Sir Keir Starmer has launched a brand new body to deal with Britain's "fragmented and broken" skills training system.
Skills England, which was included in Labour's manifesto, is designed to ensure training provision is aligned with the needs of the economy, as Sky's Sam Coates reports.

Agreed re get rid of agencies. Used to work with a company that supplied temp carer staff. They paid workers £11 an hour - above minimum wage at the time, but with the charge to the employer, it was costing £23 an hour. Would have been cheaper to pay staff £15 an hour and not have temps!

@@wolfhugs2221But the reason the companys have temps is they can treat them like a disposable resource and get rid of them when they like. It's not about saving money, not in that way at least.

Yet again we have a refusal to acknowledge that in many jobs it's not a question of not being able to find skilled workers. Rather it's not being able to find someone who will do the job for sweatshop wages. Make employers pay fairly and a lot of this "reliance" will disappear. This is also responsible for a goodly part of the teacher shortage. Schools steadfastly refuse to employ older, more experienced teachers.

Brits won't work for subsistence wages or live in caravans on farms. Farmworkers should get proper wages and training. Supermarkets need to pay farmers properly. If food prices go up, so be it. Quality needs to go up too. Our grandparents and great grandparents are far better home-grown food than we do now.
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU Ай бұрын
@user-rk9it9hz6g It was done by British people, but Supermarkets now strongly negotiate low prices that outcompete regular greengrocer markets, stifling competition of the big supermarkets and not giving the farmers the ability to raise prices to match inflation. If the system was changed countrywide things might change, but a farmer who pays more and only hires British workers is at a disadvantage compared to all those who keep paying the lower wages.

Like most industrial nations, the problem we have is demographics. An ageing population and a very low birth rate. The basic fact is that a growing economy needs an ever-increasing younger workforce. Younger workers make a net contribution as they generally need less support from the government. These facts are basic maths 101, and no amount of political posturing will change them.

There's a huge difference between the perceived intent of a right winger making arguments about 'Britain first' and other catchphrases that imply dogwhistle to many many people and a nuanced discussion of policy changes the labour government intends to implement to tackle the very real issues we face as a country. Yes, obviously, taking tonnes of migrants with no skills plan, integration plan or intent to do anything but hole them up in hotels their mates own on the taxpayers dime is gonna be bad for the economy, culture and society in general. So the Tory's who literally did nothing but that and other brazenly dishonest actions for years obviously have lost the trust of many.

@shorn9996 one of the first tory policies was austerity, which was an objectively terrible idea that lowered living standards, put hundreds of thousands into poverty, and is responsible for the deaths of thousands. Then for 10 years straight the tories did nothing other than brexit, which was yet another objectively terrible idea, and then spent the next 4 years in a myriad of scandals. So yes, I would say Labour have done a better job in just 2 weeks.

The idea of importing cheap labour, pursued by the establishment, brings in the low paid who cost more in benefits than they pay in taxes, need houses, hospitals, roads etc a net loss to Britain.

We had the best training schemes for all,young and older to good levels of skill ownership. They privatised it made MSC into an agency then closed the agency down as too expensive. Skills training agency was proper instruction and training by the best tradesmen in their field.

Is this to distract us from the thousands of illegal immigrants arriving each week? If the UK doesn't want overseas workers, why is it accepting overseas illegal immigrants? At least overseas WORKERS actually WORK.

We seem to have a problem of those coming from overseas, upskilling themselves here, running up massive student debt and then sodding back off to their home country without paying the loans. Can we sort that problem please?

I never heard of a bank that gives loans to overseas students. Many of the overseas students are super rich btw. If anything they are a good source of income.

The businesses must also take some of the blame for the skill gap. Where are the apprenticeship schemes? I currently work as a tech in a car factory, back when I was young enough to be an apprentice, a favtory this size would have had 4 apprentices for each discipline. Right now we have one electrician apprentice. The businesses want the skills but are unwilling to invest the time and money into making those skills, and thus they are reliant on foreign countries where companies still run apprentice schemes. And the Tories have been complacent in allowing this to happen.
