I prefer Stargate's take on the Universe, both visually spectacular and dramatically interesting through the stretching of the laws of nature, the expanse of space, and the limits of time. The basis of the Supernatural show is too quasi-religious for my taste, dealing in themes and personalities best dealt with in actual systems of belief rather than an weekly TV show. I also preferred the way that the Stargate Universe series approached the spiritual side of life especially with the conflicted character of Dr. Rush seeking the meaning of existence through the intergalactic wanderings of the ancient and aptly named Starship Destiny.

People don't realize how much a great science fiction show can impact a person. I grew up with Star Trek on TV first run in the 60s. I wanted to be Mr. Spock so bad that I worked hard in science very early on. Once in college I wanted to become a physicist but the Department moved so I changed to premed. After I graduated, I went on to earn a Ph.D. in Clinical Infectious Disease and later an M.D. in the same. So I became both Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy. I got the chance to meet both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner with my son who was about 7 years old at the time. Both were so great and I had books from both. Mr. Nimoy signed the one by William Shatner and Shatner signed the one by Leonard Nimoy. Those two books are my son's most prized possessions and he just turned 22 and is in his last year of college. Both were very kind when I spoke to them and both were genuinely nice people. It was a great memory to have with my son. I almost feel the same way about Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. I have watched both series multiple times (10 or more each). All great actors who seem to really care about each other. Interestingly, David Hewlett became a favorite of mine from SGA so I make sure to catch all of his stuff when he is in something. His KZbin channel is great. Great interviews.

I've always wished I had even half the mathematical aptitude of Spock. Instead, being one of those "outcast" kids in high school, I took on more of his tendency to try and push emotional reactions aside to deal with people. It actually helped a lot more than I would have ever thought. It does have its downside, though. It's allowed me to view humanity in a more dispassionate manner, and frankly what I see disturbs me daily. And, I really grew to like the McKay character. The writing of the show (both shows, really) was outstanding. One of the most interesting character developments to me was Woolsey. Loved the way both shows took this character that was initially an asshole and turned him into a very likeable character. Especially enjoyed that scene when, while Sheppard's team were on "trial," and Woolsey said, "Now that I know what the game is...I can play it." That just brought a *huge* smile to my face.

A major strength of Stargate is how tight the writing is, characters are consistent, things keep coming back or are referenced, and it's relatively hard to find plot holes

@Gio Corvino Well said. I liked SG1 but loved SG:Atlantis (I also was sceptical at the beginning). I was never a fan of SG:Universe either, it was a snoozefest. I do not understand how SG:Antlantis was cancelled and replaced by SG:Universe. In the former, there were no travels through a Stargate and the characters were travelling the universe in an Ancient ship. Where were the Ancients and what happened to all of the villains from SG:1 and SG:Atlantis? Did the writers and producers of SG:Universe have to work with a smaller budget?

@Gio Corvino Agreed. I found the ending of the SG:Atlantis serie disappointing and anticlimactic. Like in the Star Trek:Voyager series, the crew of SG:Atlantis ended up in San Francisco. It must have felt like déjà vu to actor Robert Picardo who was a regular on StarTrek: Voyager (the Doctor) and a regular in the last season on SG:Atlantis (Richard Woolsey).

Atlantis is my favorite among 3 Stargate`s. It`s more budget-friendly than SG-1 but it had a kinda special atmosphere that made it so cool. Best spin-off ever, I think

SG1 stuck their chemistry with each other,rarely the rest of the base was part of it, they kept to themselves. SGA they were normal people ,they hang out, have fun together. The team had friendly relationships with several other members of the expedition.

Love Joe! Loved how he played John Sheppard....a normal guy thrust into a position of command, stepping up to the plate and totally committed to his role in the survival of those he was sworn to protect. I’m not fond of superhero characters, I like the humanistic fallibilty of a hero that overcomes those situations in creative but realistic ways. John Sheppard did just that, is spades! The whole cast were so great-the chemistry so fantastic...I have not found another series since-that has that quality that makes me care as much. Still a huge fan of SGA, and will always hate the way (the powers that be) squashed this fantastic series.

@ Pedro Valente I agree. O’Neill’s personality & rank was just different-from the moment his character emerged in the original Stargate movie. The tv series changed the character tones of O’Neill and Jackson to be more centrist of each other, more related. Shepard had already bucked the system to help his crewman and was demoted but superficially non-plussed. He remained true to his personal ethics and that served throughout the character, curmudgeonly or not. Was very quick & independent minded as well. Like Daniel he was an introvert and was fascinated by having the ancient gene - seemed that it was mostly a tool, a dutiful key. But despite being a loner and introvert, he was enough of a decent strategic planner & leader that all of the teams were able to their work as safely as possible.

I'm quite surprised to hear that. It was probably the least fav. episode for me in all SG franchise. I have watched all SGx episodes probably at least 20 times except this one episode. I couldn't even bare to watch from the beginning to the end even once; I was mostly on x2 speed or more. I did that just to have the satisfaction of "not leaving anyone behind".

I was born in 1972. SG1 was a huge part of my life from 1992-1997. I currently feel so old, my beard is gray, and so is much of my head........After seeing the actor who portrayed "Daniel Shanks"..........he looks just as old as me. I now am able to go on.

Ya honestly I think Ben Browder would have been better. Atlantis lacked a good lead in the casting. It needed to be either Shepard or the commander of Atlantis and we all know Weir was ten times worse at playing a solid lead, Woosley and Carter frankly didn't suit the role either. All they needed was a solid actor that could carry the show in either of those two roles but they never and the show suffered. It's a stretch but it could have made the show last a lot longer for all we know... Shit they should have even just brought over Jeff Bridges to play the commander on Atlantis and that would have done it.

When Star Gate Atlantis was canceled and they put on wrestling on in it's place I cut the cord. Few of the shows were excellent most were good but a few suxed. All in all of the Star Gate shows I liked this one the best.

At least when they cancelled SG:A it was not a cliffhanger. One could say it was a full arc, the city returning to Earth. What they did with SG:U (love the show or hate it) on the other hand, it's a completely different story.

I am very excited knowing we have more of the series coming. I am in the 18th time of watching all of them from start to finish. Have my children and grandchildren watching them with me. Love everyone and the rolls they play. I know things change, however I pray the writers do not make a lot of changes and the cast for each come back to pick up where they left off. Am hoping Sheppard and Todd (Wraith) build a better trust of each other this time. Joe looks tired, but he is still handsome as ever. I am seriously looking forward to seeing each one of them and hope Atlantis is back in the Pegasus Galaxy. God bless one and all.

Recently got back into Stargate. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I watched SG-1 alot on NBC but never got to see every episode because network tv. Now I watched the movie again and plan to watch all 3 shows and anything else I can get my hands on. Crossing fingers for a 4th series!

Probably doesn't help that SGU took a season and a half to get decent. The first season of SG-1 is by far the worst of the series, and it's not even bad. Atlantis season 1 recaptured that "we're in over our head" vibe that the first 3 seasons of SG-1 had nailed down, but had since grown out of. Then Stargate Universe goes to "we're on a ship in the middle of nowhere, and any place we go isn't going to re-occur for expansion on story telling." There was like 2 exceptions, other ships and that planet Young left Rush on that one time. Everything was one and done, and that's not what Stargate was about. It doesn't help the cast of characters was overly inflated and filled to the brim with pointless melodrama. Rush: Rodney McKay but not funny. Young: O'Neill but not funny. Eli: Carter, but not charming and was a complete clutz. Camille: Wier, with zero god-damn personality. Scott: Mitchell but trying way to hard. Tamara: The Universe version of Ford (he got tossed out), but she's not even interesting. And was I the only one that thought that Stargate Universe was overly dark, I don't mean metaphorically, like every set was just lacking lighting. I couldn't see what was going on. And when I could, it was people yelling at each other. Call it was it is, BattleStargate Unvierse, and it's not even half as interseting.

In Universe they overdid shaky cam which made the series almost unwatchable for me. Also the first season of universe was pretty much dog shit because there were no likeable characters. There were too many scenes on earth because of shitty politics plot and power games. I mean, they spent so much time showing how Telford fucked Young's wife. I mean really? The Cloe / Matthew love story also got way too much screen time. Season 2 of SG:U was a little bit better but in the end the show got the exact shitty ending it deserved. I also want to know Destiny's fate but man they made so many mistakes in that show..

I was never crazy for Science Fiction until my husband introduced me in to Stargate SG1 on 2005. after 15 years I have seen it 6 times, the last one with my 11 years old during pandemic. Now we are on the second season of Atlantis. Please come back with new episodes, when the series ended you still have so much material to work with. Miss you guys!!!

Love them, but it's also so sad to see how old they are becoming. Reminds me how old I am becoming. I got hooked on Stargate during my first Senior High year, even got nominated (in a bad way) as "this year's Stargate [nerd]" the following year, cus every time I had a 1 h break from classes, I'd be watching SG1. That was back in 2006. I have so far completed 4 watch throughs of SG1, 2 of Atlantis and 1 of Universe. Point being, now I am pretty much the age these actors (well at least their characters) were when I watched them growing up... It's weird, fun and scary at the same time..

When joe Flanagan was 40 he looked 27, alas he now looks every one of his 53 years. It happens to all men, we look young for ages then all of a sudden bam you are old. Obviously this doesn’t apply to rob lowe or Keanu reeves who are freaks.

Michael's career on Stargate closed out pretty well, and he had decent work afterwards too i.e. Saving Hope. I felt it was an injustice they didn't close out Atlantis better, especially for Joe. Totally could have done another 2 or more seasons. He had roles here and there, before and after Atlantis... but I think John Sheppard was the one for him.
