FYI DIYers banging in a metal spike into the ground can be extremely dangerous especially if you dont know if their is a main electrical cable or main gas line. Yes it can be obvious but in some cases hitting a hidden gas line or electrical cable with a metal spike can and will kill you and hitting a gas line can again cause major damage. The easy answer is use wooden stakes. Watch D&J Projects as this scenario actually happend to Taff.

Thanks for the video! A landscaper is recommending to me that we dry lay 2cm porcelain like this over compacted gravel (same as concete slabs), thoughts? His reasoning is if water gets in between or under the tiles and freezes, it can disrupt them. I'm a bit apprehensive of this approach due to potential movement. We do live in Switzerland and get colder winters than UK.

Question about your diluted SBR put down on lean top before you laid mortar and tile. Did you have to lay over the top in a specific time period or was it just seal it and then its fine to lay over top over a few days?

That’s a good point but SBR is a latex to it will create some bonding qualities, thanks for your feedback
@pjroberts2010
@pjroberts2010 3 жыл бұрын
Do you have to use SBR? I recently had my patio done and I didn't notice the builder putting SBR on the Indian sandstone slabs. I'm not sure if he put it in the mix. Several slabs are loose although at the time it was freezing conditions so they might have not bonded from that. I just hope he comes out to fix it. He used a lot of compo leftover from another job. It's good to see tradesmen like you take care in their work.

Nice video John but watch the levels. Should be laying upto 150mm below DPC? Given that there's no designed drainage it would be helpful to cover falls away from the building (1:80 to1:60?) - looks like you have some standing water? otherwise thumbs up from me and you come across on camera really well.
@GreentopLandscapes
@GreentopLandscapes 3 жыл бұрын
The British standard is 1:60 for porcelain but it just looks stupid, I see your point about standing water but ist not its called water Tension, its something you can not avoid with Porcelain, thanks for the thumbs up.

Building Regs require DPC 150mm above finished ground. A competent Surveyor will pick this up on a House Buyers Survey.

So how do they deal with wheel chair access, look at the paving expert on is domestic situation rule,
@RegSchmo
@RegSchmo 3 жыл бұрын
@@GreentopLandscapes I mentioned the DPC point as its something I frequently come across as a Surveyor and your videos provide some really great advice. You mentioned the Paving Expert.com who covers these points better than I could in this message. Alternative 'dry area' arrangements, drained channels and linear drains are all options where costs or client preference means the '150mm below DPC' cant be maintained. Where disabled access is concerned some tolerance will be applied by Building Control providing the 'breech' is limited to the width of a door opening and a drainage solution can be applied (see Part M Building Regulations). Alternatively, if a client is insistent on a 'level threshold' / paving an injected DPC or water proof render / tanking may provide a solution? Ultimately, I would go back to the Paving Expert's comments where the Property Owner should be made aware of the potential consequences and consent to any breach in order to safe guard come back on the Contractor. I hope you are Ok with me raising this point, I found this video very informative and very much appreciate the time you have taken make these videos for us - Im looking forward to watching the 'Massive Garden Patio Fail' as some small relief from my own Clients problems

Do you install a soft joint for expansion in 900x600 20mm porcelain slabs, the base is 110mm of compacted scalps and am fixing with a 4:1 semi dry mix 40mm thickish, sbr slurry on the backs and using 10mm joints using mapei flexible ultraclour plus grout. Any advice on expansion joints would be a great help. The patio is approximately 9 x 4.5 metres. In previous exterior installations with 12mm porcelain we would install a soft joint or expansion bar every 10 foot. This is my first outing with 20mm porcelain slabs.

10mm seems to be a rather massive grout width. i used 5mm on mine but the spacers were hard to come by. 4mm is more common.
@GreentopLandscapes

With a Lean mix Phill mate you really dont need an expansion joint but it would not hurt to drop one in
@philllowe2251
@philllowe2251 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the advice, greatly appreciated. The reason for the horrid 10mm joint was so it had a little extra flex. Think I am going to reduce the joint to 6mm and lay on a 5:1 mix. As its a full bed i will run the brick saw down the mortar after laying to create a weak spot in the bed and soft joint above. I have always laid porcelain outside on a screed with expansion joints and using a thinset adhesive. Its great to get other experienced fitters advice when using new methods.

In the concrete 10mm is so thin so you need to lay on concrete with an exterior adhesive but a wet pour needs steak or fibre or it will crack

Great vidoes - watched a few of your porcelain paving laying and planning a DIY job. Just a question on the lean mix on top of the sub base, is it needed or just preferable? The mix seems to vary quite a bit from one video to the next. Wet mix and dry(ish) mix. Which one do you decide on on any partiular job? - Cheers Jonnyboy

I don’t understand why you can get so close to the DPC level without worrying about it at all. I’m having my patio redone as we speak and the contractor is insisting we leave a 10-15cm gap despite having soffits and only one storey of house to worry about rain water running down for most of the length of the patio.
