I want to thank you both so much. I used to be 415 lbs and 64 pills a day from being so unhealthy. You have given me so much knowledge about how to go back to the old way of living. I make everything homemade and I mean everything. I am now 235 lbs and the rest of my family is loosing weight. today I am only on 2 pills a day now. We still eat the same way, just homemade and home grown. I have also saved a lot of money. God bless you both for teaching me how to better my family.

I'm 20 yrs old and decided I want to live my life as a homesteader. I raise rabbits, chickens, ducks and will hopefully add a milk goat or two later on. I love gardening and the satisfaction that comes with growing them yourself. I watched two of your videos and became immediately addicted to your channel lol. Your so happy and that makes me smile! You make me even more excited to become a full on homesteader!

Starry... thank you for sharing all of this information. I have been following you for a little while now and I enjoy watching your videos. I live in a "small" city in the southern panhandle of Texas. I was raised out in the country though and taught to be self-sufficient. I have in the last year gotten back into canning and dehydrating and such. I am retired now because physically I am not able to do the job that I was doing. I have a local garden not too far from our house where I buy fresh vegetables. Next spring I am going to plant a container garden because our backyard is very small. I will be able to handle the container garden with my physical abilities much better than I can handle a regular garden (like yours and like what I grew up with). I love all of your ideas. My husband just put together plans for a solar oven and I absolutely LOVE the solar dehydrator. When it all falls apart I think my family is ready. My son and his wife live outside of the city so we all may end up out there together... but my food supply is growing daily... and a lot of thanks goes to you for that! You are such an incredible inspiration! Thank you... thank you... thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing..and may God Be with you Both!!

Great advice, Starry! We do a lot of dehydrating and vacuum sealing. Another way we build up what we have in our stores is wait for frozen vegetables to come on sale. We'll buy several bags then dehydrate them. They're easy because they've already been blanched so they go right into the dehydrator, then vacuum sealed, then added to our stores. It's just another way to stock up and save some money while doing it. They're not as good as vegetables from the garden, but they will do in a pinch.

Thank you so much for mentioning Winco!! I have located stores in Ft Worth that would be about 130 to 160 miles one way for us but the trip once a year would be so worth it!! We have been trying to get our food supplies in order and had not locally really found good sources other than Costco in Austin and were just not satisfied with that route. I like that Winco has the different types of pastas like rice and whole wheat in bulk. I recently started buying mason jars for canning and 5 gallon food safe buckets from Uline for our storage and pantry. I got gamma lids for the ones we have as our in the kitchen pantry use out of all the time buckets and the rest we just use the regular lids. store in bags inside buckets etc. oxygen absorbers and so on. We also can our meat and chicken stock soups etc...dried beans into ready to use beans. Makes meal prep much easier. Most of the time we are cooking for 7 adults and 2 (soon to be 3) kids including the farm hands. The only thing is that on the Winco website it doesn't list any of the Texas stores in the pick a store to order ahead online. I am going to call and find out what the scoop is on that. Thanks again for being the amazing inspiration that you and your hubby are!

Winco is one of my favorite stores too -- where else can you bulk buy food at 3 a.m.? Had no idea though that they had an on-line ordering option -- thanks for that tip. The downside to Winco is they do not accept credit card payments -- only cash, debit cards and in-state personal checks, but there is an ATM machine inside the store. Another good choice for wholesale-type buying here in Nevada is at the Smart& Final stores which are restaurant supply stores open to the public. They have 25-lb sacks of triple washed pinto beans at lower prices than Winco. Smart & Final is also a good source for bulk buying packs of Sterno cans, 10 lb bags of lentils, large bottles of all types of cleansers, large size disposable foil pans, big cans of fruits and veggies for dehydrating and the store has the lowest prices on the big bottles of Torini flavored syrups I have found.

You are so right on with watching what you buy. Critical thing is storage; besides 3 and 5 gallon buckets with sealable lids and oxygen absorbers invest in a vacuum sealer and some rolls of bags and some smaller O2 absorbers. Many dry bulk foods will last a long time if they are put into sealed containers and bags with O2 absorbers and kept in a stable temp environment out of sunlight. Another thing I would suggest, besides canning, and packaging is dehydrating. Buy a nice dehydrator. Many fruits and vegetables you raise, forage or buy can be dehydrated and stored for long term storage. The bulk foods, particularly the dehydrated items, can be a good way to start your food pantry until you start setting aside your own. It will be a way for you to have "emergency" supplies until you can raise your own.

If you are prepping its very important to have horded some pinball games. I currently have 6 in good working order. I can play them for free on sunny days via my solar. If you don't have pinball or at least virtual pinball you aren't likely to survive. Hot sauce and vodka is also important. Both very good for you. You are correct to mention Beans as they are good to eat with hot sauce. Let us not forget coffee and water as well . Toss in some guns and your good.

The only thing about buying in bulk at winco is that you really do have to be careful with some of their prices. Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy the boxed stuff over the bulk they have. If you do the math and weight measurements, on some of their bulk products you’re actually paying more.

Many times, I have compared the price of a large sized item to two smaller ones and the two smaller ones, with the same weight or ounces, were less expensive. I learned not to grab the "big, economy size" and I also like not having to open both jars, which results in fresher food.

Great video, as always! My wife and I have been trying to wrap our heads around the whole concept behind Costco and other bulk foods stores for a while now and this video definitely helped to clarify some questions I had! I always wondered why people bought certain things in bulk when it really wasn't a bargain. Your explanation of being very selective and stopping at multiple bulk stores if necessary made a lot of sense! As a fellow blogger and marketer, might I recommend if you have a video in mind that would relate to this one, you could edit in an on-screen link or if you don't want to edit it in you could add the link in the description. That would help to drive traffic to a specific video and would help to keep them on your videos longer. ;-) Keep rocking!

Katzcradul has a couple of great videos on how to can cheese, cream cheese, and butter. The USDA does not recommend canning butter or cheese because of safety concerns, but...canning butter has been done successfully for generations. I'm an avid canner, but I've never canned butter. I'm going to give it a try using katzcradul as my teaching tool. Have a great day, Starry. Love your videos! Wish I could move to Idaho and have you for a neighbor. 😊 That would be awesome. We do not intend on feeding the public so we eat what we store, store what we ear and never tell anyone we are making preparations for when SHTF here indise of the USA. One thing that needs to be going after the start of the 2nd Great Depression are two things here. Running fresh water and the flow of electricity for the homes to keep food fresh. These two are most important to keep the masses inside and not out looking for my food.

I've worked in four natural food stores and in one did bulk bins. My problem with bulk grain products is the Indian meal moth. They're already in the food, as life is alive everywhere. You buy rice, they reduce it to powder and you might open a cupboard and have moths fly out. I have a Bugzooka, and it come in handy. I find that wholesale and dented canned goods are a better buy and keep along with distilled water. I hate wasting money. And don't forget to sprout lentils and beans.

I absolutely love your videos. my husband and I started researching on how to be more conservative and also are in the process of fulfilling goals to become debt free. it's just not enough for us because we too want to be self sufficient. we have a little over two acres. we purchased two chickens three ducks and two geese over the last six months...I feel so small compared to you and your husband's life. I envy you both. and to top it off your Christians as well. please keep the videos coming. we so enjoy them. pray for us we are thinking of selling and moving to begin our new life. we are very nervous.. all in a nutshell, Mindy we love you guys!!

Wow, you two bought a lot of food! I was starting to wonder if you took the truck. Sprig didn't have to ride home on the roof did he? With all of the ways to save money that you showed I couldn't help but think of those talk radio guys that advertise the prepper foods and how expensive they probably are. I really should focus more on building up a pantry like yours.

+Chip Wright Sprig had to stay home..haha no room for the doggies! And yes those prepper foods...they serve a purpose...but are very very expensive for most people. So having a back up plan like we do really does help!!

Hello Starry. I am glad that I have recently discovered you and MR. Hilder on KZbin. You have many great lessons that I'm enjoying very much! One thing that keeps coming to mind though is, what do you guys do with your trash? I understand that you compost food scraps but what about the things that don't compost? Recycle? If you've already mentioned this in a video I'm sorry for the redundancy, but if not this would be a great video opportunity. Thank you and keep up the good work. God bless!

Starry, I want to thank you and your husband for these great videos. They are some of the best, most informative, I've seen. Love that yall are Christians as well. Yes, I said "y'all", I'm from Alabama...ROLL TIDE! Anyway, and forgive me if you have covered this in another video, but I like the idea of purchasing (butter, beans, cheese etc) from other farmers, even trading goods to save cash. Thanks again for your videos as I am researching information prior to my own plunge into off grid living. I am a blacksmith and have some experience with holistic farming so you are covering some material that is new to me.

Starry have you thought about vacuum packing some of your bulk items for storage? I know something will last a long time in the absent of air. For longer shelf-life.

We don't have anything like Costco where we live so we tend to buy in bulk when things are on special offer. I couldn't agree more about making your own granola and muesli not only is it loads cheaper but tastes so much better in my mind.
