CORRECTION : Two very important points that I was mistaken on. Control Groups - These are in fact in the game. You select your units and can use ctrl + num to bind those units. Unfortunately, there is no visual indicator that this has happened (similar to SC2) so I didn't realize it had worked. I had just assumed that because I didn't see it show up on the UI similar to SC2, nothing had been bound. Speed of the Game - Turns out their IS a speed setting that I didn't realize was there in the options. It isn't exactly the solve I would be looking for, as it speeds up everything, not just build time and such. But it absolutely would have improved my experience. Installed the game again to confirm it's existence. 100% my mistake on both of these. Will try to do some more creative google searches in the future. I did search, but unfortunately most results are still for Starcraft 2. Original comment : So, I fully expect this review to upset some people and to reiterate what I said in the video. This is based on how the game plays today, in a world where Starcraft 2 exists. In a world where Age of Empires IV exists. We all only have so much time and that is the lens that I view games through, and how I tend to review a game. Plenty of older games still hold up fine (Chrono Trigger being an extremely good example). Others, struggle (Max Payne as an example). But there is no question both were great games when they were released. I am not saying Starcraft wasn’t an amazing game, and Starcraft Remastered is a wonderful remaster, but for anyone that does not have nostalgia for this game, particularly if they played Starcraft 2, this may be tough to play through. At least in my opinion. Also, I should have called out the fantastic music. It is absolutely wonderful.

Are You serious.. "still a good gamę" ? It's The best RTS ever !
@davevsgames20714 ай бұрын
It could be both. So Diablo is, IMO, the best APRG ever made. It started the genre. It atmosphere is amazing. YET, for someone that has never played it, it may not be worth playing today for them. The combat is incredibly simple by modern standards. It's slow. It's still a masterpiece, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone today unless it was just to experience it. Starcraft luckily, holds up much better... but it has aged.

@@davevsgames2071 For me Diablo is The best ARPG ever ;) Better thank D2. I really like that "slow" tempo

100% agree on Diablo. For me though, the thing that makes it so special is the atmosphere. Tristram, the music, the sound ("Fresh Meat"). The horror vibes that I don't feel like have existed since.

It's is right up there, but I'd argue that Warcraft 3 is the best RTS both are outstanding but I can sink hundreds of hours to this day into WC3

SC remastered does have control groups. Also the real area in which OG Starcraft shines is in the multiplayer "use map settings" and competitive scene, the action all over the map, the way victory makes the winning race look crushingly imbalanced only to look crushingly imbalanced the complete opposite direction the next game. It's so impossibly difficult to master, with so many ways to express your creativity and skill with where you decide to allocate your attention, It's brilliant! "Use map settings" or UMS games are super fun too, tower defense or RPG games all day long. The single player is just a sad, dated appendage to the multiplayer game where it really shines.

Looking through the lense of a 12 year old today, I dont think they would like it very much. I grew up in the golden age of RTS and this was my gateway into the wonderful world of basebuilding goodness. My children have no interest in playing a single map for 30+ minutes and not getting showered with stupid loot boxes or flashy lights. Lets make one thing perfectly clear, this game is absolutely a masterpiece, but it is also a relic of its time. 1998 10/10 no questions needed 2024 5/10 still fun but slow slow slow And for the record, I watch tastosis on a daily basis so i know exactly how fast paced and intense this game can be if played by the right player.

don't worry about people getting mad in the comments, we just love our Brood War haha ever hear "limitation breeds creativity"? i think that applies MASSIVELY when it comes to older games in general, and especially StarCraft.

you can speed it up on settings you can set 12 unit groups with CTRL+number
@davevsgames20714 ай бұрын
So I did find a speed setting after re-installing. It speeds up EVERYTHING which is a pro and a con, but you are 100% right on that. Control groups though, do not exist as far as I can tell. Had tried it and just re-tried it again. Even switched up the key modifier several times to make sure it wasn't something other than ctrl + a number.

@@davevsgames2071 Nice review! :) FYI, you're supposed to play it on the fastest setting. That's what ladder/professional matches are played on. I'm not sure why they don't default it to that. And control groups (ctrl + num) and adding to groups (shift + num) definitely work. I was just playing the game earlier today. I'm not sure why it's not working for you.

@@davevsgames2071 bro watch any sc streamer and you'll see they're using groups of up to 12 units with CTRL+1-0
@davevsgames20713 ай бұрын
Alright, yep, my mistake on both. As mentioned, for the speed, didn't realized it was in the options. For the control groups, I was assuming that similar to SC2, there would be a visual on the UI that would show which control groups I had set. Just re-download and tested again, and I was able to get them to work. So yep, my bad.

game is not meant to be played in campaign. It is for matches against other people. Campaign is indeed slow, but if you play against humans its insane how fast paced the game is, certainly no slower than sc2

I'd play this, but Mass Recall exists.
@davevsgames20714 ай бұрын
I had forgot that Mass Recall existed. I do remember hearing about it now though. It likely would solve at least a few of my problems with the SC campaign, including no control groups. Wonder if build speed was slowed down or if it kept the SC2 speeds.... Either way though, it's a good callout.

The campaign is great but if you haven’t played StarCraft before, don’t even bother with the pvp.
