I think a general description of skills is better for character creation because numbers need context. If a skill gives a 10% boost to laser damage maybe a spacesuit gives 1000% damage boost and the bonus is worthless or maybe a spacesuit only gives a 1% boost and 10% is amazing. You just don’t know if a particular number is good or not without playing the game or looking things up in a wiki. So a description is better for a first play through as you just build a character on the feel that you want to go for rather than optimizing. That can come later.
@Theosis10 Жыл бұрын
I tend to agree, I like the general descriptions. Its good for first time players who are just looking to RP and any hardcore players or speedrunners will have already looked up all the numbers so it doesnt matter to them much. Plus I think most RPG fans are compelled by narrative so giving narrative weight to a skill can be more appealing then pure numbers (not to say numbers dont have their place.) However hemming and hawing over numbers at character creation probably isnt the reactiont hey are hoping to get from this screen. They just want to get you into the game and you can hem and haw later.

With the Chef background having scavenging. I feel like that may of been a thing they found in testing, that characters who have the gastronomy skill and are looking to do a lot of cooking to heal and get buffs or whatever cooking does, also tended to need to scavenge up a lot of food resources to make that play style viable. Possible particularly at the start of a run when your probably not going to be rolling in cash. With the backgrounds there probably would of been quite a bit of balancing between having the skills make sense for the background and also having them be good foundation skills to have for a fun play through.

For the diplomat, my theory is they may have condensed the diplomacy into the persuasion skill because they showed off that mechanic more this time, which may be a sign this system got fleshed out. However it is very likely that other people will be more creative and adept at creating characters and that one of their creations would be preferable for myself. The reason why Diplomat no longer has Diplomacy or Bargaining is because those two skills have been promoted to tier 2 skills. All 3 starting skills for all backgrounds are selected from the tier 1 list (in the original showcase, you can see those skills on the top layer, but now they're second layer). Wellness is a weird choice though. Maybe all the other tier 1 skills don't fit and they could justify it as having better health due to avoiding conflict and therefore injuries?
@oliviermillour7974 Жыл бұрын
As someone who is most likely going to choose Diplomat, this is my interpretation as well. I too fine Wellness to be an odd choice. There must be some other personality/intellectual skill tree that should fit in there.

One of the things I’m curious about is the combination of the backgrounds with traits that kind of go against each other. Does it cancel it out and you’re in the middle with a boost in life pool, or something else.

3:30 It might still be the start of the game. I'm thinking this is standard Bethesda wake up and do your face, but then the rest of the intro happens as a story-time flashback: a playable flashback sequence, maybe with a bit of "unreliable narrator" to leave some mystery for later. Our previous speculation still stands, but now they can cut between sequences with "and then..." and now they don't have to go into detail about how we got there. The reason I think this will turn into a flashback is because the cutscene at 4:37 shows the character's face, meaning we'd have to get our face sorted _before_ this scene happens, otherwise they'd just show a blacked-out visor 15:45 I think it's better. It's more RP and less G. You can always look up the specifics later, but at this point they want you to take a Background because it sounds like something your character would do, not because it gets x% in y 34:00 I'm not even interested in the damage buff... I'm interested in the bounty hunters that deliver a free ship right to my doorstep! >:)

You seem to be approaching the backgrounds from a min/max perspective which is totally cool if that's what you want to do and how you want to play, but they're presented in a roleplay perspective because it's part of character creation and I think that was the right call on their part for what they're trying to make from their perspective. Sure, I'd love to know what the first rank of the lasers skill gives me, but I don't want that information while I'm making my character. In a role playing game our character creation should be about role playing choices and min/maxing should start when we actually start playing that character. If someone creates their character based completely off of what's statically best then they aren't roleplaying, they're just playing it as an action adventure game with character development choices. There's nothing wrong with people choosing to do that, but it is a role playing game in the eyes of the developers so I think that them prioritizing role play over min/maxing in character creation makes a lot of sense.

Then play first person and never see myself except maybe in a kill cam or like in Fallout 4 during dialog it sometimes shows you from the npc's pov. The hard part is figuring out a name. I think the start of the game will be waking up and seeing those two asking us who we are. And of course, we don't remember. "Hey you, your finally awake." I like the details of the backgrounds. Even if I do not pick a background with a weapon skill. I think the changes in skills that are offered in backgrounds now are to match the starter level skills. I bet the others are all higher skills which we have to earn over time. Also, I think they wanted to have each possible starter skill be included in at least one background. From a RPG minmaxing perspective, it's worse from a role play perspective, it's better. If you want to be a chef, the skills you have shouldn't deter you from picking it. Because let's say you want to role play a chef but you don't like any of the skills so you pick something different. Picking something different won't give you any of the chef dialogue options. So to me it feels more like you're picking the background for the role play aspects it's going to unlock and then the skills you get from it are just bonuses.

My theory on why they change the cyberneticist skill from robot killer to door hacker is because other soldier classes built around killing humans, aliens and robots will be able to outshine the cyborg pretty quickly so I assume that the hacker skill is to make them a bit more of a all-rounder rather then just a robot killer. Maybe like the beast master for beasts, you can hack robots to pacify them or get them to give you access. Which I kinda prefer because it shows that your part robot better and maybe you have a brain link to your hacking tool.

Cyber Runner looks to be the stealth hacker and thief role.

I think waking up with the artifact will be the like 'insert back story here' point. Akin to crossing the border into skyrim, where you make up your reason for being there. Maybe amnesia?

With the Background page, you might be able to hover over the description and it shows how much the buff is. That would be an easy add.
@kyriosmalaka2312 Жыл бұрын
In general, only having the Bethesda description and not the description of the buff is bad. Sometimes the descriptions are misleading or just plain wrong. When you combine that with the fact that sometimes the buffs don't even get applied or that they're applied incorrectly, it sure doesn't help bug reporting when players have to guess what a buff or mod is supposed to do. The description is good, but there should also be an inspect button to get the details.

Skyrim kept track of time but the time wasn't attached to any kind of quest or anything. Whenever you use the wait mechanic in Skyrim it would tell you the season the month and the day of week. But it would tell you to you in Skyrim terms. Skyrim's four seasons are different words than our seasons and their months are also different words. Hearthfire which is the name of one of skyrims DLCs is actually the name of summer or spring?

I feel like Scavaging can also be getting Meat or resources off Plants and animals you kill. Thus making Food later.

though the detail to realism is nice, my personal preference is "awesome looking galactic hero," so i hope we can still make one. If not, I hope mods come out quickly that lets us. Now that I finally got to finish this, I'd like to point out that they're have been games where time actually progressed. I know at the least, in the original Shenmue it did, and I believe it was either the first or second fallout game time progressed. In both cases you have only so many days to complete the game, and in the case of Shenmue, the weather changed with the seasons.

Wow, the fact backgrounds now affect the entire game is amazing imo. Each playthrough will feel different because of it.

I would taper your expectations a little. I’ve heard the same thing from a number of games only to have it barely affect your gameplay.

It'll be an occasional bit of flavor dialouge but I wouldn't expect it to give you entirely new quest lines or even single quests,for example im sure you can still do the beast master quest shown off without beastmaster but having beast master gives you a few unique dialouge interactions
@AHungryHunky Жыл бұрын
Id expect it to be more like Fallout 3 or New Vegas where different perks, traits or stats allow you to sometimes take different routes in quests, alter your rewards or just grant you access information you'd otherwise not have. It's enough to make individual playthroughs and characters feel distinct without radically changing the game to much.

when did they say that it will give you some dialoge options thats all they showed unless your talking about traits as well

My assumption as to why they changed some of the starting skills (such as for diplomat) was because they didn't want any class to start without some kind of combat help. Whether that be some extra health or a weapon skill.

I suspect the Explorer background does not have hard numerical values because its still alpha and their working it out in testing. There is room in each of those frames to add a number or two.

An interesting mix for a diplomatic playthrough might be (Diplomat) + (Neon street rat) = some overlapping skills/traits there.

I have a feeling we are going to start on Mercury, in the cave complex shown in the Direct. We will find the Artefact and then touch it, passing out, and then found and woken up by these guys for the character creation screen.

23:57 I swear i wasn't even on shift that day, i wasn't even in the building. I was framed. Now onto serious matters: The traits are fascinating to me, the Kid Stuff will be interesting, i wonder how the parents will react if you console command in a ton of cash and give them a big windfall, will they act differently, will they worry how you got that money? It's interesting :3 I really want a look at Alien DNA and Dream Home too.

I will go Wanted. The extra gear / resources that "appear" when the bounty hunters show up. Loot the bodies for armour and weapons that can be sold or scraped. They may even "hand over" new ships too. Strip the ship weapons over time building the ultimate dreadnaught.

Planet wrap tech, were Asobo showing how Starfield's planets are built via the Dune reveal for MSFS? The tech was mentioned a number of months ago in one of the updates for Starfield with Asobo and Microsoft tech being implemented. Great to conjecture, this game is a great achievement in gaming.

What really intrigues me is that even with all that state of the art approach to scanning faces the stares are still vacant and bug eyed as they always have been. So that will be a mandatory mod. At least the teeth looks like an upgrade from fallout 4.
