I used to live close to Wake Field Gunj before 1947 but did not know Kaura family's woolen works. I thought Ludhiana produced only Khaki socks and Jerseys before 1947. Mr. Kaura was wrong in claiming that Basant mela used to be in area other than Gau Shala. Before 1947 and early 50's, Ghumar Mandi was all farmland. There used to be a well at Ghumar Mandi where the regular morning walkers used to take a bath. There were NO houses in the vicinity. The closest structure was SITA RAM BAAG (present Gulmeg Hotel). The SITA RAM BAAG had a boys hostel and all kinds of fruit trees. My mother's morning walk used to be round trip from Neem Wala Chowk to SITA RAM BAAG. There was no temple either. In fact, there was no structures after the Jagraon Bridge. There was Loco Shed on the left and Railway colony on the right of the bridge. Just imagine that Diyanand Hospital was in a jungle, completely isolated. Dandi Swamy was too far away from the inner city. One interesting festival, ANN KUTT, used to be a famous one. On this day, Jain establishment (Jain Girls School, etc) used to give out FREE Kadi Chawal (no wheat). Do we still have ANN Putt day in Ludhiana? Thank you, Shripaul Ji.
