Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her p
ost-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I started my zucchini and pickling cucumbers WAY to early. Like last month already... I'm in Sweden so, it takes a while for things to warm up outside. I had found/bought one of these narrow and tall glass towers/display things and bought cheapo grow lights for each of the 4 glass shelf layers of the tower. So I could keep my seedlings safe from my feline masters... 😉 I was going through all of my seeds to see which ones I had and which ones I'd need to buy. While checking them out, I came across a pack of zucchini and cucumbers that had "expired" like 5 yrs. ago. Decided to do an experiment that I'd seen on one of the KZbin channels I watch and mixed 3% peroxide with water at a 50/50 ratio and let the seeds soak for a few minutes. Of course, thinking that only a few if any would germinate... I placed the soaked but not rinsed off seeds in between wet paper towels and then in plastic zip lock bags. Threw the bags into the glass tower without turning the grow lights on... After only 3 days, I decided to take a look at the seeds, not believing that any of them would have sprouted roots... OH MY!!! 😱ALL of the seeds both zucchini and cucumbers had all near 2 centimeter roots. I think there were only one of each of the seeds that hadn't sprouted! 😳 Of course, I didn't want to just throw those spouts away so I planted both seed packs/all of the seeds in the double method plastic "party cups". Placed them in the glass tower which is now so full I wouldn't be able to fit even a leek start in there and they've grown so big that, I could have if it had been possible, plant them outside but... NOPE. we have about a foot of snow on the ground. I have no were else I can put them safely, even if I would be able to put them in bigger pots, due to that I have 6 cats 🙀 that I KNOW would destroy them... So... I'm guessing I'll have to plant new seeds but, will definitely be doing the soaking method again since I have 3 more seed packets that have gone beyond their "best before" date... 😳😂 My hard neck garlic that I planted late Oktober last year are all up about 20 centimeters but, can't see them right now due to the snow. Not worried, I know they can handle it. Saw that a few of my large leaf spinach as well as the dark green kale, that I really don't like had survived the winter and have started growing, but, they're also covered now. Will be interesting to see if they survive. The carrots I planted late fall have also come up above the soil. Planted those so that I could harvest their seeds this year. My mint and salvia have started to put up new leaves but, I think I killed off most of my miniature strawberries when I relocated them last fall... Oh well, I'll plant new ones where I want them to stay... Marigold/Calendula, when it's warmed up a little more, I just sprinkle in a few of my large container bags and cover with just a sprinkling of soil, keep them moist and they pop up within a few weeks. I plant in the same containers every year, just adding some new compost and see that some of the seeds that have dropped from the previous years, pop up faster.

Zone 4 technically, but zone 3 in reality (Southwestern Montana, bitterly cold, dry winds, 5000+ elevation) I have started onions, shallots, leeks, micro/dwarf/paste/slicer/cherry tomatoes, multicolored bell peppers, jalapenos, sweet peppers, salad veggies in growbags that will stay indoors, petunias, pansies, snapdragons, celery, cilantro and lots of other herbs under grow lights in our basement. I've been more or less using your monthly suggestions for seed-starting and was just wondering if i should get going on my brassicas. Perfect timing! I've always pretty much waited to plant anything outdoors till June 1st, but the past couple years I've realized that the cold-loving veggies could be going in much earlier. This is the 3rd year sowing my own seeds indoors (after four decades of gardening!!!) I'm keeping a detailed diary of all my seed-sowing etc, so I can more or less rely on it going forward. Thank you for your wonderful info.

Zone 6 Brant County area...My tip would be do NOT start tomatoes, cantaloupe, or Loofah in January no matter how excited you are that you bought grow lights. Also make sure you have "gnat free" soil. I brought in my herb planter that I had outside all summer and GNATS in ALL my seedlings. UGH. I've used nematodes and hydrogen peroxide sprays and after 4 months there is still one gnat flitting around my lettuce plants. 😢

Zone 5/6 guerilla gardener extrordinaire. I spew seeds and seedlings thruought my property and then absoutely neglect them for the rest of their lives with the exception of weeding and pruning. So long as theyre thinned enough for good airflow there will be a few winners!! I also select plantings for perenial or self seeding ability in my zone so that once ive got something set its not a recurring expense. Works great so far!

At least the asparagus is established. 🎉 Looks like we are getting a warm spring again this year, so i will probably start some melons, squash, and cukes sooner than later. I usually just buy my tomatoes because the local greenhouse does a good job, and i have limited indoor space atm...working on creating more. 🤞 We are on 7 acres, so there is plenty to keep us busy.

That big dump of snow we had in Ont last night sure slows down the garden. Saw honey bees on my crocus yesterday. Probably shivering in the hives now. I've been digging up strawberries and raspberries for transplanting as bare root. I have a bunch in wood pellet bags waiting in the garage ( and yeah I sell some off or trade) and got some into the ground. Another 20 to go into the new patch! Yes on protecting your cold weather babies. I do row cover and sometimes 6 ml plastic over that with pvc hoops. Hey my kratky hydro experiment with red bell peppers is going really well. To love eggplants: slice (thick) your eggplant, brush liberally with oil (it will absorb it all so be VERY generous), season to taste (Montreal spice blend is my favorite) then grill on the BBQ. Boy! Kind of random relative to this video but wanted to ask if you or the GeekCrew™️ had any experience or knowledge on growing avocado from seed? I’m doing so indoors for fun, and I’m seeing a lot of mixed information regarding topping the early growth or not. Also so happy to see so much content! Love this time of year! Sad I’m in Zone 2 though 😭

You aren't alone! I got started a bit late, picked up a heating mat and planted a set of sweet peppers in the third week of March, sadly none of them germinated because I misunderstood the depth for the seed and stuffed all of them halfway into a roughly inch-tall coconut choir seedling puck. :< Peppers seem to take ages to germinate tho, I think I should've started them at the start of February. I might just pick up some baby plants from a local nursery.

Hi, the water where I live is the same. I bought a ph meter and use lemon juice to lower the ph. About 0.4ml into a liter of water gets it down to 6-7. To raise ph, I use a liquid silica. There are also ph up and down solutions you can buy but these work for me. I’ll leave any actual science to Ashley though.

Hot peppers were started last week of February and are doing great. Tomatoes (paste, slicer, and cherry) were started mid march and are also doing great. I was going to start cucumbers but decided to directly sow those based on your advice. I always start cucumbers inside so this year is definitely an experiment! Broccoli is going in this weekend. The snapdragon seeds just do not seem to want to germinate so I tried on the weekend with pelleted seeds and I'm waiting to see if they'll germinate.

Thanks for the info Ashley. I'm not at the indoor 'starter' phase of my gardening...yet. We buy our tomatoes and herbs, transplanting them in May / June. But we do plant our own potatoes, lettuce, beans, peas, and cucumbers. I also transplanted blueberries, rhubarb, and raspberries last year. Can't wait to see if they survived. I've had trouble with my radishes. Two years in a row now I have gotten worms. From what I understand, I need to cover the soil around them in order to keep flies from laying them. Would the same have to be done, say, in a planter box?

I’m in the prairies in southeastern Alberta. There’s quite a bit of farmland in the area (Hutterite neighbours). Learned the hard way that industrial farming creates prolific infestations…literally millions of flea beetles. They like eating canola, and when crops get sprayed they come to my garden. 😭 They annihilate cruciferous, no matter the maturity in my experience. Radishes and kale are going in ASAP!! Do you think I could plant broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower and just keep it covered? Really layer up for chilly nights? Thanks and love your channel!
