I am a big fan of the fish ponds. I tend to always do Sturgeon for obvious reasons, but Blobfish, Lava Eel, Octopus, and Stingray are ones I almost always also do.

You missed something important. Crabs! The first time you fill a fish pond up to ten with crabs, you unlock something with Willy and he gives you a pearl! They're also good for crab cakes.

Crabs also have a chance of producing a nautilus shell - important if you're trying to rush CC before Winter. Mussels are another option, and they max the pond 3x faster than crabs (1 new mussels spawns every day, vs every 3 days for crabs).

@@lunamax1214 I always like to get the unlimited crab cakes at the saloon for a few days after seeing Willy's 6 heart cutscene. Like I'll get at least a few hundred (as many as I can afford) so I have one per day for the foreseeable future.

@@lachouette_et_le_phoque yes, use the seed maker on winter root (blue slimes, mines 41-79), which will give you winter seeds. Plant them in the greenhouse as soon as you've fixed it. Takes 4 days with deluxe speed-gro. If you get an early nautilus shell, you can consistently get to G.I by Fall 18.

Great video on the output of the pond directly, however I think a big addition is going to be pairing ponds with the bait maker. By keeping a pond of each of the top selling fish reproducing you can have an unlimited number of targeted bait. This means that whenever you go out fishing you will be bringing in the targeted fish way more often, and then during the off-season you can build up your supply. Super cuc and stingray come to mind for sure, but one pond set aside for catfish can turn a rainy day into a huge pay-day which moves the catfish pond up the list for me.

Interesting idea but I think the benefit is pretty low for devoting a pond to. Keeping a "bad" output pond so you can stockpile targeted bait vs keeping a small buffer of the bait as you fish it(I just take the bait maker with me) and having that pond for something else.

I just take the bait maker with me for a rainy day, turn the first catfish into bait and use that to fish more, and so forth. The only scenario I see it being useful for to have a fish pond is if you're trying to get a fish that has a low chance to bite, you found one at the traveling cart and want to make a largeish amount of targeted bait to get it (like a stonefish maybe). But I don't think there really is a fish that is that difficult to find.

With Trap Bobber the Lava Eeel is a lot easier to catch. And the best is, its the only fish exists on Floor 100, so every other item you will get wont reduce the durability of the Trap Bobber, means you can use 1 Trap Bobber for 20 lava eel. And you can craft a Deluxe Worm Bin to get infinite Deluxe Baits to have a even higher output. I got like 10 lava eels on one day. lol

The volcano dungeon floor 10 is the best place late game to catch lava eels, they have a much higher spawn rate there! Floor 100 is perfect for Linus' trash quest, you win if you fish trash and you win if you fish lava eel.

I caught my lava eel on my very first day with the statue of blessings when it gave me blessing of the water. Took forever to hook one, but when I did it was super easy. And I was really torn about putting it into the fish pond because it was iridium quality. But it paid for itself pretty quickly in aged roe, especially with the addition of an animal cracker

Thank you for the list! I think sting ray is very underrated. It gives you battery, one of the most resourceful ingredients before you have solar panel recipe. It also helps you produce dragon tooth which is quite hard to obtain. Not to mention cind shards & magma cap! Maybe it's not worth that much when we sell those, but those are keys ingredients for others.

I love Fish Ponds! I never thought about making more than 1 of a kind though. Even with the pretty colours. With the Smoker it might be better to Smoke the Fish you catch and cook with Fish from your Ponds. Which I would not have thought of without you. Thank you! I tend to do the 3 Cave Fish, 3 Night Market Fish, 3 Ginger Island fish, Octopus (when I can get it), Super Cucumber, Sturgeon, Rainbow Trout, Slime Jack & Void Salmon. But the first Pond always starts out as Crabs! Get the cut scene with Willy and change it for the next fish. Sometimes a Pond of Squids (or Midnight Squids) just to get a few Squid Ink - in case your RNG is horrific and Squid Kids don't give you any... I just found out they can drop Ink, been playing for a few years. Horrific RNG... yep.

I’m a big fan of your farm layout and aesthetic! I adore it. I’d love to have a screen shot of it for inspiration. I’m also a fan of fish ponds and slime hutches. Fish ponds can be very handy for various reasons. I like to have a flounder one and a midnight carp for sea foam pudding. I also like to have a lava eel pond & stingray. The sting ray gives you useful things often. Slime hutches are just fun, they also give you slime which is nice to get and it’s a passive way to make extra money. I don’t understand the hate they get.

I do Rainbow Trout because they have a chance albeit small to give a prismatic shard. and I think it's super Cucumber that gives Iridium ore. I also use Blobfish for the Pearls they can give. I just started Ginger Island so I haven't ever used any of those Fish. dang it so I need to get me some Octopus I guess.

My headcannon for lava eel is that they don’t live in lava. The bottom of the cave lake is just covered with fire opals making the water red. Let’s just ignore the forge on ginger island. Edit: meant fire quartz since that their first pond quest

Here's a thought. They normally live in lava (such as the Caldera on Ginger Island). But they're able to live in the pond in the caves because the Fire Quartz heats the water to near lava-like temperatures.

spicy eel is easy to buy for 1 ruby per meal at the desert trader (and ruby can be duplicated via crystalarium if you really want more). I tend to get more than I am actually using from slaying those green flying dragons, so that's another good source. Do you find spicy eel useful? Lucky lunches or pumpkin soup tend to be way better for skull cavern dives IMO, and the latter can be made pretty freely once you have the recipe.

You can also fish one lava eel from the pond every 5 days, because the rewards for 9 eels are about the same, and put it in a fish smoker. If you have artisan and angler the fish sells for 2.8 times the base price.

Some useful ideas there many thanks. I always have around six ponds but I include Flounder for recipes and crabs for same. Sturgeon for Caviar and squid for ink. I never thought of adding blob-fish but will now! 🐠 edit: I have added stingray to my top three as they have given me multiple cinder shards , batteries and after two seasons, a dragon tooth.

#8 Stingrays can also be traded for mahogany seeds. Very good for mystic tree farm. I ran out of maple/oak for my mystic tree farm. I didn't know the Woodskip generated those. That's huge.

I’m playing on the hill top farm and was deciding what my first fish pond will be and recently fell in love with the woodskip. The hilltop struggles with wood and especially acorns and maple trees since stumps don’t spread seeds anymore. I wish their pond changed colors from the tannins in wood

Fish ponds are handy in early game for stocking up on fish that are harder to catch for less fishing-focused or lower level farmers, too, so when they're needed for a delivery you can have some on hand. I usually help my oldest catch things like a catfish or a pufferfish and stick them in a pond or 2 so that there is a stock of 4 or 5 in a chest for when requested, and swap them out after that. If fishing is not a part of the game you enjoy, this can be helpful in avoiding it without the loss of some requests. :)

There is a huge difference between the squid and midnight squid. The first one produces ink, but is also used in at least one cooking recipe, where you aren't able to use midnight squid unfortunately.

Plus (according to the wiki), squid ponds guarantee daily output at only 7 inhabitants, while the midnight squids demand all 10 (for which you'll need an ocean stone)

Now that I think about it, the "lava" where the lava eels live actually isn't lava, it's just water having red color due to the lava eels living there. It explains why your hook and bobber don't instantly get vaporized, and why you can hook up trash. You can even refill watercan. Ofc in a game where you can also refill the watering can in THE OCEAN, can't lean too much to the realistic side lol.

Fish Ponds are super subjective to both a Players taste and needs. They still take up so much room there's a need to think about what you really need. A strategy I'm still thinking through is getting what you need from a fish pond, empying the pond and then adding a more long term plan fish. This can be an expensive strategy because of fish quest offerings. A cycling strategy of ponds is a must if you're playing on a farm with limited land like the Hilltop or the Riverlands that's a must. Also if you're playing on a console where you're probably playing at a slower rate of play is another factor to consider in cycle emptying fish ponds. For example Flounder is a fish that a console player will probably get early and often; therfore, it could be an early fish pond. The Flounder fish pond value is sea jelly for making fish smokers and the Flounder itself for making seafoam pudding. Given that the Flounder is a commonly caught fish once one obtains the sea jelly one wants for fish smokers, has an adequate stockpile of Flounder, and a fish to replace the pond with one ought to rotate the Flounder out of the pond. Flounder fish pond quests are cheap too so not missing out on emptying the pond. Personally i think, for the casual player, Lobster Bisque is better than Seafoam Pudding because Lobster Bisque lasts longer than the pudding does and Lobster bait in a crabpot quadruples the chances of catching a Lobster in a crabpot. Pair lobster bait with Marineer profession and you'll get a load of Lobster for your Lobster Bisque. 🦞 Seafoam pudding with 1.6 is a thing to use sparingly when attempting to catch certain things like some Legendary fish or the Iridium Krobus given how much easier it is to catch Lobster. SDV is very much a game about working for the privilege of doing what you want and stockpiling materials to do whatever you want; use fish ponds to those ends.

Woodskip is definitely not the best for making money, but are they viable if you want the wood? Sure. All of the numbers for this video assume value based on the sell prices, so if you're using the output rather than just selling, the value can go way up, especially for something like wood or hardwood. Wood only sells for 2g each, but if you're using a ton of wood, each one produced from a pond saves you 50g if the alternative is buying from Robin in year 2+. In the end, there's no wrong way to play the game if you're having fun.

I had a rainbow trout pond on my 1.5 Perfection farm...I think I got 3 or 4 rainbow shells and absolutely no prismatic shards after running the pond at full capacity for a couple of in game years. So, yeah, pretty unlikely (unless you use the predictor and shuffle your pond around, I suppose).

I have a few things to say about some of these farms as someone currently doing a fish pond-based challenge: -Sardines: Personally, I wouldn't bother with the sardine pond at all if you plan on making a flounder, midnight carp, and squid/midnight squid pond. It's not really worth it. If you want an early-game fishing buff, place a rainbow trout pond and a periwinkle pond instead. -Sandfish: This farm made me hate Golden Relics. No other notes, my challenge just made me hate golden relics. -Pufferfish/Catfish: Hard disagree. Aside from the humorous nature of a smoked pufferfish being more toxic than a raw pufferfish, most fish that only produce roe are just not worth it. -Sea Cucumber: I’d agree if you do not plan on making eel or lava eel ponds. +3 luck is great, the second highest in the game in fact, but the amount of spicy eel you can get from the eel and lava eel ponds are more valuable imo. -Octopus: It’s not just the hardest non-legendary fish to catch - the only fish harder to catch than it are the glacierfish and legend (crimsonfish is the same difficulty). Still absolutely worth getting for the minerals and the ability to trade the geodes for artifact troves and desert totems. -Midnight Carp: I feel the need to clarify that they can be caught starting at 10 PM, so you have a bit more time to catch them than their name implies. -Ice Pip: It’s actually very valuable if you plan on making a bunch of different fish ponds, with frozen geodes being requested by anchovies, albacore, halibut, red mullet, red snapper, sardines, sea cucumbers, tilapia, eels, tuna, pufferfish, and ice pips themselves. Most of those aren’t worth getting, but if you’re insane like me and want every fish in a pond, it’s one of the most useful fish. -Scorpion Carp: My hatred for this fish cannot be understated. It’s okay, but the two issues I have with it are that it’s difficult to regularly catch and it, like the sandfish, requires that blasted golden relic. -Stingray: Mostly irrelevant to this discussion, but this fish is the reason that my challenge is technically impossible. There is no way to get a dragon tooth without getting exp, at least not that I’ve found. -Void Salmon: Again not really relevant to this discussion, but since void salmon produce both void salmon roe and void eggs, it implies that void salmon and void chickens are actually the same species. Just felt like spreading this insane conspiracy theory. -Sturgeon: I actually dislike the sturgeon pond. Caviar takes longer to process than aged roe, which should be a non-issue unless you're doing something like a fish pond-focused challenge where the sturgeon roe can gum up your roe throughput, but it's still worth noting. If I never did my challenge, I’d probably like the sturgeon pond more.

Eel are pretty good as well. Their roe isn't that interesting, but you can cook them with peppers to make Spicy Eel, which is a terrific buff.

Good question! The gold/day listed were all base values, so things like the smoker or fisher/angler professions will increase them. Usually, harvesting the reproducing fish is only in the 10-20% range of total output, so it might increase your numbers a bit, but it probably isn't enough to affect the overall rankings too much. It can be hard to account for coal in the smoker, since the cost varies, or can be zero if you just have a bunch on hand. I use fish ponds because they produce useful or annoying to farm items, I don't care about the money at all. There is some overlap between useful and expensive items, but my ranking for a Top 25 would still differ a lot.

We the MC can fish in lava naturally bc of inherited forest magic, without it, we cant even stand the heat of lv80 mines. I mean look all of the skeletons lurking around at the icy areas, and then buried ones at lv80+
