2022 and there are still people not getting the satire, saying the regime depicted is not fascist. lol In Germany we discuss fascism A LOT in school. A lot means theres not one year without it being a topic in some class. That is of course, to prevent it from becoming a thing in Germany ever again. The depicted, extremely militarized system in this movie is definitely fascism. Maybe a variation, but still fascism.

When you take a book, misinterpret it and make a satire out of it; but the production is so damn good that everyone enjoys it unironically and at face value.
@andersonsmith9792 жыл бұрын
The movie's "better" than the book, anyway. Too much of the book is centered on discussions of the foundations of the future society in which the book is set. Entirely too much talking about and explaining why that society is SO much better than previous civilizations. The confidence with which the one character states his beliefs leaves me wondering if he's ever had a chance to question those beliefs or even has the ability/opportunity to research such questions. There's no real explanation HOW this future society got to where it is. I found that deeply unsatisfying. If your future world is so obviously better, the path getting there should make for interesting reading. Obviously not. The mere fact that a previous society suffered a collapse and you're hasn't, (Yet.), doesn't prove the correctness of your dogmatic beliefs or that the current society is best. Awkwardly, no one can decide whether the "philosophy" of this future society represented Heinlein's views or whether he was holding up this sort of thinking to criticism. The movie spends some time placing the action within this alternate future but doesn't get as bogged down in the details. A movie purportedly about a futuristic space war with alien spiders could not have spent half it's run time on some crippled old vet expounding on the virtues of serving the state.
@autokrator_2 жыл бұрын
@@andersonsmith979 Sure, the book might not be everyone’s cup of tea but what you describe as “pointless and boring philosophizing” is actually quite poignant to most readers and is why the book ended up on the USMC’s Commandant’s Reading List where so many other works of military fiction did not.

Phillip J. Benson Alright men, we got a planet full of swarming aliens, so we'll run in mass numbers of soldiers and choke the planet with our bodies! What's that private? Use a nova-bomb? NEVER! We want to show off our power! (No really, they got cocky and attacked the planet, then they couldn't nova-bomb it because there were survivors stranded there.)
@jsheikg10 жыл бұрын
Minesniper07 Heinlein's book was far better. The Mobil Infantry actually was mobile and was prone to throwing nukes from their backpack mounted "Y" racks. The fact is, just like trying to portray tank warfare accurately, you just can't stuff in onto a cinema screen. Being a Heinlein fan I was really disappointed in Verhoeven's hashing of the book. Heinlein was also anti-war so there was no excuse for that. In the book the military had seized the democratic "franchise" for itself because the civilian leadership world-wide just kept on making wars for what the military judged to be specious causes. Thus "Service means Citizenship" meant that all who were involved in making war knew its true price first hand.
@Minesniper0710 жыл бұрын
jsheikg I associate this movie adaptation of a book to that of Jurassic Park, the movie was still great and it was awesome to see it brought to life on the big screen, but it pales in comparison to the book, where so much was done better.

My first Sci-fi movie (watch it when I was 5, yeah kinda weird isnt it) and still one of my favourite sci-fi movie and movie in general, the sound track is just epic, especially when the mobile infantry charge into battle, makes me want to punch everything in the room.

***** In the book that the movie is based on the mobile infantry were exo-suits so they were like tanks but in the movie they did not use that which would have been epic looking
@jeremybolt593110 жыл бұрын
fastold if you watch starship troopers:invasion, they wear the exo suits, its a pity Hollywood couldn't get that right. oh well leave it to japan to do justice with this dying franchise, hope they make for movies like invasion, cause it was better then all 3 of those movies combined.

***** In the starship troopers universe, the bugs are strong enough to rip through armor, even in the books where infantry men are walking tanks, once the bugs got close enough to use their jaws, they'd tear straight through. Tanks would have less mobility on bug planets and would be far to vulnerable to flanking, and tunneling. Most tanks are not designed to be assaulted from below, and when fighting an enemy of burrowing insects which can make you fall into a pit trap, it's a death sentence. Simply, In the Starship Troopers universe, Tanks are a waste of resources when you could instead invest in more aircraft, weapon platforms and - if it was in the books anyway - Mobile Infantry Power Suits to make each soldier far more effective. In the book, they specifically tell troopers, that if they are going to die, to get the suit returned at the least. Even if mortally wounded, losing the suit hurts more than the man inside.
