Amazing video, crazy that both camshafts had slipping lobes, ive never seen that before nor would i habe ever thought to check
@EMSGARAGEE61 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I know right, thats definitely a first one for me, and it happening twice is just crazy😀
@karliszemitis3356 Жыл бұрын
@@EMSGARAGEE61 that is a fairly well-known thing on these engines. Not that they often spin the lobes, but the fact that it can happen. Also some 6cyl BMW did these type of cams.
@EMSGARAGEE61 Жыл бұрын
@@karliszemitis3356 i understand, did not know that😀

So the cam lobes are a press-fit? Why does BMW do this? Is it to avoid valve to piston damage if timing fails, or is it just cheaper to make?
@anishmahadeo5073 Жыл бұрын
@@sudnut probably to make it cheaper and lighter. Maybe for higher revs. They still seem to damage valves plenty of times

Veldig bra video! I just bought an old E90 316i for my daughter. It consumes a bit of oil though. I changed the pcv membrane, and now the oil consumption has gone from 1l to 0.5l per 1000km. Thinking of changing the valve stem seals, and your videos are very helpful! Where do you find the torque specs for BMWs? Also, do you know if the oil consumption could be from stuck piston oil rings?
@EMSGARAGEE61 Жыл бұрын
Its quite normal for these cars to burn oil when they are high mileage, but yeah possibility that the valve stem seals has become plastic due to age, that would be the next step, is the pcv system is new and there is no oil leakage
@EMSGARAGEE61 Жыл бұрын
Everything is possible, but firstly check is compression is within spec
@nitramh24 Жыл бұрын
@@EMSGARAGEE61 Thanks for the reply! I'll check the compression, but I also got the cheap compression tester from Biltema, and might have to get the expensive one with the correct fittings. I didn't plan on fixing this car up at all, but once I start spannering I go completely OCD😂 I've mostly done work on motorbikes before, especially building big bore Kawasaki zx-9r engines, which are way easier to work on (and better built) than BMW engines imho.

how can be coolant in oil sump? isnt it problem with gasket in oil cooler? i have N43 and im studying every second of yorur 3parts series about this engine. i was hoping for more! thank you a lot nice videos and production quality is getting better every time (light is very important)
@EMSGARAGEE61 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for good feedback, you are right, but in my case when I was removing the engine head, coolant from the head ended up in oil passage ways and on top of the pistons where then it ends up in the oil pan😊

Pressed on cam lobes are not one of the auto industry’s better ideas. I don’t know any company that didn’t have an issue with them at some point.
@EMSGARAGEE61 Жыл бұрын
I didn’t even know they exist before this project🙂
@JohnEvans-ct6mz Жыл бұрын
@@EMSGARAGEE61 Yep. I’ve been a tech for GM and VW/Audi here in the US for over 20 years. Both manufacturers use them and had issues. GM more so than VW of course.😂 The cams are usually a hollow tube with the pressed on lobes. It very much decreases rotational mass and improves engine efficiency.
