When I heard that the senior Bethesda staff all retired about a week after the game came out, I realized what had happened. This game was Bethesda's "Minimal Contractual Obligation" before the senior staff could cash-out their options & leave. Most, if not all of the aspects you mentioned could have been fixed. Between their previous innovations and the open-source work of the modding community this game could have been great. But Bethesda REFUSED to implement any of it which makes me wonder just what they were doing for their five years of development. We have volunteer modders showing more complete production on projects like Fallout London & Fallout Miami that whatever Starfield is supposed to be. And while I understand that there is supposed to be at least one upcoming DLC, without the support of senior programming staff it promises to be very limited in scope. We got a stripped down engine to get itself past the bug reports, the Minimal Contractual Requirement for everyone to head for the door.

Sure you get a new ship and armor and a 5% chance to have a interesting quest change. Surely not being able to encounter yourself in an alternate reality undermines the entire premise of the multiverse story?

The objective of Starfield's main quest is to unlock NG+. Just think about it. From start to finish, you collect all the artifacts. Does that lead to some massive revelation or an ultimate big boss fight? No. You are given a flimsy explanation about the "Creators" and it unlocks Unity which is basically a portal to NG+. You don't defeat Alduin with all the shouts you have gathered and save the world. Oh no! You collect the powers and that's just it. Now enter the portal and do it again and again.

Exactly. In a game about exploration and discovery, the great ending is that you go BACK, and start all over. A game that talks progressive, but acts reactionary, as it were. And the "other realities" are just the exact same one over and over. So what the hell are you discovering there? Nothing. This isn't discovery, this is hell. Stuck in an eternal loop with the only difference being that your magic powers get better. Powers that are almost all utterly useless. To me it sounds like a literall devil's deal, where you trade power for an eternity in repetition chasing something that is useless.

I tried to just have fun on the game by doing what is fun in the game: blasting things. So i stopped doing the UC questline which felt like a never ending string of "talk to this npc, now talk to this npc" so I instead landed in a random spot on a planet in hopes of AI generated locations full of things to kill, then i was reminded I still needed to run 500 meters or more to each location for just a chance at finding pirates or spacers to kill. Exact same experience here. My biggest regret is spending 20+ hours trying to manage inventory and build settlements. I'm not sure why I expected settlements to actually be able to store my items in any meaningful way. I should have just consoled a higher carry capacity but I wanted vanilla for my "first" play through. What a naive ideal driven man I was. I eventually just started using the infinite mass crate at Constellation. They block the fun at every possible turn in this game. @goadfang
@goadfang Жыл бұрын
Starfield is a game about choices that aren't choices, decisions that affect nothing, and your ability to do everything because nothing you do matters. There are, maybe, five actual decisions you can make in the game that actually change the state of the universe. You could save, or doom the crimson fleet, you can take Ron Hope's bribe, or kill him, you can settle the colonists of the Constant on Paradiso, or not, you can choose the virus vs the aceles, and you can spare Vae Victus, or not. And literally none of these choices mean virtually anything. The status of Ron Hope means nothing either way. The status of the Constant means nothing. The Status of the Fleet is just access to radial quests and vendors, and is actually somewhat impactful. The choice between virus and aceles is utterly pointless except to be berated by every single member of Constellation for making the (right) "wrong" choice. Vae Victus can also grant radial quests, though you will likely never do them since they are pointless. And that's it. That's the full depth of the choices you are allowed to make that impact the state of the universe in any way. Even places where NPCs appear to be providing you with a choice to make, the writers sweep in to deny that choice, making conversation with multiple apparent branching paths actually just single linear decision matrix with different ways to emote as you go along for the railroad trip the devs planned for you. This in a game that is all about alternative universes! Bethesda famously tries not to lock players out of content, making every piece of content available to the player in a single playthrough. I never loved this, but it at least made some sense in other titles. In this title though, we are expressly provided a "do over" of the entire experience in NG+. We go to an alternative universe and do it all again, but there are so few alternative choices to make that when we do it all again we are literally forced to make the exact same choices as before, except in the above five scenarios, where the outcome of those choices are largely meaningless. WHY? Why can't I murder every single corporate bastard on Paradiso to make room for the people of the Constant? Why can't I sabotage the UC in the Fleet story line? Why can't Mathis and I actually betray Delgado? Why can't I break Vae Victus out of his cell? Why can't I personally strangle Vae Victus? Why can't I capture Vae Victus accomplice and expose his whole plot? Why can't I kill the enemy CEO in Walter's quest? Why can't I shoot the thief and take the artifact in that quest when we first meet? Why can't I betray Constellation and take their stuff? Why does nothing matter? Well, I know why. The reason nothing matters is because Todd has already decided who we are as a character, and what choices he wants the players to make. There is no agency in Starfield, there is just the illusion of options. You aren't there to decide the fate of the galaxy, or of the multiverse, you are there to reaffirm all of the decisions Todd and team have made on your behalf. You didn't buy a game, you bought a railroad ticket. Todd Howard is the worst Dungeon Master alive.

Cyberpunk depending on the PC setup on launch was actually as advertised. I had very few issues running it, though 1.3 tripled performance for me. Story was great. The small details and intentional design felt refreshing. Each stat and weapon types offered an extremely unique experience. Double jump with body shotgun build? Doom. Tech stealth was a new age Metal Gear Solid. The relationships actually felt real if a bit toxic. I had very few complaints on launch. The only blight was the failed prior gen console release which should've never happened. Their magnum opus Prey 2017 was literally sent out to die with no marketing then acted shocked when it undersold despite high critical reception. So what does bethesda do next? Makes that same branch make a coop shooter that leaned into NONE of their strengths. Machine Games - Brought fucking Wolfenstein back to life with 3 amazing games. Of course then Bethesda's marketing team ran the PR into the ground with New Colossus' marketing. What does Bethesda do next? Makes them develop a coop shooter with in-game microtransactions. Tango Games - Makes a decent first game, amazing second and then shoves Ghostwire out the door with an infamous development. But then they make Hi-Fi Rush What does Bethesda do next? Literally no marketing and releases it the second it's announced. Once again they obviously sent it out to die but didn't expect the warm sales they got, they even said so in an interview. So where does all their money go if they are squeezing blood from their studios? Into making more and more mediocre releases with every new product, too scared to make something experimental or even to their true strengths but instead they release the most mass appealing, inoffensive, out-of-touch focus tested slop. Also it's very obvious they don't want to change engines because if they did, they have to pay royalties to whatever first party engine distributor they go with if they ended up trying to keep paid mods going since their paid mods platform is a milking cow for consoles.

Now with Arkane I though Deathloop was the project after Prey, but yea that and Redfall were awful. Hi-fi rush devs made a good game, but now they got kicked to the curb how kind of the bigger owners. Bethesda is gonna rot like I see all others nowadays with the mindset that RPG’s have to be dumbed down for the masses. Staright to the trash…ES6 is gonna suck as they aren’t gonna learn from the poor writing and world building that was Skyrim and the rest of their games since. Unfortunate since I love the world it is,but can’t stand the idiocracy that is them hating on RPG mechanics.

It's baffling and sad how bad Bethesda fumbled this. The story is boring and poorly written, the gameplay is mid at best, the world isn't fun to explore and is basically a loading screen simulator. Thank you. You covered much of my criticism, most importantly how Bethesda now relies on modders finishing their games for them. I love the modding community, have since old Morrowind, but they should focus on changing small details, adding to the game, not feppin' finishing constructing and fixing them from a beta "early access"-state. Also - the main story - is it just me seeing it having a horrible ending? In a game about exploration and discovery, you end up redoing the same things over and over in "other realities" rather than actually going out discovering something new. NG+ is a horrible concept.

@@randosavich I got as an AMD promotion, many have access via Game Pass. As for retail versions; It's pretty hard to avoid the views of many, perhaps most KZbin reviewers, they're not wrong. SF is impressive on Scope, and Detail, the Ship Builder is magnificent. First time you exit that builder and turn around... However, calling this an RPG is a bit of a stretch, the exploration isn't great, traversal is bad. Some cool creatures, beautiful scenery, but as with other games of this genre... there's only so much a developer can do. There's a reason Star Citizen has still not released. Like No Man's Sky, these are good games as long as you accept them for what they are. There's a KZbinr that reviews games based upon: Buy, Wait, Never Touch. For most people, I'd call it a Wait for Discount or Game Pass. SF has a lot of good elements, but there are too many things that are Dull, or Repetitive, or Pointless. That said, I've played several hundreds of hours, many in the ship builder, many in interesting questlines, many just bored. There is certainly a lot to do, I haven't even finished the main quest yet. I would definitely have gotten my monies worth at retail, but I also would have been disappointed with the product, for the most part. We'll have to see what the mods can do when the Creation Kit releases in a few months.

I agree with a lot said here. The game should've been better than what we got... by a lot! With that said...I enjoyed playing the game (until they broke it while killing chest glitches)... here are some tips to make it more enjoyable: 1. Use the scanner on planets and from space to find poi/ landscapes and features. I found some pretty cool "natural" features on planets. 2. Use cover during gunfights. There is an unmentioned mechanic that allows you to peek in and out of cover while your weapon is drawn. Just walk to a corner, and you'll notice your weapon is held upright to adjust for the proximity to the wall. From there just ads, and you'll peek the enemy. Release ads to get back beings cover. This gave me a little more immersion than standing in front of the enemy and trading bullets. 3. Use far 3rd person in the temple. Also, try to memorize the temples that have the powers you want to upgrade and stick to those mainly when leveling them. It made the grind less grindy for me. 4. Look for space fights and kit your ship for them. Travel between planets and you'll find space poi and dogfights more often. I even found some legendary ships to fight that came up as a quest mission once I approached. This were hella tough and challenged me and my ships capabilities. Speaking of which... spec heavily into the tech column... if you want ship fighting on harder difficulties. Just a few tips to make the game more enjoyable for those that have gone past the return window. It doesn't excuse bgs for this and I no longer look forward to day one games from them... I'll catch the next one on sale.

Jesus Herbert Walker Christ. I heard the Witcher 3 was amazing, but I only played it for one hour before deciding it was not for me. Hell, even if they did absolutely HAD to make it into a giant empty desert, they could still add interesting things to see there that aren't just unlockable landmarks. Plastic. They could've added plastic bottles and containers all over the place to show how even after the planet essentially died, plastic remained, as it's still decomposing. Don't forget that most of the story elements were copied from other ip's. The bad guy in the basement prison giving missions to take out other bad guys was from the Black List, get to the center of the galaxy/unity so that you can rinse/repeat the game was No Man's Sky, the multiverse concept that we've seen done ad nauseum in Marvel movies over the past decade, Hunter being an Agent Smith clone, etc. The writing is lazy and preachy even with copying better ip's. And don't get me started with every member of constellation, male and female, trying to hump my leg or forcing you to choose pronouns to make your character. I get that the dev's have political beliefs and agenda's but I play games to escape from the real world for a while. One of my main frustrations was Outpost inventory management. The personal and ship inventory system is pretty clunky, I've seen much better in games that are over 20 years old, but I could use it. With close to 400 hours in Starfield I've built many, many pointless outposts and still can't pull up a consolidated outpost inventory. You can build skyscrapers out of connected storage boxes but have to go box to box to try to find something in the unsorted inventory. Had they given Outposts the same inventory system that they gave the ships it would have been crap but at least I could find my crafting resources when I needed them. Not that there's much use for crafting other than making upgrades to certain weapons or suits. You can't even craft ammo. And you can do the limited crafting that you need on your ship. There's no real use for Outposts other than as xp farms and to check a box so that you can train certain perks. The game is a 6/10. It's a good time sink if you don't have anything better to do or just need a break from your regular games. It should have been a $30 game, that was the quality level. The only reason I put so many hours into it was because I was playing along with my son, but he burned out at under 100 hours.

I guess someone should tell him that you can steal or buy better ships from the beginning and the ship builder is ridiculously unrestricted and you can delete every ship part and build a 100% custom ship, and space is very empty and boring. I guess your experience was bad because you thought you unlock ships?? It became obvious that you didn't figure out how to do a lot of the ship based content so you called it bad, the Star Eagle is absolutely NOT necessary to enjoy space combat and you should figure the mechanics out before leaving a review.

I knew all of that I did not like any of that so to me it was bad I did say it was better as you went through the game but overall as a new player not fun. Yes star eagle is definitely needed.

@JackTheFallout it certainly didn't sound like you did and knowing that you did makes your video seem disingenuous as you are the first person I've heard call the ship builder restrictive. The Star eagle is a good ship but you can easily build a ship that outperforms it in the shipbuilder. I'm interested in hearing about the other ships you tried using for comparison.

@alexnicklay8626 everything I say in my video is what I think of the game, I tried the original ship you get aswell as the prison shuttle.. And I used the mantis a bit.. I tried to build a ship that I liked the look of but was forced to delete everything becuase of the mass and for me that was an issue... By the time I got to the end of the game I still haven't unlocked the perks I needed to get more mass.. So what am I meant to go ng+ or grind for hours to get better things.

You made me laugh when you said "The story was interesting for me! As in that it was boring and bad"

If you like shooting things Starfield can be a good game I guess. If you like a good story and exploration it's really bad. You can have fun for a short time, but it soon wears thin. Time will tell whether modders can breathe life into the corpse.

Waiting for Xbox mods before I decide to keep playing. Fallout 4 is still fun for me because of the mods

Can they mod out the loading screens? I doubt even years of mods are going to salvage this experience for me. It's broken at a fundamental level.

Starfield -- the game about nothing!

The issues in this game are nothing to do with Microsoft. You have to admit that Bethesda single players games have been getting worse after Skyrim. The writing has been getting worse and worse. This could be seen in Skyrim where the writing was more dumbed down compared to Oblivion. The writing in Fallout 4 was dumbed down further and the story was full of plot holes. Fallout 76 had almost no story at launch. And Starfield is the weakest writing so far. You are totally correct in saying that the world is too fragmented to be immersive. So the game needed really strong writing & interesting characters & quests. But the writing is so weak and the quests so shallow that there is just not enough to keep you engaged & coming back for more. The only questline I found really engaging was the UC Vanguard one. The constellation questline is the worst they have ever done. The starborn dialogue is just so dumb and ridiculous & more than 20 empty temple quests with the same mini game & vision is so repetitive & shocking for a AAA game. The Earth in Starfield is the worst, laziest & just most embarassing art design for a future destroyed Earth in any movie or game. It took me 184 hours to play less content than you get in a 100 hour Skyrim playthrough. And NG+ was a huge disappointment as I could not even change my traits to make the new playthrough feel a little different. It makes no sense at all.

I'm no writer and I'm confident that I could come up with a better story than the shit they made. lol 100% agree with what you said, they want people to play more so why not make a game with unnecessarily long things to pad out the playtime just for game pass and unfortunately people fall for it. There are games like balders gate 3 have so much more content I finished that story and there's still things I have missed And it's an infinite better story rpg everything really.

It's a 10 year old childs "My First Space Story". Actually, that's wrong, because most 10 year olds could imagine a story and a future world far more interesting and exciting than Starbore.

So I guess according to "Bethesda logic" Earth is also "supposen't to be a Disneyland" and Neil Armstrong didn't feel bored when he returned to Earth and found nothing but SAND here? :)
