Martel should be a Hall of Famer, kinda stupid that he isn’t. Shame he got hurt again but he left the business with his overall health in tact and seems to be a clean living, happy guy. Concerning Scott Steiner, this is him mid transformation into Big Poppa Pump, whom you may have heard has the hook up, and wishes for you to shout if your auditory receptors have acceptably understood his statement.

Everything after Starrcade 97 was the beginning of the end. Hogan couldn't lay down clean for anyone and only lost in over booked finishes, wouldn't even let the faces get heat on him without squashing their entire comeback seconds later and mounting 90% of the offense. People actually want this clown to wrestle again is the baffling part of it all.

@MrFreakyFarhan
@MrFreakyFarhan 4 жыл бұрын
@@quickcar5255 yes, because Billy Kidman on his worst day is STILL a 100x better wrestler and worker than Hogan on his best. The ONLY thing Hogan had going for him was personality [admittedly he wasn't a BAD hand in the ring, as proved by his work in Japan; but in no conceivable universe was he ANYTHING like Kidman, or guys like Mike Awesome, DDP, 80s Randy Savage, etc if you wanna compare him with someone closer to his own size and weight].

@MrFreakyFarhan
@MrFreakyFarhan 4 жыл бұрын
@@quickcar5255 what does Awesome being Hogan's cousin have to do with anything? As for Kidman, is that why he was relied upon so much to bolster WCW's mid card in order to get serviceable matches out of people? Is that why he is considered the most successful member of Raven's flock post the group's breakup? Is that why, alongside guys like Guerrero, Benoit, Raven. Malenko, Junventud, Pillman, Mysterio, Jericho, Storm, Jerry Lynn, Tajiri, Michinoku etc he's considered to be a part of the foundation of the modern day cruiserweight/light heavyweight division? Is that why he was a trainer in FCW? And most importantly, is that why he is STILL employed by WWE to this day as a producer, helping to put together shows and helping wrestlers put together matches??

I didn't watch WCW as a kid, but I have recently watched it on the Network, and I was actually really happy when Nick Patrick called the match right down the middle. I too expected him to be on Hogan's side, but it was like vindication for everything that had been going on at the time. Sting wasn't cheated out of a title win, Nick was finally back to be a good ref, and Hogan had FINALLY got his. I thought it was pretty good way of doing things. But of course that's just my opinion. Now don't get me wrong I didn't think thr match itself was good either, but I do think it told a pretty good story.

That La Parka head scissors to Disco over the ropes was the sloppiest head scissors ever, lol. It was cringe inducing because Disco had to take like 2 steps toward La Parka while he was wobbling on the ropes, then Disco had to jump out of the ring. It was almost as sloppy as Macho Man and Yokozuna at the royal rumble when Savage went to pin Yokozuna and yoko kicked out and "threw" Savage over the ropes, lol. That was probably my all time favorite botch, lol because Savage jumped to his feet and sprung himself up over the top rope, and that's what Disco reminded me of here.

Rick Martel loses his career. Sin Cara is still wrestling. But hey, at least Martel looked tough for a night, I'm sure that helped his economic and mental stability for the rest of his life. JFC, all this tough talk BS (which is laughable coming from fans) is why so many wrestlers from previous generations became addicted to liquor, pain pills and steroids. Sorry, I'd rather have Matt Hardy end a match early after an injury than tough his way through it while numbing himself with pills like his brother. Meanwhile 90% of wresting fans would call into work with a bad cold. GTAFOH

For me, I will always know Rick Martel for his work as tag team wrestler; he and Tony Garea were a top tag team in the WWWF/WWF...perfect babyface team that matched up well against heel teams such as the Moon Dogs and Wild Samoans. Go back and watch Martel and Garea at any WWWF/WWF event at MSG (most were broadcast during the early days of the USA Network)...his work in those matches (and the crowd's reaction to his and Garea's work) speaks for itself. ...without question, Martel for HOF.

Martel, booker t and Saturn had a brief 3 way fuede for the TV title. They had some really good matches in wcw around this time.

Rick Martel was a true professional for this. He changed the ending on the fly after blowing out his knee for Booker to win. He was the push that wasn’t supposed to happen.

I belive Starrcade 1997 was the beginning of The downfall of WCW Sting should of went over clean he was the hottest baby face in WCW to be honest around 1998 should of been the time pushing new stars Goldberg DDP Chris Benoit Eddie Gurrrerro Raven Chris Jericho Dean Malenko and Rey Mistero Jr. and Scott Steiner should have been slowly pushing into the main event status to be honest after this point Hulk Hogan worn out his welcome Goldberg and DDP where the only push to that main event status

I had stopped watching WCW around the time when they brought in Hogan, Hall, and Nash. At my school you kinda had to choose up and since i liked WWF more and it was more popular with my friends I just started watching that exclusively. But I do remember that when NWO first arrived they were heels and when sting re-emerged he was a baby face. My dad surprised me with tickets to this event and we went. I hadn't kept up with any of the storylines in the WCW but I had assumed things were somewhat the same. But it seemed like sting was the heel and Hogan was the baby face. At least that was the case in the building that day. I always wondered when that change happened tho

I still remember watching this live and my twelve-year-old self being in total shock when Scott turned on Rick to join the nWo. As someone who grew up as a WCW guy, watching this PPV on the Network brought back memories, but like you said, Brian, there were a few stinkers in there, unfortunately.

speaking of Martel, check out both of the Strike Force vs Hart Foundation 1987 matches - great action from both teams. And the Model vs Hitman in 1992 with Shawn interference. Memorable to me, I was 10 watching the buildup between Mania 8 and Summerslam 1992. Great year for wrestling and Martel was a solid worker all through the first year of Raw - including that battle royal and match with Razor for the IC title -

Axe kick, Brian. Booker doesn't do a scissors kick, he does an axe kick. A scissors kick is when your legs scissor the opponent. Hence the name. XP That's like when people kept calling Chris Daniel's springboard moonsault a "split-legged" moonsault. You kinda need to actually SPLIT your legs to make it one. And yes, I'm overly obsessed with details.

With the Scott Steiner defection, I remember the next night on Nitro he comes out blonde and interferes in a match (can't remember which one) and Schiavone and Heenan were shouting who is that? It's... it's Scott Steiner

@@kevaninthe4135 nah. I disagree. I was in 8th grade when Scott turned heel and joined NWO. Not one of my friends was surprised. Not one. Not even the girls who only watched wrestling a little because of a dad or boyfriend. That was a miscall, possibly by Scott, they just pushed that too hard and too early, so when it finally happened there was no drama. People were just like 'damn, finally!'.
