Kandowontu just released their Starfox EX 1.11 rom hack update bringing a bigger, better version of Starfox EX and a quote unquote new Starfox game and new SNES game...and overall Starfox EX is one of the best SNES games around now! Plus it works on real Super Nintendo hardware, on the MiSTer FPGA cores for SNES and of course via SNES emulation like bsnes or Ares emulators! But however you play (MiSTer FPGA alternatives, etc etc) definitely play this game! Retro game emulators included!

Just a reminder: StarFox EX includes the "fast ROM" hack, this brings great improvements to framerate with no overcloking, so game speed is the same as the original

The speed in SNES Starfox is tied to the frame rate. When you overclock the FX chip to increase frame rate, you also make the game run at a faster pace, basically playing the game in fast forward. AFAIK, there is no hack yet that fixes this.

Well not exactly fix but make better. This StarFox EX includes a hack modifying the system to be compatible with "fast ROM" and that has a great framerate improvement without affecting speed and it has nothing to do with FX chip overclocking. StarFox EX has no FX chip overclocking at all

Check the patch changelog. FastROM is now off and the FX chip has been boosted instead: 1.11: -No more hardware builds, there is only 1 patch for all platforms now! -FastROM is off now to maximize compatibility with everything -Enabled Super FX fast multiplication mode to boost performance a bit -Fixed rocks on 1-4 being red -Fixed Map 1 final fanfare not playing -Fixed 6-4 background oscillation on hardware -Changed “21.7 MHZ CPU” option text to “21.4 MHZ SUPER FX” as the name was misleading

I somehow missed this video, this looks amazing, just downloaded and patched a ROM with it, I really recommend people use black frame insertion with these slower FPS games, especially on a CRT, you will get a much smoother feel/look, I used to use it for OOT which can be as low as 17 FPS, ideally you want to frame lock at as high FPS you can, at least 30, then use BFI at a 1:0:1:0 cadence, to give you a 120Hz/FPS frame rate from the original 30 FPS, you also have frame-stacking from the 3DFury (works similarly I believe too subfield-drive), which is even better, but that's a long subject and pricey, BFI is free if using soft emulation, or if you have an OSSC Pro or Tink, but yeah, it can work wonders with old games that have low FPS.

The problem with the Nintendo 64 core on Taki's Mister Pi may come from the memory it uses. There are people testing and playing, they notice that delay They have done a memory test and from 140 it drops to 110

As a gamer who have no experience with Star Fox before (I had a SNES back in those days tho) I see that this version while being creative and fun HUGELY suffers from technical limitation. I love me some flat shaded polygons but this game would benefit greatly have it been released as a standalone indie game on some modern engine with better framerate and draw distance (low res is totally fine for me). I can't see how this is playable in current form without a big dose of nostalgia

No need to hack it! It has 30/60fps support built into the FPS menu! you just need an emulator with enough overclocking :)

@@VideoGameEsoterica You didn’t specify a platform in the video. And if we go along with you moving the goalposts you’re still incorrect, there was at least one game that preceded SF. Star Cruiser had 3D graphics on the Genesis/MD in 1988. I am not an expert on game history, so my guess is that SF’s claim to fame is similar to DKC’s. DKC didn’t invent prerendered graphics, it popularized them or brought it to mainstream audiences. I don’t know, maybe SF has better gameplay than almost every 3D game before it. Three dimensional games from the early 90s and before are not something I’ve explored outside of playing the SNES SF games a little here and there.

Starfox actually showed how uncreative Nintendo actually is, since it and the FX chip were the brainchild of an English developer and his company (what would now be considered a tiny indie team). Nintendo as usual exploited everything and stuck their brand on it. Nintendo has always had a laughable lack of pioneering considering the incredible size of the corporation and the resources available. They'll still be recycling the same five characters in fifty years.
