I guess that is the peril of free flight, although I remember seeing a guy lose his control line combat wing, somehow he had let go of the handle and the weight of the handle counterbalanced the plane perfectly as it spiralled up out of sight.

As a kid a friend let go of control line handle and the plane flew a fair distance and landed in a road. A truck drove over it.

I'm sure if you look back to your early free flight career your models weren't capable of flying away, losing models is a sign of success
