I had to drop about 10 trees but it was worth it. There are two more left to drop. Both dying as were most of the other ones I had dropped. However, we in this area of MI were only supposed to get 170 Mbps max, but we've downloaded things at just over 300mbps at times. It's worth it when you live in the country imo. Best service we've ever had.

Your area looks like mine, I'm in rural West Virginia, down in a valley wedged between two hills (one hill on the all-important Northern direction) with trees all around.) When I first installed Starlink, I was getting drops every few minutes, which I didn't notice for general internet surfing, but caused buffering on Netflix and the like. However, it's gotten much better as they've launched more satellites. Sticking it on a ten-foot roof mast also did wonders, it didn't seem like it would have put it over most of the treetops, but it must have been just enough to knock the dropoffs down considerably.

I have a suggestion on how to take the worry out of the cable from the Dishy to the house. Have you thought about running the entire system from your garage? That would be your Starlink system. Then run/bury a single strand of fiber optics from the garage to the house in conduit. Yes I know Fiber Optics. Expensive! It's not that pricey. You can purchase single strand fiber optics pre-made in various lengths that would run from your Starlink system in the shed to wherever you needed in the house to a Wifi router to take care of your internet needs in the house and the Starlink system would service your needs in the shed. You would have to purchase the appropriate transponder to covert electrical to light for the optics at each end of the fiber. Surprisingly the whole setup is not that expensive. I did this at my house to get internet to my shop and the whole thing was if I remember correctly under $200.00. I purchased 150 yards of fiber the two transponders off of Amazon and I have been very satisfied with the results. Anyway just a suggestion. thank for the video.

Thanks' for sharing your experience. I am on the waitlist and am looking forward to getting Starlink too. I have some of the same challenges with trees and finding a clear area for the dish on the property. Do you know if the starlink cable can be extended if 100ft isn't long enough? I suppose, I can mount on a shed roof then run an ethernet cable between starlink Dish router and main Network switch in my home if not. Looking forward for a long term review of your installation. Cheers!
@doingstuffonvideo59433 жыл бұрын
Yes. there are POE extenders you can find, if you Google them. They run about $90, a viewer posted below, you need to make sure it is rated at 100 watts, to power the Dishy. You will want to buy POE extender that are water proof and when you buy additional cable make sure you get one rated for outside with UV protection. Your total length of cable from the Dishy to the router will need to be less than 328 feet or it will loose its effectiveness

It looks like you could easily install a wireless bridge between your house and out-building. I did something similar between my house and shop. Cost was around $200. Speed is about 400 Mbps. You are likely to wind up with blown Ethernet ports on your equipment with a cable running between two buildings, due to lightning strikes in the immediate area.

We closed on our property 1 July. It’s 8 acres with half cleared and half wooded. There is already a direct tv dish in the field pointing across the open area. So I was hopeful. I opened the Starlink app yesterday and of course it has to point back towards the house and all the trees! I have to walk halfway across the field to get the trees out of view but then I am 200ft from my house! Not sure what to do now, the other satellite internet providers are terrible!
@doingstuffonvideo59433 жыл бұрын
You can find POE extenders on Google (they run about $90 for an outdoor rated extender) along with additional Ethernet cable. Make sure the cable is rated for outdoor use also. Ethernet cable is only effective up to 300 feet total, so as long as your total run between the dish and WiFi router is under that length you are good. Good Luck!

@doingstuffonvideo59432 жыл бұрын
They make a weather proof power-over-internet (POE) connector to attach two ethernet cables together, they run about $90. You also need to get at least 100' of additional cable to make the run, make sure it is rated for outdoor use. You could bury the cable to span the distance, but that is a lot of digging without a trenching tool, I recommend putting it in conduit if you bury it to add protection. I don't recommend securing it to trees to span the distance, remember trees move and the would put a strain on the cable and eventually break it. I would invest in some type of tall polls in the ground to secure it to. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

@@doingstuffonvideo5943 Thanks for the response. Yeah they're all outdoor rated and you would have to have both sides of the link outside your buildings and able to see each other with decent line of site. I just ran an ethernet line to the exterior of the barn through a soffit and pointed them at each other.
