StarFlyers - Royal Jewel Rescue (2002, PC)

Katherine Diane Cadell is no ordinary girl with an extraordinary imagination. When Mom’s Jewelry was lost, She becomes Katie Cadet, the greatest Star Pilot in the galaxy. She is part of her best friend AJ The Super Spinner, Klanker, a loveable energized robot made of steel, and IO, her loyal fire breathing flying dragon dog. The player must solve 8 brain-tickling games to help Katie and the StarFlyers rescue the Royal Jewels.
IN SEARCH OF THE ROYAL JEWELS Coming down the stairs of her home, Katherine Cadell has her arms full with a big bowl of popcorn and her mom’s jewelry box. Suddenly, Katherine trips. An earring and a bracelet fall into the fish tank. Another earring plunges into a mug of hot chocolate. And a pearl necklace breaks into pieces, which scatter all over the house. To make matters worse, a ring rolls out the door, and Victor Wexler, the neighborhood bully, skates off with it to the bowling alley. That’s when Katherine enters the fantasy land of her imagination and becomes Katie Cadet, fearless leader of the StarFlyers. In Katherine’s active imagination, the famous Royal Jewels have gotten lost on their way to the coronation of Princess Popcorn. Worst of all, the evil Vexar has kidnapped Captain Signet, the Royal Ring! Katie Cadet and her fellow StarFlyers-AJ the Super Spinner, Klanker, and Io- must explore space, find the missing Royal Jewels, and bring them back to Home Base for the princess’s coronation. Can you help the StarFlyers explore the exciting worlds of Aqua Cube, Hot Chocolopagus, and the Three Moons of Bowlarama in search of the missing Royal Jewels? Don’t delay-if the Royal Jewels are not found, Princess Popcorn’s coronation will be ruined, and Vexar will have the last laugh!
Exploring Space Your job is to help the StarFlyers find the missing Royal Jewels: Pierce, Loba, Bauble, Captain Signet, and the ten Pearlites. Keep an eye out for them as you search the various planets. As you explore, you will meet interesting characters and encounter challenging puzzles. If you solve these puzzles, you may find the Royal Jewels. You may also collect objects to help you on your mission.

I can think of a good after story for this: A decade after Vexar was destroyed, Katie rose to the rank of Commander, having her own star fleet and troops at her command, AJ being her 2ic. Clanker being updated into a super computer, and IO being given a new form which makes him stronger. To this day, the Star Flyers have kept peace, and justice throughout their known galaxy. (I know this game is years old now, but this is what I think might've happened, unless you guys have other thoughts on this childhood treasure of a game)

Challenge accepted: Eventually, things got increasingly harder. After the way Katie and AJ humiliated him more than twice by way of incidents involving ice and/or chocolate, even though he had it coming to him, a seriously beyond pissed Victor Wexlar forced them into a physical fight during recess. During the struggle, Katie caused Victor to trip on his rollerskates and crash and break both his legs and get run over by a passing truck! On the Starflyers side, Vexar forced Katie and AJ into a fairer fight to the death that was interrupted by a giant truck-shaped meteor that collided with Vexar and crushed and killed him! The Starflyers, in a moment of compassion, rushed him to an intergalactic hospital, but it was too late-real-life Katie and AJ called Victor an ambulance. Eventually, while at the hospital, Katie began to struggle with her grasp of the real world versus her space adventure escape. AJ had actually been in on it as well and broke it to her that they needed to pay attention to the real world more for a while. Katie complied, only things turned worse when Victor went into critical condition and unfortunately died from his injuries! Katie and AJ agreed that while Victor may have been a pain in the butt, they never wished death on him (Still, Vexar couldn’t have been truly stopped any other way…). From then on, Katie and AJ, overcome with guilt, stopped playing pretend for the rest of the semester. Years later, they reunited and decided to put Katie’s Starflyers ideas to better use and create a comic book series about it together.

Why is it that, in the 90s, cartoons were so much better quality? 1. Character designs were solid (every detail adds to the design. Nothing is extraneous and everything fits together in harmony so it's appealing, while we know exactly what the character's role is supposed to be. No overdone contrast or shape language, just exactly what is necessary so characters are more themselves/memorable.) 2. The ideas are dynamic. Premises combine two things like "Outer space and Bowling balls," so that concepts are unique and stick in minds forever. 3. The animation is good. 4. The programming is good. 5. The soundtrack is good. 6. Even the compositions in the promo art are more creative and tell a story. I never even played this so am not nostalgic for it, but it feels like I should be because everything has such a ring to it. Why did we go backwards? Cartoons are terrible now, and we put too much effort into the wrong things while having worse writing as a foundation.
