On this episode of StarTalk Chat Room, we dive into episodes five and six of Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined in-studio by comic co-host Chuck Nice and neuroscientist Heather Berlin, PhD to break down the ins and outs of what went down in each episode.
We start with episode five, “The Cosmic Connectome,” which investigates the wiring and functionality of the brain. Heather gives us a little history on the discovery of epilepsy. We explore the invention of the electroencephalogram (EEG) which is a test to evaluate the electrical activity in the brain. You’ll learn why epilepsy can be either genetic or “acquired.” You’ll also learn about the different types of seizures that can occur including “absence seizures.” Neil ponders if we will be able to diagnose someone with epilepsy before they have their first seizure. And, Heather tells us about some of the bleeding edge work being done at the Blue Brain Project and the Allen Institute for Brain Science.
Then, we move on to episode six, “The Man of a Trillion Worlds,” which explores Carl Sagan’s impact on science communication. Discover how the terms like “astrobiology” came to be because of Carl. Neil and Chuck discuss Cosmos’ interesting use of animation to depict history.
Neil takes us back to the first time he met Carl Sagan. He tells us about his trip to Cornell and his memorable visit to Carl’s office. We discuss the value of mentorship. You’ll learn why Neil eventually chose to go to Harvard over Cornell. All that, plus, you’ll hear why the field of science communication and beyond owes a debt of gratitude to Carl Sagan.

Neil is one person I would like to meet before I die. It seems no matter the question, even if someone asked him ''Is the Sun a Star?'' he'd probably level with the person, tell them straight up ''Yes'' but also give them a history lesson of Astronomy and Human understanding of the space beyond our skies, if he has the time to do so. We need more people like Neil, the way he interacts with others is almost inviting, meaning those who don't know much on a subject would be more willing to ask a question, because really, there are no dumb questions if you think about it, you only have knowledge to gain by asking a question, it's in your benefit to ask questions.

Hi Neil, Hi Chuck, So, here's a question that I hope you will entertain: "What exactly is the disconnect between Quantum Physics, and the Theory of Relativity? Also, what actually separated Newton From Einstein? Where is it, exactly, that the solutions stop gelling between the two Masters and the one Mastery? Also, how thin does the noodle get? If we can measure the gravity of a black hole, we should know how thin the noodle can get.

Hi, guys! I have a great topic for you! The pattern of Magnetic field. Where it comes from and how do we know it looks like that? The thing is, there is a book that claims the textbooks are false. And in that book there is offered an alternative pattern and Mechanics of this field. The book claims that there is a direct proof for all of those claims... the book is this - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0851MWT7S/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_i_.EXDEbQGRKXSN If you go to Amazon and enter 'george warehouseman', it will lead you to that book. If you chose 'look inside' at the top of the book, it will lead you to few images where the patterns of Magnetic field are depicted during Attraction and repulsion. Very interesting topic. Could be the next big breakthrough in science...

The main disconnect between quantum theory and general relativity is that we cannot describe the processes of quantum physics with relativity, and vice versa. The idea is that you want an all encompassing theory, that can explain how everything happens, without having two different sets of mathematics to describe the same thing on the very small, and very large scales. The noodle can be no thinner than the Planck distance, the shortest measurable distance known to quantum physics, about 1.616 * 10 -35m.
@TomiTapio
@TomiTapio 4 жыл бұрын
We don't know what gravity does on the small scale of the quantum. Is there a graviton "force carrier particle". Photons experience no time passing, since they move at the speed of light (speed of causality propagation).

I also lost a friend to epilepsy, we lived next to him in a block of flats and we could hear when he was having a fit so we could go and help, a bunch of guys move into one of the units and that night they had a massive party, 3am finish! Is it true or merely apocryphal and ridiculous that the term "metaphysics" derives from the arrangement of Aristotle's scrolls on a shelf, with the scroll relating to what we call "metaphysics" being "beyond" or "after" the scroll about "physics"? According to "Google", this is true, and the CURRENT meaning of the word as being "the study of things beyond the physical realm" (or something like that anyway) was derived later.
