StarTalk Podcast: Cosmic Queries - Until the End of Time, with Neil deGrasse Tyson & Brian Greene

On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering fan-submitted Cosmic Queries with the help of theoretical physicist and author Brian Greene. Brian has been a frequent guest on StarTalk and always tends to blow our minds when he shows up - this time is no different. The topic for this episode is Until the End of Time, which also happens to be the name of Brian’s new book!
How far will we journey into the cosmos during our lifetime? Neil and Brian ponder this but they also debate how long humanity will last in general. Will we outlive the predicted length of existence we’ve seen from other species? Will we destroy ourselves? What happens if we send a crew into interstellar space and when they return everyone is gone? You’ll learn how long it takes just to get out of the Milky Way alone and what humans would be like if they grew up never knowing the Earth.
We explore free choice and free will. Brian tells us why he thinks we don’t have either. Discover more about time: is it made of something? You better believe we talk about string theory. Brian shares why spacetime itself could be stitched together by the threads of quantum entanglement. You’ll hear how dark energy could rip the fabric of spacetime - and why that might not be as catastrophic as it sounds. You’ll also learn why black holes shrink down if spacetime rips apart.
We dive into the meaning of life: Is there any? And, if there isn’t, what’s the point in living? Brian explains why he thinks physics should guide us and also set us free. Neil and Brian discuss the role of religion and if that would change if we were contacted by extraterrestrials. You’ll find out where the universe ends. Lastly, we investigate entropy in the universe. All that, plus, discover more about the simulation universe and if the human brain will ever figure out human consciousness.

Brian Greene!!!! When I was in college, after years of hating reading (because of a negative school experiences), Elegant Universe was the first book I ever read on purpose. It set me on a path to learning about string theory, learning to think critically, discovering Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Steven Hawkings, reading Einstein's papers on relativity, diving into quantum space theory, and so much more. Not that you'll ever see this, but thank you!

the way i see what brian said about the repairing spacetime, i imagine spacetime as like a bunch of bubbles where the bubbles are all next to eachother connected technically and one in the middle popping would make a hole but the surrounding area almost immediately fills in/repairs the hole. it seems plausible to me

No, because bubbles have a fix amount of particles inside it, and therefore the other bubbles would thin out to refill that space. What Brian suggest if that the space it will recreate it self from nothing to repair itself, without losing any other space that is already in existence. Two different concepts.

The fact we don’t even know what space consist of and it can easily be something we can’t even currently grasp, is as possible as anything else we can think of space currently not being occupied by the current known matter we can grasp. You can look up the experiments that prove we have no free will to a certain extent but I still think we do have some free will in a macro level. like choosing a degree or a career path. but when it comes to deciding if you want McDonald's for lunch, then that's possibly different.

It would be beyond arrogant to think that we, as humans, know everything that there is to know RIGHT NOW. Calculus “existed” before Newton “found” it (worked it out). Relativity “existed” in the 1700’s but was “discovered” by Einstein in 1905. There’s NO REASON to think that we know everything now. LUCKILY we live in a time (and hopefully it never is taken away from us), that RELIGION does not dictate what we “know” because THEY (religious leaders) TELL US what is fact (sorry Galileo, Copernicus, etc) and what isn’t. We (humans) have an entire universe to discover yet!

Light travels about a billion feet per second so everything you observe is one billionth of a second in the past per foot of distance. Space is Time, it's spacetime. From your standpoint you are the end of time and everything away from you is the past; but from the perspective of any other thing, it is the end of time and everything away from those points is the past. The distant edge of the universe is the dawn of time, not the end of time. From the perspective of every point in the universe, relative to every other point in the universe, right here right now is the end of time and every point at any distance is the past. It is in the right here, right now where the future unfolds based on occurrences in the past effecting the present.

However the combined gravitational pull of EVERYTHING, every single particle, planet, black hole, galaxy, etc. Is nowhere near as powerful as it would have to be to stop the expansion of the universe that is caused by dark energy which means, as best we can tell, the fate of our universe is unavoidable and only ever expands faster and faster.

@@godless1014 Except Gravity was debunked by Einstein who replaced it with General Relativity in 1916, and GR was first proved in 1919 with the Eddington Eclipse Experiment and it has never been repeatably proved wrong. There is no gravitational pull. That there is no force acting on a body in freefall was Einstein's happiest thought, remember? There is no force of gravity and there can be no carrier particle for that force since it does not exist. It is just the general motion of everything in the universe relative to everything else warping spacetime. The constant increasing expansion has also recently been challenged. Also, the stuff expanding is Dark Energy, not Dark Matter.

@@ZeroOskul um . . . Dude . . . I don't know where you get your info from but . . . Um . . . No lol. Gravity is still a thing lol. GR doesn't say that gravity doesn't exist but that our classical Newtonian interpretation of it wasn't the full picture. Also I already said that the thing doing the expanding isn't dark matter but dark energy. Thanks though. I got this.
