Complete bullshit. Nobody was paid for this. The homeowner had sticker shock and didn't want to pay the price and did it themselves. I'm a licensed contractor and have seen my share of shoddy work but this is a joke. Either a family member, the homeowner or a homeless man walking by. Nobody recommended someone that would do this. It's another level of bad

It looks like a dungeon? Like somewhere an unruly prisoner from the 1800's would get sent for solitary confinement! I've noticed lots of showers like this over the pond. Give me a sparkling white or light tile with good lighting, something that shows up the grime so it can be cleaned to a good standard and not hidden by dull earthen tones.

I have been doing tile since 1968 sorry to inform you buddy, in early days all tile was installed over fresh mortar float, especially pre thinset, pre backer board. That said this is a horrible tile install. I go back to time when all wall tile was installed over a 1/2 mortar float, & a true craftsman did it right. In the long run inept is inept.
@robertmcbayne65165 жыл бұрын
True dat. My pops was setting tile in late 50's (prethinset) they set over green mortar & troweled on pure portland cement to adhere the tile. Had to soak tile in water for at least 30 minites before installing. We got it easy today ;-)

I am fixing a job right now. Guy set a 12x24 over a paper back kitchen floor that had an 1/8 inch sub floor only nailed every foot or so. Buddy said he had 20 years experience. It helps us as homeowners tally whether work is correctly being done. SMH. I'm watching this in gut-wrenching agony as my family and I are enduring shitty work right now. We've spent 4K for supplies and labour and we had 2 second opinions, one of which quoted 8K just to redo and fix it. Thanks so much for this, it gives SO MUCH insight!

lightningfan1980 You're welcome. And yes, posting bad jobs shows what to look for during the process, day one or two this "contractor" should have been sent packing ! Sorry to hear of your situation...personally I think 8g is too high a price, but the market ( where you are ) dictates it I suppose.

True statement, but as a homeowner, when you really don't know anything about this and you get some fast talking contractor convincing you that he does great work and he's charging you the same price as someone else who does quality work, the homeowner is pretty much the victim of a scammer and not necessarily trying to get cheap labor.

Im a decorative concrete contractor and we have been doing a lot of re-dos this past few years. its always the same scenario. We are called to bid a job, we bid it to do the job correctly and then we never hear from them again because homeowners only care about the lowest price. We get called back a month or two later to see if we can come out and look to see there is anything we can do to fix what they had a cheaper "contractor" do. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is typically true in the trade world. Homeowners always have to learn the hard way

It amazes me that some people think that doing tile is so easy that anyone can do it. When I started doing tile I worked for a contractor for 5 years before I was confident enough to go on my own. People can lie and say they have lots of experience and when they get the job they're way in over their head. Makes us that have been doing it for years look bad. If I don't feel confident I can do a job I won't do it and I'll tell the customer that. I'm not going to do a half assed job and have the customer pay for it.

Your videos are great but they have left me terrified about my upcoming bathroom reno. Tile on tile is the plan. the tiny bathroom (shower and tub in one) is a well-done builder renovation from about 1990, post reunifaction (Berlin, Germany). The tradesmen are generally good in Germany but the tremendous building boom means that many willing but untrained Eastern Europeans have been brought in to fill the gap. After watching your videos, I understand why the previous owner decided not to "fix what ain't broken"... Heaven help me!

you can in fact set over wet mortar. is called sitting neat or in some places green. it's not common and it is not for all types of tile. it's usually the old timers setting marble or natural stone you see doing it that way. I must say I would be interested to know how many gallons of water that floor would hold before it started to drain.

This is about as bad a job as one I was asked to quote on where the customer had hired someone to level the basement floor in order to install tiles on later. The guy did everything wrong you could think of. He didn't apply a polymer to the concrete, he didn't mix the leveler properly (way too thick) and ended up with waves and nothing had been "leveled". Every step you took you'd hear a "crunch, crunch...". The customer had only paid the guy $150 to do the whole basement, what did he expect?

I don’t do tile work, I do custom copper cladding in interior and exterior, but I’m in the same boat. Hate when people call me in for an estimate and then hire someone else who’s cheaper. Well for that cheaper price you get a cheaper product. I take pride in what I do and my trade. I worked 15 long years to make it where I am and to make a name for myself. And to have these hacks come in and give us all a bad name is offensive. I treat everything like it’s my house and go above and beyond in most situations, even past my bid and what was contracted just because it’s the proper way to do things. And the customers greatly appreciate the dedication and honesty. So great to see someone else who care about doing a good job. It’s getting harder and harder to find decent tradesman these days. Especially with this “I don’t wanna work hard, I wanna sit on the cpu or make money playing video games” generation that’s coming up. Hell I hired a helper, lasted 3 days. Complaining about how hard we were working and said his dreams were to make his own strand of weed and open a dispensary.
