@@thenutsonyourchin They were probably so busy and for all cpu tests they just popped them in and left them at all default settings in the bios too. I wouldn't be worried on the 5800x3d results, this is at 1080p too where it puts more load on the cpu. At 1440p it puts more of the load on the GPU so its not as bad, but then you need a higher end gpu. Also the 5800x3d always gets bad results if you just pop it in and leave it at bios defaults. If you tweak the 5800x3d with kombo strike 3 or pbo you can gain up to 10% in games easy if you know what you are doing. It will lower the temps by a huge margin and allow the cpu to boost at max boost almost the whole time. I have a video showing what a balanced 5800x3d system can do in atlantis city.

Finally some thorough tests showing the 6-core Zen 3 CPUs against the 8-core Zen 3 CPUs, as well as the Zen 2 ones as well (talking about the non X3D ones). I find it very interesting to see here that the 8-core 3700X is not performing any better than the 3600, and also that the 5800X performs virtually the same as the 5600 and 5600X. Especially with the Ryzen 3000 series, this is a great example of the 3700X just not panning out as a good long term investment for a gaming CPU, as it was clearly better to get a 3600 and then upgrade to a 5600 if you wanted more performance. There have been some rare exceptions where more cores starts becoming helpful in some games, but a newer 6-core is almost always still at least as good as an older 8-core CPU even in games which do scale really well across more than 6-cores. That being said, the 5800X3D is pretty expensive, and just upgrading your entire platform to AM5 and skipping the 5800X3D seems like arguably a better long term choice. If you DO decide to get an X3D CPU, when it comes to the 5800X3D, the price seems close enough to the 5600X3D that it's probably worth paying extra for it, and the 5600X3D isn't available to the vast majority of people anyway, AND it might be better to choose the 8-core Zen 3 X3D CPU because you won't be able to easily upgrade past that on the AM4 platform... But it's not like upgrading to AM5 is all that expensive anymore anyway, especially if you can get a decent price on your old AM4 motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

I was a bit shocked to see how hard this game hit my 5800X in New Atlantas’ MAST area where I would drop as low as 55 FPS just on the CPU. It’s still totally playable, but I regularly get well over 100 FPS in AAA games paired with my RTX 4080, and to see the CPU be the bottleneck here at 60 FPS is so weird. Luckily, this is a perfect problem for DLSS 3 as now I don’t go lower than 85 FPS in the worst case scenario and am almost always above 100 FPS at 4K high/ultra settings. It’s a crime they didn’t package DLSS 3 or FSR 3 in this game for how much it brutalizes our CPUs.

It's really not, it's just one of the first games where RAM matters and people who bought 5800X3D were misinformed that the cache meant they could cheap out on RAM and be fine. As long as you have a high-end PCIe 4.0 SSD you get a lot more performance out of an undervolted 5800X3D with 3800Mhz memory than with 3200mhz memory. Looking at these numbers I guarantee it was done with a PCIe 3 SSD or low-end PCIe 4 SSD and low memory frequency. I get 100-120FPS with 6950XT and the HUB optimized settings.

@mikfhan

Yeah if CPU load % is hovering around 30% the best bet is probably getting the fastest 4 core 8 thread CPU you can afford, but then you hamstring yourself for other games that DO use 6-8 cores properly, so not very future proof. Hoping BGS can adjust Creation Engine 2.0 to use more cores fully, but would not keep my hopes up for massive changes post-release. Xbox series S (the slowest of Starfield consoles) has 8 cores 16 threads so they can't use consoles as an excuse, it would also benefit consoles not just PC to use more cores. I think if possible a Cpu upgrade would help. The 3080 is a nice card, your being limited by your gpu. I just upgraded not long ago from the i7 7700k. I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the performance of Starfield. That being said my 7700 and a 1080ti got me to this point even running most games at 4k 120hz. I gotta say starfield needs serious optimization here. Nvidia not having DLSS is also a huge disappointment.

@@idiotreviews I Agree, but I'll keep it for now. Cpu is running 5Ghz and gpu is at 97-99% usage, so won't see a huge lift and I don't think it's worth the expenses atm. Remember that they use a 4090 in this video which will always be bottlenecked by an 8700K. Might eliminate some microstutter though. In one of the cities a bit into the game I thought it was a bit sluggish. Turned on fps counter and it was down to 45 fps. I use the high preset in 4k. @@KinGzeDK Well I think if you look at the Cpu videos for new games like starfield, it would make a huge improvement to upgrade your cpu. The 7700k and the 1080ti (Your card is much better) ran 4k for every game I threw at it. I found any game other then starfield or crysis 3 (Sorry but it's true) could be run on the old setup @ 4k with just about everything maxed out. Call of duty, Diablo 4 and hogwarts legacy all run at high settings in 4k around 60 fps. So I do have a question though. @@KinGzeDK Glad to hear everything is working so well for you @4k. I also run 4k Ultra. I did find my old setup running the i7 7700k and a 1080ti ran Starfield. Now not at anything like 4k ultra or even high was playable (At launch) in my eyes running at full resolution. Some would say the game ran ok as it was about 30 fps with no FSR. When I turned on the Fsr and lowered the resolution the game ran not too badly considering the systems age. The new driver update seemed to add a tiny bit of performance to my current setup. This tells me the game was not well optimized for PC at launch. At least on my system. I'm unsure if AMD users are getting any increases in frames per second via driver optimization, or if it's the same as at launch. I should also add that I didn't buy a PC for Starfield. It just happened that I got one a few months before the game launched. I wonder (possible video?) what the difference would be between drives? I know they said SSD only but I am running all Nvme but it's running through a Dock via USB 3 for my main. My drive inside the system is nvme also. I wonder what a normal SSD runs like and also I'd love to hear how an old plain hard disk drive works. Does it make a huge difference in loading and play times? By how much? It would also be really neat to see how it would run on a regular hard drive even though the system requirements say an SSD is needed. One last note is a Thank you for your replies.

@@TUTruth They basically said that games "requiring a minimum of cpu cores" is a misconception, it's just that cpus with less cores in the same or older architectures tend to be weaker. In other words, single core performance is still more important for games than more cores.
@THU31

IPC, clocks and cache have always been more important than core counts for gaming. In most cases a new 6C/12T CPU will be faster than an older 8C/16T. Even the newest 4C/8T will be faster than a much older 8C/16T. But there are games that can utilize a ton of cores, like Spider-Man Remastered. That game can even actively utilize E-cores when you get close to 200 FPS.

In the '70s, my parents bought me a simple games console and lightgun, followed by the revolutionary Atari VCS. I've been in to computers and gaming ever since, and for decades I used to build and upgrade my PCs regularly. But some things don't change. (1) New games often push the hardware to it's limits, and (2) some people get so hung up on frame rate numbers and detail levels, they forget that you don't NEED either for a game to be fun and extremely playable. 🙄 Ultra fine background details look great when you're just admiring the scenery, but most get "lost" when actually engrossed in the game. Nowadays I just upgrade using "outdated", but cheap parts. Then I buy games that run on it, which have by then come down in price too. fun. Same fun for less money. 😁

Couldnt agree more :-) i happened to „need“ the newest and shiniest in gaming tech available, but now as a parent, now i concentrate on things more important (in a gaming context). I bought the Steam Deck, which showed me, that you indeed dont need the highest settings, in order to have fun playing a certain game, which inevitably led me to wait and see if and when it is plausible for me to upgrade. What i would like to add is the fact, that even low(er) settings often deliver acceptable visual quality while providing really nice performance numbers.

I severely doubt AMD would take that massive PR risk for basically nothing to gain.

Still doesn't have native DLSS support. And neither AMD nor Bethesda have stated that DLSS is not blocked by the terms of the sponsorship. If that's the case then they did block it and then unblocked it when called out (GN Steve was concerned about this), so at this point it's a case of "who knows?" Fingers crossed it isn't repeated as the DLSS community mod seems superior to FSR, which also throws the "but it's difficult for devs to do both" argument out the window.

AMD's PR and Marketing have both been notoriously bad which makes it 10x more illogical to jump to that conclusion than it would be for a different company.
