This tax is yet another con. Nobody I know ever asked for stuff to be 'overpackaged'. I clearly remember buying fruit and veg in paper bags. The supermarkets pushed plastic packaging on us, most of us did not want it. I think we would all agree that there is too much plastic packaging, but when did this become our, the consumers, fault. We did not choose to have plastic packaging, the supermarkets introduced for ease of handling merchandise and, yet, here we are having to suck up another tax rise because of it. Why are there not incentives to move from plastic packaging. Surely it is not simply because the awful Government we now have is simply looking to further line its pockets?..........

We never used to have plastic wrapping and packaging before the supermarkets destroyed our local high streets (same can be said of the DIY chains). This type of packaging has been allowed to proliferate over decades and it's only now that the government gives a toss (and the previous ones over the last 40 years) when the WEF, Blackrock, etc. have issued proclamations to the western governments to reduce it. The supermarket chains should foot the entire cost of this and not pass it on to customers or British suppliers.

Food packaging isn't under the control of the customer, so it should be the producer's responsibility. Plastics are used in the food industry for their benefit to the producer, and they should be returned to the producer to be disposed of instead of the local councils. In my childhood, I'm 92 now, all soft fruit , especially strawberries used to come in very lightweight wooden punnets. These were made of thin wooden slats , closely woven, and even had neat handles. It was obviously skilled work, and the punnets were used in our home for heaps of things needing short-term storage until eventually they fell to bits and lit next days fire. Why did we turn to plastic at all when the material and skill was there and well proven. I despair at the way Progress has moved us steadily backwards in many ways. Already paper carriers are back, the shopping bag is now a fashion item again and block soap is replacing shower gel. Back to the future, it feels familiar being in the middle of a great .Depression once more with a looming war forever on the horizon. I have lived the full circle.
