Starfield - Confusing chat with Starborn

*** SPOILER ALERT ***
At some point, I and I assume everyone else has a chat with the Starboard and you get to choose sides. I found this a bit confusing, so had to record it and what it again to try and understand it.
Still haven't decided yet. :-)

Basically: The Hunter thinks anyone who CAN get the Artifacts should, and the Emissary thinks only those deemed worthy - by the Emissary themselves - should enter the Unity. I think Bethesda did a (brilliant, if I may be frank) bait-and-switch with the Emissary and Hunter. They make the Emissary the more passive - but bull-headed - one, and the Hunter the more aggressive - but all-round more reasonable - one to trick you. They put the Emissary in white and the Hunter in black to fool you into thinking 'oh, white is good, black is bad', but in actuality I believe the Hunter is more the 'good' one in this choice... though that's not a high bar. They're both arguably morally gray, it's just that - as the Hunter said - one's more honest about it. You continue this conversation by talking to one of them and basically stating who your allegiance is. Or just say 'screw 'em' to both of them and go your own way.

This would be true except the hunter kills your friends you literally find an alt world where the hunter killed everyone

My Starborn has made it her mission to hunt every instance of the Hunter through the Unity. The Emissary can fook right off too.

​@@azeria1so? I found an alt world where a version of me killed everyone. The hunter that killed your friend (lover in my case) gets to die because it's personal, every other version of hunter has nothing to do with me and is reasonable

I never sided with the Hunter at first, but the more I play the more jaded I become. I feel like I agree with him now. The Emissary is self righteous and didn’t actually achieve anything in the main game. They just lurked in the shadows knowing one of us would die and when it came down to it, all they did was threaten us. The Hunter only kills who he has to because he thinks none of this actually matters. Because it doesn’t. He thinks if you can achieve Unity you have the right to it. I see the artifacts as a test made by the creator, so I agree with that mindset. I don’t like his methods, but I do agree with him in the grand scheme of things

You don't have to be jaded to agree with the Hunter. His argument is fair, reasonable, and honest despite his methods whereas the Emissary is at best, naive and at worst, corrupt

I think that jadedness is a big theme of the game. In one of the new universes, you may come across a version of yourself who killed all of Constellation simply because this version of you "wanted to try something different". If you had unlimited opportunities to wipe the slate clean, maybe you'd eventually stop caring about morality. The game does a good job of putting to question whether we genuinely and selflessly care about right and wrong or whether we're just afraid of looking at the consequences of our actions. On the other hand, you are right that it really doesn't matter, for the simple reason that it's a video game. That should be emphasized, because it's easy to forget that choosing badassery over morality can make for a pretty fun gameplay experience

He does achieve something in the main story, he stays behind to guide the right people into unity. And the hunter doesnt have to kill, there are other ways to get the artifacts, but he said that he chose to kill because he thought it was fast an easy. It does matter. Even though there is a multiverse, it doesnt change the fact that these are still people and your actions still have consequences.

The Emissary for me was Sam. I guess it's tied to who you have the highest relationship with at that moment

I was married to Sarah and still got Sam as my emissary. I think it's tied to who you let die in that mission where you fight the hunter.

It's driven home as you jump between realities, with some being way off the beaten path like in Rick & Morty, and after a dozen, at least pretty sure even the most self-righteous Starborn would start to question what matters "from their perspective" when they see the universes repeating patterns.

This would have been how my first playthrough played out, but after Sarah's death I re-loaded a save prior to the critical choice that doomed her. Barrett paid the price instead...

Thanks for that. I was wondering if it was possible to save Sarah. I assume you have to leave the lodge when the Starborn attack?

@@bigdadda06 Yeah, I left the Lodge immediately and headed straight for the Eye. After I saved her I returned and found Barrett dead...

I had Sarah die on my game too. But I but the bullet and went onward. It was way better this way! Barret is much better crew member than Sarah is. She may be able to add a 9th crewmate, but she is not that useful after all. Neither is andreja, whom I married. On my next play through I’ll let andreja die and marry Sarah… just to play it differently.

It's not always Sarah it becomes a choice between your 2 closest companions for me it was Andrea and Vasco

Who dies is different depending on what you do with them. I'll leave it at that but I've lost different people several times.
