Thank you for this video!! I just got my starter locs over the weekend and I’m not 100% happy with them. I chose two strand twists and wanted them small. But after getting home I realized that some of parts in the back are bigger than what I wanted. I think I have either 80 or 82 twists but definitely wanted the twists smaller because I don’t want thick locs once they mature. Especially because I already have long thick hair naturally.

You’re welcome!! Definitely reach back out to the person who started your locs and talk to them because they’re going to swell up. You want to be sure you’re happy with your locs 🥰

I don’t trust loctican work but I trust some of their tips. Idk if that makes any sense lol I don’t want a loctician touching my hair but I trust their knowledge. So I’d listen to their tips and tricks on KZbin but that same loctician touching my hair? No way. I’m very meticulous and I know my hair the best out of everyone. I also know what I am doing. That’s a big part of it. Sometimes I feel stylists get too cocky and think everything is one size fits all. I also feel sometimes they get irritated and treat your hair like it’s nothing. Or they get tired and make mistakes or try to speed the process up (like making some of your parts too wide and your parting crooked) I’ve started my own locs and my only issue is loose hairs and some frizz which is normal even for mature locs so especially started locs. I LOVE my parts and I love the loc size bc I can tell they will thicken up perfectly. I haven’t been to a salon or stylist in 12 years. I have trust issues lol too many bad experiences. So I have over 12 year’s experience with doing my natural hair. If my hair is messed up I rather mess my hair up FOR FREE rather than pay someone hundreds of dollars to mess my hair up and go through arguing and explaining what I want just to not get it for the fifth time 😂

AMEN!! I agree with everything you said. I don’t doubt their knowledge but like you said, the only person that knows your hair well is YOU. I’ve had HORRIBLE experiences since I was a child when it came to hair stylists, so I learned to take care of my hair myself. I taught myself how to do everything hair from braids, twists, silk presses, twists outs, etc… When I started my locs I let a loctician start them because I wanted a break for a little from just doing my hair, but this experience once again reminded me why I do my hair MYSELF!! I woulda saved myself the hassle & some money but it’s a learning experience.

Thank you for your video. I was trying to explain to my husband how I felt and he wasn’t getting. I have had locs before and I loved them I had over 100 locs. We went on a cruise and I decided to take my locs out because I wanted something different for my cruise……(BAD DECISION THAT I MAD)….. I started regretting that I got them taken out 😢I missed them. So I got locs again went through 3 starter phases and 3 loctitians. So on the 4th starter locs I got it is now 2 months I thought I liked them but now I don’t I realized that one half of my head loc size don’t look like the other size, I only have 85 locs and it’s not as full as I want it to be which now I’m comparing it to my first set of locs. Now I want to take these down and get the number of locs that I had before. I feel like these locs are goito be in my head for the rest of my life I should be able to get what I want now out of my locs.

I started my locs Jan 8th. First the owner that I set an appointment with had someone else do my locs that were clearly in training. The trainee parted my hair down the middle and did hand coil them to the ends. She clipped them and put me under the dryer after that the loctician owner twisted them and then put into a style. So the 2nd time which was time for a retwist the owner loctician it my hair in a style in the front and left the back out. Now remember I said she didn’t lock them all the way to the ends so my hair was puffy on the ends. I don’t have the type of hair to have ends left out so it looked horrible. After a week or two I took down the style in the front and just wore my hair out. I had so many people ask me why the loctician didn’t finish your hair and how much it looked so bad. I got on a fb loc page I follow and posted pics asking everyone’s opinion. Omg my feeling were all over the place when I got so many bad comments and people saying the same things like why didn’t she finish your hair. I searched for locticians and did research for 6mos and to have this happen upsets me so much. I looked at her social media sites pics and also looked at peoples hair she did while in the salon. No one’s hair looked like mine. Everyone was hand coiled or comb coiled to the ends. I’m just trying to figure out why she was so lazy with me. I set an appointment but canceled it after everyone told me to find another loctician. Now someone that I know who’s not a loctician said she going to repart my hair and make the locs fit my face. I’m trust her a lot so hopefully out of this I’ll be able to enjoy my loc journey. I was so upset

Oh my gosh I’m sorry to hear you had a negative experience. That’s so frustrating!!!! I hope this new person will take care of you and get you right. Stories like this is exactly why I learn to do my hair myself 😭

I’m like 4 weeks into my loc journey and I’ve felt like you in the beginning phase. I had parts that I didn’t like and changed myself and also some of the coils were too big and I split the size of the coil. I like my part that I have now and another thing I don’t like is the frizziness. I mean it’s too bad at times but everyday I wake I have to brush it with a soft brush or retwist some of them…. To kind of freshen them up. I work alot with the public and I can’t have my hair all frizzy. My hair is very soft…. And I have a few coils in the back that are beginning to loc in places of the coil. I tie my hair at night with a silk scarf. Do you have any suggestions for me other than what I’m doing right now? Thank you, Alicia

What you’re doing sounds good! Eventually it’ll loc, I know it may be hard to believe but it will. Give it time to do what it’s supposed to do-just leave it be and don’t manipulate it too much .

I just got my starter locs installed for the second time. The first time I had two strain twist, and my parts were too wide and I only had 59 twist. Went somewhere else and got comb coils and the stylist only used oil and water on my hair. I like a cleaner look to me it’s old school. I like the way the clean parts with gel look. Mind you my hair is like 3C/4A, so I’m going to have a lot of frizz. Im debating if I should give her another chance and bring in a loc gel for her to use, or just go to some one else? I now have 70 coils. Was hoping for at least 80 or more.

Prior to her stating your locs did you have a consultation? During the consultation she should have explained what products she would use on your hair. She may not use gel at all and if that’s the case you may want to go to someone else. But speak to her first & ask if she uses gel. I wouldn’t get too hung on the number of locs. Keep in mind what size you want your locs to be once they’re mature, your hair texture will play a huge part in that.

We talked over the phone, and I sent her pictures. She’s an older lady and she said she’s been doing locs over 30 years, so I just think she’s stuck in her way of doing things. She says the less product you use, the better. Maybe I should go to someone else. Thank you for your advice!😊❤️

@@laneeshanicole723 Ahh okay, people have various thoughts on using gel due to the possibility of build up. You can do a retwist with just water & oil but If you prefer the look of a retwist with gel being used then I would def look into another loctician. Never hesitant to ask questions and if it doesn’t work for you, look elsewhere!! ❤️❤️

Frizziness comes with the starter loc phase , there’s really nothing you can do about it. Once they mature the frizziness gets better. But embrace it! Frizziness is a sign that your locs are maturing
