If you were lucky enough this past July, you might have caught a glimpse of Comet NEOWISE before it left Earth’s view. If not, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Negin Farsad are answering fan-submitted Cosmic Queries about Comet NEOWISE and more with cosmochemist and author Natalie Starkey, PhD.
First discovered in March this year, you’ll learn a little background about NEOWISE. Where did it come from? Can we be sure that it came from our solar system? Natalie tells us why speed can be a strong signifier of where a comet is coming from. You’ll learn what it means to be a “long-period” comet. You’ll also learn why comets have elongated orbits instead of circular orbits.
Next, Neil gives us some history on the Oort Cloud. We take a look at how NEOWISE got its name and the naming process of scientific objects. Neil also shares some interesting information about Halley’s Comet that you might not know.
Natalie tells us what unanswered question about comets she most wants to see answered. We ponder whether comets and/or asteroids could have delivered the building blocks of life to Earth. Explore amino acids on comets and in space. Would we find amino acids on NEOWISE? Examine the possibilities of Earth having “interstellar water.” And, you’ll also investigate if we can harvest water from comets to solve water crisis and famine here on Earth.
We discuss how different chemical compositions change the color of comets. You’ll hear why a comet’s “tail” can be a misnomer. Lastly, find out what it means for a comet to be “dead.” All that, plus, Natalie takes us through the scene of two comets colliding with each other and we debate if a probe could hitch a ride on a comet to a world beyond.

Hey editor, PLEASE BALANCE THE VOLUME LEVELS!

Often, software which does such a thing ruins the audio. Such as the very loudness issue you mentioned for one example. The audio was not fading up and down during the recording of this episode, nor does it exist in the original file. That came after the fact when it was uploaded to youtube. The audio version on the Startalk website does not have such peaks and valleys. I'm not a member and have not seen the video posted on the site itself, but I suspect it is also free of such audio issues.

@@SorenK0 True, however you missed an important aspect. The volume issue came after it was uploaded to this site. Not before, after. There is no adjusting once it is uploaded. They would have to delete and upload the video again in order to fix the volume fades. Sure, it's not hard. But when the issue occurred after uploading, it is not their fault. After all, youtube is FAR from any level of perfection. Listen to the audio version on the startalk website. No fading will be found. That is the audio from the original recording. The problem started after uploading to youtube.

Stay strong and safe. It's not forever. The tunnel is not as long as it appears. There are a lot of ratings for news channels in keeping the public on edge. It IS a serious virus, for now. Brilliant minds are working non-stop. More and more people are beating the virus, leading to more and more antibody samples which will lead to a vaccine. The important thing is to minimize the spreading to keep damage minimal until a vaccine is produced. Sadly however, modern medicine is entirely dependent upon the voters. We need to vote for more funding for medical research and related sciences. Stay safe and we all shall stand tall again on the other side of this dark, yet short tunnel.

Both Negin and Natalie were dolls! I always love when Natalie appears to put on a cosmochemical clinic 👽👌👌 LUV everyone at the podcast and the educators !!! I would love to hear how sound affects the way electricity moves and interacts in solutions and also would like to see how sound can briefly manipulate the chemical structure and diatomical structure or particles and objects.... I think the next thing would be cool to examine space rocks in solution and see how certain frequencies affect what I said prior( structure, chemical composition, etc) along with pressure and temperature and the occurring magnetic properties... I’ve thought for a long time sound could be a major key in space travel and terrestrial movement !!!!

In "The Expanse" series of novels and subsequent tv/cable series, the 4 main characters (Jim, Naomi, Alex, & Amos) initially served aboard the huge ice hauler spaceship 'Canterbury' which harvested water ice from Saturn's rings and transported it inward to sell primarily to the civilization in the asteroid belt (the Belt as opposed to the Earth/Moon and Mars). The company that owned the 'Cant' (along with other ice haulers) was called Pur'n'Kleen. Water and air are precious commodities in the Belt, even with intense conservation and recycling. Even in these three technically advanced civilizations, hauling stuff up the gravity wells of the planetary bodies is expensive.

The large comet I saw within our atmosphere (Eastern Ohio, possibly about 1990) was headed about due Eastward, and was green with green churning flames. Never did see a report on that - surely I wasn't the only one who saw it. Huge thing gong across the day-time sky, seemingly both slow and fast at the same time, but a constant speed.
@SailorsGirl1957
@SailorsGirl1957 2 жыл бұрын
It was a meteorite, not a comet, in 1990. I saw it too. I'll never forget it. Green. Yep. It landed on a lady's car in New York. I know you wrote this a year ago, but I hope you see my reply...
@workingguy6666
@workingguy6666 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailorsGirl1957 I see it! I looked up the videos and direction, and while the green is certainly correct, the time of day doesn't seem to be for mine. The one I saw was mid-day - it was daylight out, and I had an off-day from college where I was home. I recall it being when other people would normally be at work - normal work-day hours - and perhaps that was why nobody reported on it. The Peekskill one, that you refer to, was two years later, and I was living back in Pittsburgh at that time. Thank you, though - it was nice to see the Peekskill meteorite videos that reminded me of that green.

@@workingguy6666 I'm so glad you saw my reply. The GREEN meteorite I saw was in the early evening, maybe around 7 or so, in Northern Virginia. And it was in the early 90s. I was driving with my little girl in the backseat. I saw it outta the corner of my eye and was able to stop the car to watch it... for a second or two 😆 Are you sure about the time of day, because crashing in NY would seem about right with you in Ohio and me in VA. Oh well, pretty cool anyway. Nice talking to you. Happy New Year.
@workingguy6666
@workingguy6666 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailorsGirl1957 Happy new year! Yes, I am sure about the time of day. If it had been dark out, and/or evening, my family would have been home. Basically blue skies, and a meteorite absolutely huge. I mean, the green flames I saw were on it, and across its mass, instead of coming off of the back of it. Happy New Year to you and yours! So glad to at least have learned about the 1992 event.

george mwanza You do understand how generational learning is achieved? And that there are 7.xx billion people on the planet, not 7.xx billion scientists/physicists, so what might be old irrelevant news/information to some maybe brand new motivational discoveries for someone else. Then again perhaps I just wanted to be encouraging. And perhaps you are just seeking the next discovery/frontier? The acquisition of knowledge among a population is like a wave ( some are just beginning, some peeking, and some ending their exploration for answers ) and a particle ( if you measure the knowledge learned by one individual the wave collapses because of the measurement you now know exactly how much that person knows and of which topics but it is only a snap-shot of a point in time yet the person still continues on in the present as part of the wave ). ... that was fun :)

He's probably working on another of his contracts. He does quite a bit of work on top of this show. But at the same time, co-host change-ups will occur. It's an effort to reach out to more comedy fans to bring science to them as well. After all, not every comic is enjoyed by everyone. Chuck won't be gone very long. Maybe an episode or two at a given time. Of course, this was assumption based on discussions those two have had on this show. I have no secret knowledge or anything. lol

I got excited and wanted to show my spouse, now I knew Mr Tyson by name only, and have never seen it spelled out, so I texted her 'Check out this video with Neil The Grass Tyson'.... and she made fun of me 🤣🤣 And now I'm gonna go through all of these videos and listen while I paint! >:3

Going to say this, i dont mean it offensively whatsoever! The current comedic Co Host Negin Farsad is a great individual, however I feel as if there isnt enough curiosity or understanding on her part, I am not at all saying i dislike her, or the way she presents. That being said, i feel there are better choices, somehow i feel as if we have all grown to adore chuck, simply because of his interest and knowledge base growing over time and being a regular thing. Moving forward, it would be best that that "green screen" hour would be best indulged for the co host to brush up on a few things prior to filming. There are so many off topic remarks its hard to keep train of thought going without getting side tracked, and thats not on the personality or person specifically, just the intellectual content bouncing off of the co-host instead of being understood and absorbed really makes these episodes more difficult to watch as they feel less engaging. Shout out to everybody who makes the show possible, without all of you, there is no show. That goes for all behind the scenes crew, past co hosts, all stars and all of the wonderful guests. You make this show very special, and helped educate through interest, and wowing people. Everybody who is involved in the show has a special place in my heart Maddison

In another KZbin series, that I am watching, History of the Earth, the narrator, in episode no. 9, The Panspermia Theory, relates how the chemical composition of Earth's water is identical to that of asteroids but not so much to that of comets which might seem counterintuitive. If the Earth's water relates to asteroids, and the amino acids are found in comets, could one have brought the water and the other the basic chemicals for life?
@samilamby
@samilamby 4 жыл бұрын
Dennis Nicholson Yes! So as a 3rd year astrophysics student, I can pitch in here. From the planetary formation theory, we understand that the closeness to the sun (aka the temperature of the region) determines what material from the initial solar nebula (gas cloud) will condense. From that we understand that water condenses out beyond Mars, and therefore bodies formed in those regions will be rich in water (gas giants, Kuiper Belt Objects, etc.). Then, as in the early solar system orbits are not stable, tiny particles of rock/ice/volatiles will smash into each other - moving closer to the sun, further from the sun, etc. *As planets and asteroids are created together in this process, the chemical composition of the individual components (i.e. water) will be the same.* Therefore, it is not comets that brought water to Earth, but in fact early solar system asteroids and planetesimals. As I have not watched this Panspermia Theory episode, I’m not positive as to what the narrator is referring to when they say that the chemical composition of water in comets is not so much identical. My guess would be that this is either due to the fact that while comets also formed during planetary formation, they were much further out so they accumulated much more ice than rock, or that some long-period Oort Cloud comets originate from outside of our solar system, thus they have a different chemical composition as they were formed from a different gas cloud. Either way, these comets are the best theory for what brought the basic chemicals for life.

@@samilamby Thank you for your reply. It basically corroborates the Asteroid Water Origin Theory but where do comets and their cargo of amino acids fit in?
@samilamby
@samilamby 4 жыл бұрын
@@dennisnicholson952 I have not studied as in-depth on comets, but what I understand from doing some basic reading on the Rosetta mission (The ESA has a nice article on it), some comets that have a different water composition + amino acids are likely formed in some other exosystem. If those comets impacted Earth, they could have brought the origins of life.
