On Wednesday, May 5, 2021, Starship serial number 15 (SN15) successfully completed SpaceX’s fifth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas.
Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN15 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 km in altitude. SN15 performed a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.
The Starship prototype descended under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps were actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enabled precise landing at the intended location. SN15’s Raptor engines reignited as the vehicle performed the landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down for a nominal landing on the pad.
These test flights of Starship are all about improving our understanding and development of a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration interplanetary flights, and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.
Congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on SN15’s successful flight and landing!

The fact that we went from the Falcon 1 to this is just astounding. Less than 2 decades and SpaceX has went from a tiny little startup to a giant in the aerospace industry, paving the way for reusable rockets, and restoring US capability to launch humans to the ISS. Looking back at the failed Falcon 1 launches in the mid 2000s, no one would’ve guessed that this would be where SpaceX would be in 15 years. Super excited to see orbital starship tests!

Well done Space X. Incredible achievements in so many areas in such a short time. I'm 75 now. When I was born in Jan 1946, the Air Force was just a bunch of WW II aircraft with a few prototypes of emerging gets. But the progress of that time was breathtaking. In early 1950's my father (a B-17 pilot in WW II) was assigned to Sedalia AFB, MO. The base had been closed after WW II and so it was not in good condition. There wasn't any base housing so we rented a dilapidated farm house just off the main gate (which looked more like an outhouse than a main gate). There were only old WW II barracks that were abandoned and only heated with coal. The base only had old B-25 medium bombers. The only entertainment on the base was a barrack that was used as a movie theater. The theater was a sheet used for a screen, metal folding chairs, a 16 mm projector that only showed WW II gun camera movies with no sound. We had to bring our own popcorn. It was bleak when we first arrived. But then massive construction began. The old wooden barracks were torn down and new buildings and housing were being constructed. I clearly remember the day that the old WW II B-25's departed and the new B-47's arrived. Everyone at the base was lined up on the flight line to watch the old be replaced by the new. When I first saw the B-47, it was like an alien spaceship landing. We had never seen anything that advanced and beautiful. Few people know that the early B-47s didn't have any defensive weapons because it was faster that any fighter at the time. It could literally outrun any enemy threat. That changed later when a radar controlled tail gun was added. My dad flew the B-47 and he told me it flew more like a fighter than a bomber. Anyway later Sedalia AFB was renamed Whiteman AFB and it is not the home of the B-2 steal bomber. Like I said, I'm 75 now, but I remember when it was Sedalia AFB with old B-25's and the only entertainment was watching old WW II gun camera films on a bed sheet with no sound in old wooden barracks on a bed sheet heated with coal. And now it is the premier base for the most advanced stealth aircraft on the face of the earth. I'm glad I have had to opportunity to see the miracle changes in technologies.

You know, nobody ever said it can not be done. People who actually know about this stuff just mentioned something obvious: that it won't be done as quickly, easily and cheaply and thoroughly as everybody thinks. Already list of delays, overruns and skips is mounting on SpaceX: F9H cross feed, Dragon powered landing, first flight to ISS and this debacle of blowing pressure tanks and pretending this is rocket engineering. Apparently, people who built Shuttle, Voyagers, Vikings, Energya and Buran didn't know anything about development.

@@kiwidevil9693 It *was* an American achievement, but it need not be (nor do we Americans [most of us, anyway] want it to be) an *exclusively* American achievement. SpaceX builds (mostly) reusable launch vehicles, cargo capsules, crew capsules, and fully-reusable spaceships (Starship and its soon-to-fly reusable booster), but more than this flight hardware will be needed to get to and settle Mars (and settle the Moon, too). Chicken Choker Charlie, *you* could start a company--it need not be a large one, and it would grow over time--to produce the life support, safety, and/or other equipment the Moon and Mars settlers will need, including pre-packaged food and food-growing apparatus (hydroponic or aeroponic agriculture units, etc.).

Notice that SpaceX’s fully reusable, affordable Starship replaces & obviates Nasa’s lunar landers, gateway, SLS & Orion... @Vaderstamps

@@wrwhiteal Nasa's reaction to the lose of the shuttle program was to provide competitive seed money for private launch providers. So we weren't just sitting around for the last decade paying Russia for rides to the ISS. Elon Musk would be the first to credit NASA with the survival of his company in 2004(?). Their last ditch success on their 4th launch won them a NASA contract. I do get what you're saying though. There has always been a lot of graft and corruption in the 'pay plus' contract system they used. Pay plus means the contractor gets paid a certain amount plus whatever they need for cost overruns. Guaranteed delays and overruns, basically.
@wrwhiteal
@wrwhiteal 3 жыл бұрын
@@Vaderstamps the ‘cost plus’ arrangements were/are necessary because of NASA incompetence, meddling, interference, micro-management... just like any contractor working for an incompetent meddling idiot.. you have to protect yourself.. You seem to give NASA credit for wasting $500+ billion OF OUR MONEY on 50 years of dead end unsustainable manned space boondoggles... then paying SpaceX to do what NASA itself is incompetent/incapable of doing.. resupplying & crewing our own space station.. No, NASA is HOPELESS.. it needs to be downsized or eliminated.. get the dead wood centers/HQ out of the way..replaced with taxpayer funded x-prizes for American enterprises accomplishing US space goals like Lunar Colonies, Americans to Mars, trips to asteroids, etc..

you mean his engineers all elon did was fund the people working on this. praise the team and workers not the guy who profited off slave mining.
@thatganglecreature2212
@thatganglecreature2212 3 жыл бұрын
@@zerotheliger Elon is an engineer as well, and if it was just about other engineers then other companies would be doing similar things. But only SpaceX is sending astronauts to the ISS, doing consistent launches with reusable/landing rockets like Falcon 9, and innovating in a crazy manner like Starship. And I'll just ignore your "slave mining" idiocy.

@gonzapato1006 3 жыл бұрын
@@thatganglecreature2212 Elon definitely has a great ability to hire the right people, and I'm sure he designed a lot of things and helped solving problems etc, but we also need to praise the Starship team which is doing an awesome job.
@thatganglecreature2212
@thatganglecreature2212 3 жыл бұрын
@@gonzapato1006 Well yeah, obviously - they all deserve praise. The "hater" mentality that Elon isn't a large factor in these achievements is just incorrect, though.

I'm old enough to remember the Space Shuttle flights being a mere footnote on the evening news back in the 80's - fast forward to 2021, and you can get full coverage of testing, rocket launches, satellite deployments and crewed missions straight to your computer/phone/tv. This is the next chapter of space flight unfolding right in front of our eyes, and long may it continue. Space X, we salute you!
