Starting 3 Phase Motor on Single Phase Using a Run Capacitor across Phases, no VFD or Converter

Experiment with a 3 phase motor, using a capacitor across phases to "simulate" the 3rd phase and the motor will start in either direction. Long term use is not known, as this may cause overheating and can possibly damage motor. More research/experimenting needs to be done before this is put into use, but this demonstrates that in theory it should work. Do not attempt this or anything similar! Thanks for Watching!!!

I'm pretty sure this has been a clever "hack" known by many old wizards, where the correct wiring can hack the motor to power its own 3rd phase; obviously at significantly reduced power but.

Used this technique to run a 5 HP motor to use as a phase converter. I use a motor start capacitor of about 500 ufd to start it. Use a time delay relay to switch the start capacitor out after 5 seconds. Motor start caps are electrolytic and can't be used continuously. I run a milling machine, a 13 inch lathe, and a Do-all metal cutting bandsaw on this converter. Adding a run capacitor has minor effect on current draw. You need the larger capacitance to start it. I don't connect the 3 phase load until it is running. You should be able to do this for the end 3 phase device without the converter "idler". I think that is how the non-rotary converters work. Being able to run 3 phase motors on 220 single phase eliminates the need to change motors and provides instantaneous reversal of direction.

I was having a maybe crazy thought here, could you use a 120v motor to run that 3 phase motor as a generator to put out single phase 240? Still cool video man.

Hi. This has been done a lot by folks searching for free energy. They call it a rotoverter. Was invented by Hector Perez. It wont damage the motor. You can get great efficency this way. The downside is that you have a huge 3 phase motor doing the work of a much smaller motor, albeit at much higer efficency.
