It would be best to upgrade at lvl 12 were you get a 20 power reactor and a lot of better pieces. But my best advice would be to board and steal a CF phantom ship that already comes with a 20 power reactor and i did that at lvl 6, but can be done even eralier, as soon as you get the targeting skill.

If you get a Deimos workshop it will have a research station, that’s if you don’t want the pharmaceutical workstation
