Have you had any issue's from setting the stand directly on your deck?

I have not. Some embers pop out of the firepit from time to time even though I have the spark screen on but it hasn’t caused any problems. I think the spark screen is a must if the firepit is placed on a deck or close to the house.

What is the smaller "soft wood" you use for kindling?

Loblolly pine (yellow) and Eastern Red Cedar (Red)

Use pellets, much cleaner burn and no smoke or black smoke

I’ve never tried pellets to start a fire. I wonder how difficult they are to make since I don’t pay for fire starters or kindling.
