Yeah, I remember the old style shops too, flies crawling over everything, people with questionable hygiene handling stuff, coughing and spluttering as they did so. Paper bags that fell apart because of the blood seeping out of the meat. Wonderful places. There are some very good indi butchers, fishmongers and bakery shops these days, but the prices they charge ain't cheap and I doubt many people on minimum wage will be regular customers.

This tax is yet another con. Nobody I know ever asked for stuff to be 'overpackaged'. I clearly remember buying fruit and veg in paper bags. The supermarkets pushed plastic packaging on us, most of us did not want it. I think we would all agree that there is too much plastic packaging, but when did this become our, the consumers, fault. We did not choose to have plastic packaging, the supermarkets introduced for ease of handling merchandise and, yet, here we are having to suck up another tax rise because of it. Why are there not incentives to move from plastic packaging. Surely it is not simply because the awful Government we now have is simply looking to further line its pockets?..........

We never used to have plastic wrapping and packaging before the supermarkets destroyed our local high streets (same can be said of the DIY chains). This type of packaging has been allowed to proliferate over decades and it's only now that the government gives a toss (and the previous ones over the last 40 years) when the WEF, Blackrock, etc. have issued proclamations to the western governments to reduce it. The supermarket chains should foot the entire cost of this and not pass it on to customers or British suppliers.

Food packaging isn't under the control of the customer, so it should be the producer's responsibility. Plastics are used in the food industry for their benefit to the producer, and they should be returned to the producer to be disposed of instead of the local councils. However, this will increase the cost of the product on the shelf, so it's a no-win for the consumer no matter what...

Crazy thing is it is mooted that producing a paper bag costs more energy than a plastic bag. Then how many paper bags are actually reused? Most fall apart after one use. Then of course grease marks and other contaminates make paper difficult (impossible?) to recycle. Give me a eco plastic bag which at least acts as an effective bin liner as a second use.

50 quid is nothing, to most anyway, but once in place will only go one way. This will not help grow the economy.

I went into a supermarket the other day and thought to myself: "50% of this stuff wouldn't have been wrapped in plastic a few years ago." So whose "brilliant" 🤡 idea was that?

That Andy and the pound back in the early 2000 was worth £2.11 compared to today, due to mass inflation.

In my childhood, I'm 92 now, all soft fruit , especially strawberries used to come in very lightweight wooden punnets. These were made of thin wooden slats , closely woven, and even had neat handles. It was obviously skilled work, and the punnets were used in our home for heaps of things needing short-term storage until eventually they fell to bits and lit next days fire. Why did we turn to plastic at all when the material and skill was there and well proven. I despair at the way Progress has moved us steadily backwards in many ways. Already paper carriers are back, the shopping bag is now a fashion item again and block soap is replacing shower gel. Back to the future, it feels familiar being in the middle of a great .Depression once more with a looming war forever on the horizon. I have lived the full circle.

So they don’t want any plastic, but they’re OK destroying millions of trees to get the paper they’ll need for packaging. Absolutely bonkers. So they don’t want any plastic, what will we use to make spectacles and clothing and most consumer products and most of the industrial products and on and on and on… P. S. Did you know glass production has a higher carbon footprint than plastic, so I presume glass is out too?
