Unfortunately we haven't been able to record a CD in years. It is a very expensive process... which is one reason why we've been putting up the videos of our live performances.

Sousa explained to the press that the three themes of the final trio were meant to typify the three sections of the United States. The broad melody, or main theme, represents the North. The South is represented by the famous piccolo obbligato, and the West by the bold countermelody of the trombones.

One, the song is awesome! Two, the Trombones are playing too loud, but at least the people now know why they stand up. Three, the song is WAAAAAYY too fast. But otherwise, it was awesome.
@Beviedev10 жыл бұрын
It's standard tempo at points, it stays roughly around 120bpm (But yes it does get faster than it should but not a whole bunch) which is how it's supposed to be played in a concert setting. Since they aren't marching I'd say it's a perfectly acceptable speed, albeit if the band can handle it.
@Beviedev10 жыл бұрын

It would be funny if after the intro to the song, the conductor just had them play a note for four beats and end it. Turn to the audience, expect applause, get nothing ,and ask, "Was that too fast? Alright fine, we'll play it at MACH 2. You should be able to hear it at that speed." And then proceed to play it at this speed.

Aside from the Piccolo players standing for the solo is there any acoustic pro or con to where the piccolo players are set in the orchestra? I notice most concerts especially military bands have the piccolo players up front for the piccolo solo....Great video and keep up the good work!!
@BandofFlight4 жыл бұрын
Good topic/question. Other than custom borrowed from the orchestral world, where the violins generally being softer and carrying the melody most of the time, also coupled with the fact that they are more capable of intricate playing than the brasses. In the concert band, the role of the violins is played by the flutes and clarinets which have the same pros/cons. While a piccolo would have no problem cutting through an ensemble, and technically could be placed at the back, a piccolo is usually a doubler chair with flute, so it would be very strange to send a flautist to the back row.
@stephencannon31404 жыл бұрын
Thanks, your the experts. That’s why I went into aviation instead of music. Off topic....you want to see a awesome military band....KZbin US Navy Band “Frosty the Snowman”......what a clip......especially the drummer at “stop”. .....Sorry, that might be somewhat biased but oh well.... This very march is written by John Philip Sousa who was a marine himself! The tempo is also way after than it should be. The tempo should be at 120. Excellent playing but I prefer the marines. Oorah

why so fast?
@cathyparr682710 жыл бұрын
I think I know what happened. The conductor starts out at a good tempo. The audience starts clapping and they get faster. This probably threw off the band. In a later view of him, the conductor seems to be struggling to get back to his tempo. That happens sometimes.

Wow. This is fast compared to most other performances I've heard (which probably play it too fast anyways) at least until after the solo. Also, two piccollos? Isn't that really risky as far as being in tune is concered? I remember my high school music teacher joking "If there are two piccollos, shoot one." Still, an enjoyable performance.

I don’t believe it is appropriate for an officer in the armed forces to call upon a deity in public. After all, I said in 1754: “When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not care to support it, so that its professors are obliged to call for the help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one."

Far too fast for my taste, and I missed the piccolo parts not played while the soloists approached the front and returned to their seats. The attention to the trombone's counterpoint was nice, but it overpowered the melody. This is NOT my favourite.
