So going through all the interviews and events of this book I'm getting pretty familiar with the concepts without having turned a page. I'm now sitting in front of a copy I borrowed from the library and I'm looking forward to it!

The book is quite dry, yet interesting. It rings especially close to home in my case, as I was born and grew up in USSR, but then my country transitioned to democracy and joined EU, so I got real life experience of both - extractive and inclusive (more or less, it's not perfect) systems.

It would help the West if their students and teaching staff are encouraged to get attachments in other countries and their institutions. This helps to open their minds. To understand how China works, its psyche, its history and development, you’d be more circumspect and accurate in your pronouncements if you’ve been there. If you can’t, you could listen to academics, writers and intellectuals who’ve been there and follow closely what’s happening there - try listening, reading Jeffrey Sachs, Kishore Mahbubani, Martin Jacques, etc.

I agree 100%! When I went to China, I was dumbfounded and my whole view of China changed forever. I had been taught in class and through the media about how negative and coercive China is. I was 27 at the time, and I had gone for business. Most of the commercial directors I met were very young too. So, we got to hang out. And I realized the fundamental reason why China blew up: the Chinese people believe in China. That is what foreign stakeholders strategically leave out. The Chinese psyche changed a long time ago. It is not just the authoritarian leadership of the CCP that transformed China; along the way, the people started wanting, working towards, eyeing and believing in economic leadership a long-time ago.
