Thank you so much for this series of videos. Learnt more about my Sub37 from these three than all the others on KZbin combined!

Excellent walk through! You really help break down how to use the Sub 37 Moog. Much easier now to understand than the manuals and documentation for sure. I am amazed at what this bad boy can do.

You're welcome! The documentation from Moog is pretty good but leaves a lot of gaps for those new to analog setups and oscillators. The good news is learning the Sub 37 and Moog transfers to other synthesizers as my Native Instruments Kontrol S49 has dials for oscillators and filters as well.

My subsequent CV will arrive Thursday and I’ve taken the day off so I’ll be sure to be home. I had a little fatty six years ago. I sold it. Yes it sounded great but it was just so elementary. And then I played a Sub 37 at guitar center. An hour went by before I recognized it had passed. They had no longer any subsequent 37 so I went on a search and finally found one. A white unit. I paid nearly $2000 for it and I don’t regret it. Moog has created a monster synth!

Thank you for this very informative video. Via MIDI I connected my Keystep Pro to my Sub 37. I can now use the Keystep to sequence the Sub 37. The sequencer seems pretty robust but I’ve only played around a little bit. I was especially surprised that the Gate knob on the Keystep seemed to correctly adjust the same function on the Sub 37. But then again, I’m usually surprised when I can get something to work on the first try because I’m “Synth-Challenged. “ 😣

Excellent videos - thank you very much for your efforts!!! You probably know: a very nice feature (at least in my opinion) is "velocity" (you can set its influance on both envelopes) on the sequencer - the velocity-amount can be stored and edited individually for each sequencer-step (similar as you show it with the modwheel)

Brilliant tutorial. Thanks for making the effort. Is there any way to change the velocity of a particular note within a step sequence?
@StarskyCarr8 жыл бұрын
+Rhian Sheehan On the editor you can adjust each note's velocity individually. On the synth you'd have to edit that step and replay the note at the required velocity.

maybe you're looking at the wrong page? But if I ever get any weirdness I find resetting factory settings helps.I sometimes get odd things happen with MIDI - not nailed it down yet but there must be a plugin I use that messes things up every now and then.

I'm finding syncing this with LogicX is very temperamental. Every time I open a new project its a fair bit of setup menu button pushing before it works. And then when it does it doesnt seem fullproof. I wouldnt want to be in a live situation and rely on it. Is that usual?

help! why if I move knob to REC, play sequence and then turn knob to SEQ with arpeggiator button ON instead of hearing my sequence when I hold one key, I get one constant note and only see numbers on my screen changing like if it is playing my sequence?

@StarskyCarr6 жыл бұрын
I use Logic x and you have to choose the Midi outputs you want to sync. You can choose 2 individual outputs or all outputs. The sub37 has to be one of these. Maybe something to check?

Thanks again. The sequence you play (the 64 step sequence). I assume you made it yourself and its not a factory preset. Is it downloadable or something? It is pretty simple, but it really got something going on! I might be tired in my head and the Subsequent 37 is completely new to me (had it less than 24 hours), but it would be nice to experiment with that sound/sequence and learn some of the fearures playing around with that sequence. Is it available or can I just get the few guidelines to notes/arp settings/LFO? Thanks. Great videos. 👍🙂

Hello mate, great video - really instructive :) I notice you mentioned at the end that the patch editor is great - how can I get a hold of that? I've been searching and the consensus on the Moog forum is that Moog are unlikely to ever release it! Apologies if you covered this in one of the previous videos in this series, I've only seen this one (though off the back of this I'll definitely be checking them out at some point!)

thanks for the vid! I got 2 questions. first: can you record live? that is: play in the sequence live with the keyboard while the the midi clock from external gear is running? and the second question: what happens when you switch between sound banks, do you loose the midi clock (from external gear)? by that i mean: when you chained the sub 37 as a slave to the master device and wanna play another sound bank while the whole thing is running, do you loose midi clock? Because obviously if you are a live act you don't wanna change to another bank and suddenly loose midi while you are playing live!
@mitchhopkins85753 жыл бұрын
You are the second person to ask if you can record live and no answers from anyone...seems like no to me...which is a shame...I don't get why synth manufacturers aren't getting the live performance aspect of synths. Lots of synths with poor sequencers...why should we have to buy a keystep pro for everything?

Is there no way to link a series of sequences together ? it looks like I'll have to use an external sequencer to do this. Am I right ?

Yes, it's designed to be like old modular step sequencers, not a full-blown song arranger sequencer.

Nice. Is this the latest firmware? It seems like it - I know they did a lot of tweaks on the sequencer from the initial release. I'd like to know before I study it in depth, though. ;)

Thanks for the speedy reply. I've have my Sub37 for a couple months and I'm still wrapping my head around it. The other pars of this tut helped me understand the envelope section better (the looping, multitrig, etc.). And I always forget about that mod destination trick of press-and-twiddle, so this has all been worth the price of admission already. I'll definitely dedicate some focus on the arp/seq. I've only fiddled with it a bit thus far. Thanks again.

Thanks for the videos. Given your experience with the Moog Sub 37 & the Prophets 6 & 8, how close do the Prophets come to replicating that classic deep Moog bass?
@StarskyCarr8 жыл бұрын
Darryll Corpening you can get very close... indistinguishable really if your doing pretty simple sounds. Single oscillator sq wave punchy bass lines for example. I doubt anyone could tell in a mix. There's slight differences as you would expect but nothing that would make me think eg the P6 can't do a nice phat Moogish bass. Interesting topic though.. I might do a short video. What sort of a saline did you have in mind?
@StarskyCarr8 жыл бұрын
.... having said that... I've been comparing with the voyage - typical Moog sound. But the S37 has the potential for deeper thunderous bass. Not the typical Moog sound I think you mean but something to bear in mind if it's all about the bass. P6 and P8 get near enough so as not to really notice, but have more flexibility in the studio. P8's sequencer is more useful, more like the S37. P6 has the onboard analog distortion - S37 has the multidrive.
@StarskyCarr8 жыл бұрын
just uploaded a comparison of the sub37 and pro6 bass kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTMdaKiqJWJhrs

Your sub37 and pro6 bass video is fantastic. Thanks much for your dedicated work of getting that done. It is VERY helpful. The Sub 37 and the prophet really are good companions. The P6 comes close to the Moog bass; but as you said, the Sub 37 is simply more 'ballsy'. I don't think you've done any Prophet 12 videos but from all of my research, the 12 (rather than the 8) sounds like the best option for me for my first polyphonic VA board. Any other advise you may have is welcomed. I wish you were in or close to North Carolina. I would definitely pay you for programming lessons. Thanks again!
