . . (keep in mind a lot of things would end up retconned or expanded on after the first game came out by comics and bonus missions) The game starts with a cutscene of a Terran salvaging ship being destroyed by an advanced alien ship. You start as the magistrate (yes the player is technically an entity in the game) of Mar Sara, a backwater colony of the Terran Confederacy (all similarities with THAT other confederacy are quite intentional), the major, but not only, Human space nation in the Koprulu sector, a far flung part of space where the "dregs" of Earth, 40k (^^) prisoners, were thrown at via automated giant prison ships who intentionally destroyed their engines getting there. The Terran Confederacy achieved superiority in the sector by using psychically gifted Ghosts to assassinate political opponents, carpet bombing planets with nuclear weapons and forcefully conscripting criminals kept in check with inhibitor chips to serve as marines. Before being sent to the colony you are given basic military command training. Your first order from the Confederacy is to relocate the colonists to the 'wastelands' for reasons with the help of local sherif Jim Raynor. On the way your forces and Backwater station get attacked by strange creatures (The Zerg) and with the Confederacy offering no help you and Jim form a militia and destroy the infected command center where the zerg seem to be coming from. At which point the Confederacy's general Edmund Duke declares you, Jim, the militia and all colonists on the planet as traitors for destroying a "vital Confederation installation". Clearly the Confederation has something to do with the Zerg as they promptly arrest Jim and almost everyone involved in that attack. Things get even worse when it becomes obvious the zerg are a lot more numerous than you thought and the entire colony is about to be overrun by the ravaging horde, helped in no part because the confederacy arrested a lot of the local militia and refuses to engage the zerg. General Duke declares he has no intention of coming to the aid of rebels and leaves you to die. An offer to help you evacuate comes from Arcturus Mengsk and his Sons of Korhal resistance movement, a movement created to overthrow the Confederacy because the Confederacy employed those ghost assassins against Mengsk's family (mother, father, sister) and nuclear carpet bombing against his rebelling planet Korhal (none of that backstory is mentioned in game AFAIR). After a very long "survive 30 minutes" mission you evacuate what's left of your colony and join up with the Sons of Korhal to at least discover what the Confederacy is up to and you know, survive. You go on to rescue Raynor from a prison ship, then raid a Confederate research installation to get some info and flee from Mar Sara to another planet, Antiga Prime. The advance alien race you saw in the intro cutscene, The Protoss, promptly shows up with a massive fleet and incinerates the entire zerg infested planet. You help liberate Antiga Prime from the Confederation with the help of the psychic/telepath Sarah Kerrigan, a former confederacy ghost. The zerg also arrive at Antiga Prime and manage to down the flagship of the confederation general Edmund Duke. On the idea that a general could be valuable, the player and Raynor are sent in to rescue him from the zerg. Rescued and promised a high ranking position Duke is convinced to join the Sons of Korhal. The info we stole earlier reveals that the Confederation had created a psi emitter, a device which could call the zerg to it (using a ghost's psionic powers). Mengsk suspects the Confederation is going to use these to get the Zerg to destroy their enemies without it being seen as a Confederation attack. We use the psi emitter to draw in the zerg to destroy a confederate force that had arrived to attack us, flee and watch the planet get incinerated by the protoss again. Turns out the time is right to strike at Tarsonis, the capital world of the Confederation. Dukes clears out the orbital installations and announces he has just planted a Psi Emitter, a part of the plan that was kept secret from Jim, Sarah and the player. The zerg swarm the planet, overrun it's defenses and start laying waste to it's cities. The protoss show up again but this time rather than incinerate the planet from orbit descent to the planet and engage the zerg in ground combat. Fearing the protoss will allow the Confederacy to survive Mengsk orders Sarah Kerrigan with a small task force down to the planet to New Gettysburg to attack the Protosss before they can defeat the zerg. Jim Raynor, who has gotten close to Kerrigan at this point voices his concerns with this plan and the safety of Kerrigan who brushes his concerns with "Arcturus knows what he's doing" she seems to trust Mengsk entirely. Kerrigan defeats the Protos but the zerg begin a massive push against her forces, she asks for evacuation but Mengsk refuses it and orders the SOK forces to leave the planet abandoning Kerrigan and her forces to certain death. Raynor is outraged by this betrayal and together with the player and forces loyal to them prepares to brake with the Sons of Korhal. Noticing our actions Mengsk insist we still have a job to due but not wanting to be another pawn to be sacrificed we attempt to leave only to be stopped by a speech from Mengsk declaring "I will not be stopped. Not by you, or the Confederates, or the Protoss or anyone! I will rule this sector or see it burnt to ashes around me." and an Ion Cannon guarded by Duke's forces which we must destroy before escaping. We do and we do and that ends the Terran campaign of Starcraft 1 as the cutscene of Mengsk inauguration as Emperor of the Terran Dominion. out of game lore: - turns out one of the Ghosts that killed Mengsk's familly was a brainwashed/indoctrinated Sarah Kerrigan, and Mengsk knew all along. Which makes his betrayal a lot less impactful imo, 'oh he did not abandon her and her troops because he is a massive Machiavellian jerk with an agenda but because she killed his mom, dad and sister'. - you may think I'm skipping over lots of character development, especially between Raynor and Kerrigan but no, there's barely anything there in the actual game, a few lines of dialogue and a lot of it is implied by how they talked the few times they talked to teach other. - the current crimes of Arthurs Mengsk from this campaign: betraying Kerrigan, Raynor, the player and countless others to become emperor. Trying to kill Raynor and the player. Feeding Tarsonis to the Zerg. Killing Protoss and preventing them from defeating the Zerg. Getting countless others killed by the zerg as result of causing the collapse of the Confederacy and stopping the Protoss. Giving the zerg a very powerful telepath hell bent on getting revenge. Being a power hungry jerk. - just like you noticed depending on skill and difficulty it is entirely possible to borke the intended storyline of the missions (wiping out the overwhelming force attacking you for example during the evacuation and then waiting for 20 minutes on an empty map). - despite seeming that the zerg are a Confederacy bioweapon running rampant they and the Protoss are both created by an ancient race of precursors (the Xel'Nagga) - there are indeed several other human nations in the sector which together could stop an aggressive Confederation which is why they were going to use the Zerg to weaken without the fault falling on them

** SPOILERS for the Zerg Campaign of Starcraft 1 ** . . . Congratulation, you are the newest Cerebrate in the Zerg Hive, one of the few functionally immortal creature* designed by the Overmind to control the endless zerg swarm and a different entity from the Magistrate/Commander of the Terran Campaign. The war goes well for us, we crushed the meager terran resistance and laid waste to nine of the thirteen Confederation core worlds. We're also in the process of hunting down what's left of the Protoss expeditionary force commanded by Executor Tassadar and we've just acquired a new tool for the swarm, a very powerful telepath that is even now reforged into blades to point at our foes, a queen of blades if you will. Said tool is one former ghost known as Sarah Kerrigan... which incidentally is sending out powerful psionic messages to former allies calling them all to our little slice of the swarm. The Overmind makes it clear that our life is tied to the Queen of Blades, should we lose her our life will be lost. We relocate the chrysalis housing Kerrigan to the more defensible planet of Char and fend of attacks from Duke and Raynor. During the last attacks by Raynor the Queen of Blades is reborn, and frankly I think she has our eyes... or she would if we had any eyes. She promptly destroys the terrans making it clear that she, like us, are following the will of the Overmind tho she does allow Raynor and a few others to leave showing a bit more autonomy than us, ok a lot more autonomy because she gets to have useable legs, and hands and blades and we're an immobile slug thing. She is also sassy. The Queen of Blades is the Overmind's secret weapon in subduing the mighty Protoss. Tho she needs to undo part of the ghost conditioning she received to do that. We and some other cerebrates, which all seem to have better units than us (stronger, faster, more hp), help her out with that. Unlocking her full psionic potential allows her to detect Protos forces now on Char and we rush in to hunt them down, even accepting a challenge from Tassadar against the advice of the cerebrate Zasz. We come out the winners but it's all a distraction which allow the Protoss to kill Zasz in such a way that the Overmind can't reincarnate them (our form of immortality). Also Zasz brood (his portion of the swarm) is now leaderless, running amok and a threat to the rest of the swarm so it needs to be put down, which we do and we are once again blessed by the voice of the Overmind which explaines that Zasz was killed by the Dark Prelate Zeratul of the invisible Dark Templars using "energies" similar to those of the Overmind which is why he is dead for good, but also that during the attack the Overmind was able to acquire the location of the Protoss homeworld, Aiur, from the mind of Zeratul and it's time for the swarm to go pay them a visit while we and Kerrigan stay behind to kill all the Dark Templars on Char and what's left of their Expeditionary Fleet. Tassadar, Zeratul and a few others escape. The Swarm invades Aiur, it aquires a mcguffin crystal from the protoss and begins preparations for the grand plan to unite Protoss energy and Zerg essence to create the perfect beign. The overmind makes landfall in a cinematic and that ends the zerg campaign.

- SPOILERS for the Protoss Campaign of Starcraft 1 - . . . Welcome to boring town, population boring Protoss. I really dislike the protoss characters, the way they speak and act is infuriating, booming voices full of serious self-importance and arrogance and my eyes just glaze over and my mind just shuts down whenever they speak so I'll let someone else get into more details. cliff-notes of cliff-notes. We are now a protoss commander of sorts. Artanis in fact but we'll be unnamed for the duration of the game. We get one Judicator Aldaris to advise us. Zerg are invading Aiur, we replace the missing Tassadar as executor, protoss forces are barely holding. We heed Tassadar's advice and distract the zerg so we can kill a cerebrate only for it to be reincarnated, because the plan didn't work Tassadar is declared a traitor. One of our big heroes Fenix dies stupidly (his energy blades run out of batteries while he is alone on patrol) and is "revived" as a dragoon. We go to Char to rescue Tassadar and some surviving Dark Templars, destroy zerg and terran in the process, Duke just can't get a brake, and also evacuate one Jim Raynor and his forces The Protoss leadership is now entirely set against "the traitor Tassadar" and by associations us, there's a fight, we win, but good guy Tassadar upset by the sight of protos killing protos surrenders while asking that we keep fighting the Zerg. We, Fenix and Raynor completely ignore Tassadar's request and go rescue him from an obvious sham trial but we stumble into a trap and have to be saved by Zeratul and his Dark Templars. We get a speech from him and we move on to attack the Overmind. The Protoss carve a path through the outlying broods defending the overmind, Dark Templars kill the Cerebrates for good and with the help of Raynor we assault the Overmind it self. It doesn't go well and Tassadar turns himself and his entire carrier into a psionic bomb and kamikaze's the Overmind killing it and dieing in the process. "The Overmind was dead but there was little for the victors to rejoice over. The Swarm, now leaderless, began rampaging over the smoking ruins of Aiur. The trials of the few surviving protoss were not yet over. Meanwhile, on Char, Sarah Kerrigan knew the time of her ascension had come" on to the Brood War campaign, where we'll see what happened between Kerrigan and Sarah... some other time, I need a brake :D

Of all the Starcraft Campaings I've enjoyed Wings of Liberty (sc2 terran) the most. It's just dripping with atmosphere, cutscenes, interesting characters, fun varied gameplay and the best soundtrack even tho the first one has the big life changing plot twists and I recommand looking up the lore since it is interesting and explains why Jim is indeed suicidal. And I've disliked every single Protoss campaigns, they are such uninteresting characters, loud lawful dumb paladins in space.

@35:00 On Camera Zoom Stuff: this has more push-back then you'd expect. Like, one monitor company said they'd made technology that could essentially enlarge one part of the screen, and people were adamant that this was cheating, because how dare people see what they're doing, I guess? I don't get it (obviously,) but some people are very passionate about limiting what players can do in games.

This vid is so much more fun if you pretend he's playing on Brutal and just way better than you.

So uhmm guys I didn't play the first game, didn't look at the hotkeys, chose the second-easiest difficulty, and I'm confused as to what is going on, why it's so easy and why I'm struggling with controls. "I see no point in half of the things, maybe there's more point on higher difficulties, but I dunno." "That's like 2 button presses, clearly we won't be dealing with that." "They are considered good mainly by the people who use their fingers to interface with the game." "I don't know if it's better, I'm sure the game tells me its stats, but I didn't bother checking." Why complain about things like it being too easy if you clearly won't be willing to put the effort to play on a higher difficulty? I have a suspicion this is a troll and I have been successfully got. And yes, I'm biased.

This is easily the worst instance of Devin's habits hurting him. I usually don't mind his laziness as it pushes him to do some macro plays. But I think we reached the point of no return in which, avoiding doing something really did make him bad at execution. SC2 has famous myth about micromanagment being important. That was blow out of proportions - you can reach high ranks with just auto attacking as long as you have good macro. Devin in macro regard suffers from usual SC2 mindset of decision paralysis. Sometimes doing less is doing more - thoughts matter more than clicks. SC2 also testes organization skills of player - the new dimension to strategy in how do you set up your control groups.

Self-trolled by the looks of it, you need to take such comments approximately 100% less seriously my friend.

In response the second comment, I don't know what you mean. Are you saying I did too much micro when I shouldn't have? Doesn't seem like this 'lazy' style is a problem, the game was fine to play, too easy for the most part.

@@OffyDGGI do think it’s fair to suggest that you play on a higher difficulty though. If the feeling is that the game is too easy, then well the most straightforward way to resolve that is to play on a higher difficulty.

@@OffyDGG Yea there were instances of "fight was going fine but then you started microing and making it worse' like in mission with mercenaries you had 3 marines vs enemy 2 marines. In semi-final mission you tried kiting and seems to lost more units that just A-moving. Those are more neglible as both execution/experience can be earned. So far you made an impression of gamer smartly avoiding bothersome things (which is to your credit), but here seemed more that you doubled down on sub-optimal ways - like queuing to full in buildings, which meant more clicks (if you have selected few buildings you save on clicks; also you can control group buildings allowing you to keep producing without having to look into base; double clicking control group centers the camera), stockpiling huge amount of resources or thinking the whole "death blob" problem instead of just alternating between moving and attack moving to move closer (it is called a-step IRC but even if you can't execute it perfectly it would help you with most army compositions more than looking). Everyone has preferences but with time avoidance of some activities leads to more permament detoriation in that aspect. Starcraft 2 is quite panic inducing, so it shows. In your regard I was suprised you didn't deduce some things. On topic of difficulty I have no complaint - probably one difficulty harder was what you were looking for in terms of challenge. Also did you not watch installation? I swear there was whole story from SC1+BroodWar recappped in installation browser.

Come on, you're a veteran, you need to play on Hard. Or play games like Cossacks: European Wars, which are scaled for veterans.

Probably the difficulty select said hard was for those with starcraft experience so I didn't pick it, don't remember exactly though.
