I really like fanfics and one that I really liked focused on this reality after the ending of the episode. McKay sent a rescue team in time to save Sheppard but he was mortally wounded so McKay got Carter (who he was married to) to heal Sheppard with the Goa'uld Healing Device. He then got Woolsey to offer him a job which required him getting help for his gambling and working with the alternate Lorne who hated him as the chopper crash this Sheppard was involved in killed his cousin. That changed though. Through the story John developed a romance with Keller and fought against a real jerk (the epilogue mentioned that Todd ate him in the end). His life changed for the better though with his name being cleared for a crime he was wrongly convicted of as a kid and them getting proof that the crash wasn't his fault which allowed him to reenter the military as a Major alongside Lorne and get assigned to Atlantis. The epilogue years later had this Sheppard as the commander of the SGC and Lorne leading Atlantis.

I know this scene is filmed in Canada, because of that Norinco T-97 that he was getting shot with. Everyone and their uncle's got one up here, but tis illegal in the US.

This episode was the first one I've seen of the Stargate Atlantis series which I never actually payed any attention to. It is what got me to see the whole series and I admit it was one of the few truly good episodes in a mediocre series. The mediocrity I speak was purely based on bad story writing, given that the special effects were decent and the acting was very good. This remains to date one of my favorite episodes of all time.
