This is exactly the type of game I've been hoping for, for a long time now. Maybe some random behavior patterns?, to make them seem more real, even when the player is not controlling the character. Sims wander

I'm a huge Star Trek fan and this is every Trekys dream come true! Is there anything we can do to support him so it comes to fruition? i.e., Kickstarter, volunteer to help out with non-programming stuff? I'm very impressed with his game developing philosophy and love this!

WOW! Dan is brilliant! LOVE the Stage 9 TNG Enterprise D and the Orville simulators. Looking forward to Starship Sim, which I've dloaded in Steam. I was playing with the electrical panels and plunged a whole deck in darkness.... . VERY cool! Only the Morale Officer should be allowed to trigger chair races otherwise it will be pandemonium.... . Captain: Engineering! I need more power for the shields! Engineering: Sorry captain, everyone is participating in a chair race. :D Will we see the Vorlons? ;) Good for you for remaining an indie dev! A monumental endeavour! GodSpeed!

Absolutely love this! as cringey as it sounds, this to me is a real 'MetaVerse', a world for those interested in this world having a facility to interact with like minded people. Imagine logging into this to meet your friends at the bar, taking a roll on the ship that isn't the 'lead' but an important cog in the wheel of production.

I just wonder why is it always a bar in contemporary sci-fi multiplayer games? The possibilities are limitless in regards of futuristic rec rooms and lounges, especially if the game has a specific focus, like exploration -science.

A fun experiment to see would be ALL crew positions filled by a player. Could the server handle that many folks, could they actually keep the ship going, etc?

Have tried this with 7 other players and it worked very nicely, when you host a game you can determine how many other players you want.

Tried this in Drew Wagars stream a bit back, Drew was captain assigning roles & tasks, i was given the role of pilot/helmsman. Dan was Navigator sending the scanned and plotted routes to my console with others being assigned the XO, engineer etc. It was fun and all worked nicely, we coukd use the in game text system to send orders and acknowledge them reporting back when under way etc. It all felt very invokved with everyone taking part, very sci-fi show feeling...great fun.

I'm loving this! It just seems weird that the main lift doesn't go up to the bridge deck, but you have to access the bridge by going through the lounge.

No. Elite is Elite. Elite , Frontier Elite 2, Enccounters, Dangerous are all about the freelancer individual pilots called Commanders. A crewed (quasi) capital ship with different manned stations is not Elite. Both of these games are very nice, but don't forget Starship Simulator's features are still in the "ideas on paper" phase. Not mentioning that ED is an MMORPG, Starship Sim is not, it will be a co-op multiplayer game.

@@Profane_Pagan I should have been more clear but...what I meant was perhaps starship simulator will have exploration features such as those braben mentioned in ED's kirkstarter and the early years 2014 to 2015.

Thanks for the detail on the how the game part will work (as opposed to the tech demo part). I profess some skepticism as to how duties that a bot can do would be interesting duties for a player, and how such procedurally generated missions would stay interesting (look at how interesting Elite: Dangerous procedurally-generated missions are!) but I am rooting for Dan and hope that this will be a fun game when it comes out.

I would love it if as the head of a department, you assign a task, or an onerous task gets assigned to the department… you hear the NPCs “oh no, I was going to have a long lunch today”, “not again, why do we get the crap jobs?” Hahahaha

Great interview and proof of concept. But I have to go O/T on this. Your video just shows that FDev needs to get into the current level of game engines and give up it's proprietary, in-house Cobra engine for Elite Dangerous. Be that as it may. Would love to see this game in beta as I bet it will run smoother than say Star Citizen, with so much graphic fidelity. And of course, Elite.

Just tried the demo and was blown away. After playing several starship games incl. eveonline THIS one is the one I was looking for. I'm fully in to the mindset of Dan with having a complete(!) ship and its functions. Then we can talk about brawl, exploration and so on. A part which was painfully missing for me on many other star ship games. I hope this will be awesome, I'm in it. Go for it!
