And on top of that, you even collect all these amazing shots showing exactly what you're describing. @teaser60892 сағат бұрын
I hope the catching pins work in the current state, but it will require multiple re-entry testing cause you never know if the material weakens with each new re-entry event. If it does not workout I really think having a retractable setup really is the best option

Maybe they could add rubber rollers to the chopsticks, so during a catch they'd roll along the ship rather than scraping it, like they put tyres on the sides of ships to stop damage when they move alongside a dock?
@just2it8743 сағат бұрын
Rubber is problematic during start and landing, as even with the arms stretched out as far as possible, the heat of the launch/landing would probably damage the rubber. Yet the idea of rollers is great.. good thinking.
@karlwest4373 сағат бұрын
@just2it874 they could put them behind some protective covers and only retract the covers during the last few seconds of a catch

The guys working on the lunar lander at @15:07 are wearing their masks below their noses and the guy right behind the lander appears to be wearing no mask at all. So you see, the whole concept of "we need to take every precaution to keep these things sterile so we don't contaminate the lunar environment with biology from Earth" is pretty much a joke. This is the same behavior we saw for a couple of years during covid, people walking around wearing masks over thick beards so the air just flows around them, rubbing their mouths and noses with their hands under the mask - then touching every keyboard and doorknob around them. I mean seriously, either wear the protective masks correctly or don't wear them at all... pretending doesn't work. (Edit: just noticed the guy working on the lunar rover at @17:33 also has his big fat nose sticking out over his mask, rendering it useless)
@hajibada7152 сағат бұрын
well the 15:07 masks are only to prevent the facial hair from falling anywhere, they serve no other purpose, hence why the guy with no facial hair behind the lander isnt wearing one
@Supraboyes2 сағат бұрын
Erm, they are actually just hair nets, the guy you see not wearing one is because he doesn't have a beard.

The Mars sample return prices seem so insane. But it will be alot different and interesting in the future when there is some standardization and commercially available vehicles/robots going to the moon and then Mars, just like we have with the launch rockets now. Theres no real assembly line for anything that lands on another planet/moon lol. Im really excited for these moon landings right now, i hope Firefly does well. These terrestial missions are what we are doing alot of this for! Its not all going to be more Starlink satellites lol

Wouldn't it be more practical to install a recovery chute on the hot-staging ring rather than have it get mangled by water impact?
@caribbeanman3379Сағат бұрын
You know, if we get enough of these powerful rocket engines installed horizontally, fixed to the ground and all facing the same direction, it should be possible to run them long enough to speed up earth's rotation just enough so that a year would equal exactly 364 days. Then we could have a perfect calendar consisting of 13 months, each of which is consistently 28 days. One calendar that remains valid for every year going forward!

I doubt those non- structural external catch pins will survive exposure during reentry. SPACEX will likely need retractable ship catching points/arms. Also how are they going to prevent the stainless steel from being badly warped again in the areas they removed heat tiles? They need to solve that problem or ships can't be reused.
