This is the director's cut, which I would recommend over the original broadcast version. No harm to Kurt Russell, but Richard Dean Anderson's Jack O'Neill is by far the better portrayal. As is Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson.

Yeah to be honest I had forgotten they were recasted after like 10 minutes, Richard Dean Anderson/Michael Shanks were both excellent!
@alexmckee46833 ай бұрын
Shanks in particular does a great job of picking up certain aspects of Spader's performance and continuing them while adding his own take on the character. Over time he blends these different takes together and takes ownership of the character fully. In my opinion in the later seasons Shanks starts to overact but his performance from season 1 to season 5 is perfect. RDA does his own thing from the beginning but it's fine, he's very likeable, and believable as a CO anyway.

So originally SG-1 was on Showtime. And Showtime insisted on boobs, which the producers didn't want, but its hard to argue with the network when making a pilot. Luckily, they were able to resist demands gratuitous nudity in subsequent episodes. Then Showtime dropped all of their sci-fi shows and focused entirely on sexy drama. Sci-Fi picked up SG-1, and Sci-fi is basic cable that couldn't show boobs, so that worked out.

This show isn't so much of a continuation but a soft reboot of the movie. They changed certain details to make the show work. Like mentioning that Abydos was the closest planet in the network and that's why it wasn't affected by stellar drift when in the movie they said that it was on the other side of the known universe. Jack makes a comment in a later episode that his name is spelled O'neill with 2 Ls. There's another Col. Jack O'neil who spells it with only 1 and he has no sense of humor. Another detail that is different from the movie that many might not have noticed unless they was watching closely it the name of Jack's son. In the movie his name is Tyler and in the show it is Charlie.

The character played by Kurt Russel in the movie is the same as the one played by Richard Dean Anderson. He knew he couldn't play Kurt Russel so he made his own version of the character. Michael Shanks could do a fair approximation of James Spader's Daniel Jackson.

SG1 is one of the best Sci-fi series ever. Battlestar Galactica 2003 reboot runs a very close 2nd. The first 1/2 of season 1 of SG1 wasn't the best due to character development, but it does improve quickly. I like most Sci-fi including Star Trek (all of them) plus BSG, Farscape and many others. Hint: Try to watch the Sci-fi series Farscape before you finish season 8 of SG1. If you want to get a double/triple giggle, some of the comedy in Farscape is used in season 9 of SG1. The writers/directors of SG1 made fun of Star Trek, Starwars, Farscape, Thunderbirds, and many other TV shows including there own. Only Skaara and (Mr. Bunny Way) were the only actors to reprise their roles in SG1 from the Movie Stargate. Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe are spinoffs of SG1. You should begin to watch Atlantis around mid season 8. SGU towards at the end of season 4 of Atlantis. That way there are no spoilers.

9:11 I see they replaced the wormhole effect for this release. Originally, they used the same sequence from the movie. And they _continued_ using it until almost the end of the series. Even after _Atlantis_ came along with a new sequence (which is what you see here), _SG-1_ continued using the old one for a while. 13:05 And this is one really big thing they retconned. If you recall, in the movie, Catherine says the planet at the other end of the wormhole (Abydos) is "on the other side of the known universe". But here, Abydos is said to be the _closest_ planet in the network to Earth. That network being confined to the Milky Way galaxy. No, "cartouche" is not a made-up word. It's the term (a French word meaning "cartridge", as in firearm ammo) that archaeologists use for a part of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. It is a sequence of characters enclosed in an oval with a line at one end, indicating the name of a pharaoh. If I understand right, the enclosure was meant to protect the pharaoh from evil. Given this meaning, the use for a stargate address seems questionable. But hey, we're talking about a sci-fi show that re-frames mythological figures as aliens, so I suppose they could have explained this away if they'd wanted to.
@WereintheBasement3 ай бұрын
The changing of the wormhole effect kind of threw us off a bit. Also, I thought that's what they said in the movie "other side of the universe" but then I had doubts and started thinking maybe they said Galaxy instead. Lol That's television for ya, we'll give them a pass this time.
@cmlemmus4943 ай бұрын
According to the Stargate wiki, seasons 1-8 used the wormhole effect from the film, but only "Children of the Gods" and "The Fifth Race" played the full 21-second clip. Other episodes used an edited version . Seasons 9 & 10 took the effect from Atlantis and colour-swapped it from green to blue. There are also some audio changes. I haven't found anything stating explicitly if there are different release versions, but my guess is there could be complex copyright issues between the films, TV series, and other media. The film was made by Le Studio Canal+, a French company, and distributed by MGM while the series was made by MGM in-house. It was not common in the 90s for series contracts to include DVD rights, so that release would have had to be negotiated separately. That would be a good time for MGM to strip out remnants of the film to reduce royalties.

Fun fact, the television syndication rights were owned by the Studio (MGM) but the Movie rights are owned by the Production company and producers. The Production company wanted the (MGM) series to fail so that they could make a sequel. But the show didn't fail and created an entire universe and canon of its own which caused a movie sequel to be difficult. So the television series and the movie are not the same.

without spoilers they do a really good job of building on the initial ideas from the film into their own complete science fiction universe. the first season has some awkward episodes, don't give up on it. i would say they really start to be great at episode 10 season one Thor's Hammer. overall they have good long term plotlines and solid filler episodes, and they cover a pretty wide range of character based episodes, different kinds of action plots, medical dramas, i mean like they do a Die Hard at some point on SG: Atlantis, and SG: Universe does some pretty ok Soap Opera stuff that would even get your girlfriends on board. SG-1 is consistently awesome for 10 seasons and even managed to absorb cast members from other shows that got cancelled such as Farscape and FIrefly.

You watched the "Final Cut" Version of The Pilot Children of the Gods which was re-edited and released after the series had ended as a stand-alone movie. They cut out a few scenes and altered the ship that Apophis uses at the end before he goes through the gate, which to the most part does not change the story much, if at all. However they did alter the ending that leads directly into the next episode "The Enemy Within". After Episode 3 "The Enemy Within" the show flounders and is kind of slow until Episode 10 "Thor's Hammer" & Episode 11 "The Torment of Tantalus" and many people drop the show before they get there. Please stick with it the show is a very enjoyable ride once it gets going, Enjoy!

It's really episodes 4-6 that are particularly bad and really to be fair Emancipation and The First Commandment are probably the worst two episodes of the entire show, Broca Divide's not good but at least it's watchable. Episode 7 - Cold Lazarus is probably the first truly good episode of SG-1 {and yes I include the pilot in that statement. Episode 8 and 9 are great - The Nox and Brief Candle. In the second half of Season 1 Cor-Ai is clearly the weakest episode and I'd likely place that ahead of Broca Divide as the third worst episode of the season. - Still compare to TNG Season 1 or DS9 Season 1 and SG-1's four bad episodes {I mean below a 5/10} is a pretty strong start comparatively. I'm not sure TNG or DS9 Season 1 have even four good {7/10 or better} episodes :)

Nice! Glad you enjoyed the first episode, just so you know there's a few episodes in early season 1 that are the weakest in the entire show but towards the back half of the season it picks up in quality and from there on goes from strength to strength. Even though season 1 has some noticeably weak episodes fans are divided on which ones are the worst. There's one I always skip but it has its defenders. There's another that I really like that most fans seem not to, and reactors have been split on. For obvious reasons I won't say which episodes are which. But just be forewarned that there are some episodes that aren't representative of the overall quality of the whole show.

The film Ra is basically humanoid whereas these Goa'uld are snake-like. The film Jaffa did not have pouches carrying larval Gou'uld.
