It didn't occur to me until yesterday that this song is literally about the BMI tech in the Starset universe, how the BMI's "promise" to give the individual everything they ever wanted via synthetic pleasures. And another thing is the dynamic symbol of this track evechanging and swaying in the position of a pendulum to finally reaching its zenith in the shape of a heart lining up all three circles. The BMI's shape is visually represented by three circles lined up. This visual representation in this dynamic symbol makes me think the BMI is on the surface: hypnosis/suggestion but really at its core is pure subjugation and manipulation of the "heart" or in this case an individual's mind. Late night epiphanies are wonderful.

I thought of the lotus eater trope as soon as I heard this song for the first time, which is basically what you described. Not too familiar with the lore this band puts out, but it looks like I was almost right on the money. Maybe I should look at the lore more (I know a little for Transmissions, but not so much this album).

In my opinion the "Perfect Machine" isnt an object, its YOU. Or rather, the idea of having to shell your true feelings and emotions from the one you love. Lying to yourself and faking your emotions enough to convince both you and your partner into believing that you're both happy. In my eyes that is what makes you the PERFECT MACHINE. "I don't want you to see who I truly am, so here, pour your heart into this. It's not the real me, but we can PRETEND that it is so that we can both be happy" Sound like anyone?

Beyond the sound of their incredible music, I really love that Starset's songs is because they each feel like they have a real story behind them, one that really makes you think. A sort of hidden message. I think the "perfect machine" the song talks about is some sort of technology that lets people see what they want to see, either a virtual reality device of some kind, mind control, or a mixture of both. It lets people live out their deepest fantasies, hence the line "I'm a liar without deceiving" but when we get to the line "I will choose it to protect you from me, I will never let you see what's beneath". We realize the machine is just keeping the people under its control to keep them from the truth and the harsh realities of the world they live in. Beautiful song. :)
@chevaliedelareverie5 жыл бұрын
I agree! That's why I love their music. It's not just superficial and catchy, it has real meaning. I think this song is about how we put up walls and hide our true self, and try to be what we think people want. But by trying to change we lose ourselves. It almost sounds like he is the voice of a possessive lover. He will do whatever it takes to win his love, but it's not really him . . . and in the end it hurts them both. It begins to sound like he realizes the damage it causes them, and so do they. "We were both pretending." Then he starts to question it all. "I suppose so, but what do I know?" So the perfect machine isn't perfect afterall and keeps people apart.
@chevaliedelareverie5 жыл бұрын
I like your interpretation. It fits well with the dystopian society Starset illustrates in their music/videos/etc. They're all brainwashed/controlled/subjugated, blinded to their reality.

Kyle Lincoln You’re more right than you know. The "perfect machine" is called the Brain Machine Interface, or BMI for short. It is a "third generation neural lace", three dots in your left temple that can show you anything and everything you want to see. I’m a bit of an expert on the concept of DIVISIONS. Go see my Genius.com annotations for the album and it’s tracks if you don’t believe me.

The best part about this some for me that I don’t see anyone talking about even so long after it’s release is the escalation. The way the lyrics are performed and the way the music itself evolves throughout the song. Turn it up, sit back and listen to it’s growth. It becomes an irresistible chorus that grows in intensity and majesty. Starset is a band of dedicated and obviously invested people. Every song has soul and purpose, it is masterful.

A gorgeous song (the lyrics I can never get out of my head) and my favorite song from the DIVISIONS album. The symbol is really cute too - I'd love that on a shirt or sweater.

So. Much. Emotion. Seldom have I experienced a vocalist transport this kind of raw and pure emotion with his voice. 🖤

This specific song hits much different than the others, I guess it’s just the lyrics I relate to or that THIS BAND IS THE BEST I’VE HEARD.

A new friend of mine from a Meetup told me about this group. I love the strategy to this sound. Hard rocking metal with symphonic instruments as an enhancer.

These graphics make me want to watch the videos and not just have the music in the background. Wait.. Can I play this through my TV? Edit: Yes. Yes I can. And yes, yes it is awesome.

I wish there was an acoustic version of this. The violin in this is too beautiful to be covered up by those heavy guitar riffs, though this is still one of my top favorites.

This song is just... amazing. I really feel like it's a robot or machine that's thinking all this, to imitate something to be able to manipulate the person. Ugh just love this song so much. Great work!

"First we abdicated our minds to pieces of silicon that promised to expand our views of the world, problem is that what came with them was a false idea, a malignant eidolon that became one of the keys to our undoing. Then while our minds were scrambled and our wills were undone thread by thread we abdicated our hearts to synthetic loves and synthetic chemicals. Finally after we had tossed so much of ourselves aside was the truth revealed. We were so dependent upon what was supposed to be the tools of our ascension that we failed to realize that we had become slaves in all but name." -Unknown

I wasn't here when this album released, but i still want to give respects for being 5 years old now (At least the youtube release~). This album, and specifically this song, introduced me to Starset, and i couldn't be more grateful for it. Thank you for all these songs, Starset. I wouldn't imagine life now without them. Hope many more to come! ❤

The sheer complexity and beauty of the orchestration and arrangement of every Starset song is incredible. There are so many sonic layers to this song, in particular, that come together so perfectly. It's truly masterful.
