These aren't real farmers, these are wealthy -landowners- entitled landgrabbers badly cosplaying farmers. Any Farmer worthy of the title is simply too busy Farming, to engage in performative politics like this. It's telling that our "Justice" system simply doesn't apply to wealthy people throwing tantrums, yet concerned citizens protesting against climate collapse are stomped on immediate. In a capitalist economy, the value of a business asset is nearly always related to the return you can make on it. So why is farmland so overvalued compared with the return you can make on it. Because of the market distortion created by these absurd inheritance tax rules. Agricultural land is used as an investment vehicle to avoid inheritance tax, precisely as the Thatcher government intended in 1984. Remove this distortion and the land will be worth what you can make from it. Those farmers that are concerned about keeping the farm in the family shouldn't care. The value of the land is irrelevant if you don't plan on realising it. The only ones who care are those who solely bought it to avoid inheritance tax. Boo hoo. OK BBC, what do you reckon, if you think for one moment that it's just the farmers that are annoyed, you clearly have no grasp on how the population feels. Starmers government is fast becoming despised, their incompetency is beyond belief.

I feel like I'm being talked down to when a journalist feels he needs to explain the meaning of the word 'mitigation' to me. Maybe you people should do your homework before interviewing a buffoon like Clarkson; he pulls the number 96 out of his arse and then you seem to be unable to slap him down with some facts. Tragic.

Yeah all very well if the Farmers were FACTUALLY open about the perks and freebies they get.....become clear on that and the public enthusiasm on their plight would not only dim down somewhat but 100% reverse entirely.........NICE LIFE!.....And the clear clues?.....Start with so many far from farmers that are now farmers.....
@mikecrimlis33662 ай бұрын
List them. Tell us these perks you think exist just for farmers. Even if farmers do make a good living, they deserve it, everything you've ever eaten came from a farmer. You interact with farming 3 times a day. What will you eat when the farms are gone, comrade?

I don’t understand the countryside. Just as much as they don’t want to understand city life that pays for their lifestyle. With cities farms are dead and not the other way round. The amount of processed foods eaten in cities tells you all you need to know.

I seem to recall that this individual gained fame and fortune from the BBC at one stage? In July 2013 the Telegraph reported that he was one of the highest paid BBC presenters in history. He was not so critical of the BBC then. Now if that's not biting the hand that literally fed you, I don't know what is. His appeal to the audience also demonstrated his inability to engage with the issue at hand.
@Ruylopez7782 ай бұрын
No. His appeal to the audience was about the insincerity of the interview. It's not up to farmers to provide a solution to NHS spending. An unbiased interview would have asked him how the farmers feel, and acknowledged how farmers around the world are protesting about how they are being treated. This is the agenda of trying to force farmers out of business. Clarkson was always critical of the BBC and centralised power. The BBC needed him more than he needed them. The public is sick of corruption and government bureaucracy. It's sick of corporations making record profits while people struggle.

Going after people like James Dyson and similar is a good idea, but it simply hasn't had any thought put into it. Some hard working farmers will also get caught who won't be able to pay. What happens to land which is sold by landowners to fund their taxes? We need a way of ensuring that this stays as farmland. It's not just James Dyson and similar who want land, you also need to consider housing developers, the energy industry, and large corporations purchasing land to offset their carbon emissions. Land will remain in demand by government backed industries (it's no secret that the government has its housing and energy targets) none of whom will be producing food. Ordinary farmers will continue to be priced out, or worse - have land compulsory purchased from them. Solar panels and the like should be placed on dead space, such as rooftops, and all new houses should be built with them as standard - not on prime agricultural land. We currently produce around 60% of our domestic food supply. With a decrease in farmland and a rising population, we can't afford to lose any more of our food production. Supply and demand dictates that this will push food prices up in the shops, and make us more reliant on food from other countries - most of which don't have the same regulations. With war in Ukraine, flooding in Spain, further farming turmoil in France, and the regular threat of war, now really isn't a good time to be losing our food security. The more reliant we become on international markets, the more likely we'll see empty shelves in supermarkets. Besides, when there are countries in the world which struggle to produce their own food, any excess worldwide should be going to those countries - we can afford to grow our own and shouldn't be taking it for ourselves.
