@@DeSmith-o4bCareful; SpaceX as we know it today was essentially intentionally jump-started by NASA via the innovative COTS/Commercial Orbital Transportation System Public-Private Partnership program in 2005. In fact, NASA picked two innovative space startups- neither of which had built or flown a single thing at that time- for the program initially: SpaceX and Kistler. Kistler failed almost immediately (within a year); NASA gave them one more chance, but they still weren’t able to make it, so they cut them off, and picked another company. NASA then repeated the process with human transportation - leading to Crew Dragon and Starliner- again, proving the worth of never betting on just one company, but trying to jump-start an industry instead. And of course more recently, NASA has again duplicated the process with Human Lunar Landing Systems - with both SpaceX/Starship, and Blue Origin. So we’re only here because of deliberate NASA policy over the last twenty years, ok? - Dave Huntsman

13:59 Congratulations, you win the CKOB Radio Max-Q Prize, tell him what he's won Johnny, "Well Kev, he's won exactly nothing at all but this prize is auspicious because it's only ever given once and this is it!" (BIG CROWD CHEER goes up) "And so, Marcus House, today you are being presented the Max-Q Award of Excellence for being the first human in all of history with an audience more than a dozen people to ever say the word 'Max-Q' and just leave it there. You, Marcus, have shown us the way, you beknighted Sir have proven to the world that one must NOT NECESSARILY ***ALWAYS*** follow that word with, 'that point when the ship is under maximum dynamic stress', congratulations once again Sir!" How the holy-f do people think "max-q" needs an explanation when no one ever says what the *dynamic* in "maximum dynamic pressure" means (which is a far more tricky concept than the meaning of a cute word). Anyway, seriously there Mr. House, I've never heard anyone just use it and move on. I am fonching for the day when I watch a launch and someone says "that was max-q" and just keeps on with telling us something we might not already know...
@geekswithfeet91374 сағат бұрын
Nah Scott Manley also uses the word naked quite often, doesn’t assume his audience needs an explanation everytime. But nothing is as bad as watching a fusion video that feel the need to explain fusion and fission from scratch….. every…. Single ….. time.

Why does a ground--based air separation system need FAA approval?
@MtnXplorr5 сағат бұрын
Because it’s being built at the launch site. Same thing happens when an airport wants to install a new fuel depot. They could build it offsite and pipe or truck it in. But that would add cost & complexity. Plus they would still need to work with state and local governments to meet their building codes and environmental impact requirements.
@gerardwalker21595 сағат бұрын
Good question, good answer. Thanks you two.
@FerociousPancake8882 сағат бұрын
I used to work on towers. I would assume that the air separator will be pretty tall. Generally if you install structures tall enough, the FAA gets involved and requires marking lights at certain heights and also a beacon light at the top. This is so low flying aircraft can see the hazard at night. The requirements are way tighter if you’re close to or on airport grounds and perhaps they do the same for spaceports like starbase.

No, it can light all of them, but cant light just 1 or 2 because the center of thrust is offset from the center of mass, so it will spin out of control. But if all 3 were lit, it would stay stable

Common knowledge: "You can't test fire vacuum level engines at sea level. The bell will get unstable and rip apart." Raptors: "I didn't know that" (Note that the sea level raptors have mach diamonds with a smaller diameter than the engine bell itself, so they are already overexpanding. The vacuum level raptors must be expanding a lot!)

A little surprising that the tube splice welds on chopsticks have been determined less than 100% strength, requiring reinforcement. Something didn't go quite right there. Apparently they rolled those tubes out of something like A514 steel to reduce mass, no good reason I can think of why butt welds wouldn't do the job without those reinforcements which appear not part of original plan.
