This week we are getting around to phase 2 of creating a border from scratch and I haven't got it easy. It would have been great to find a blank slate ready to start planting. Unfortunately this small area needs tree trunks removed, Oleander roots dug up, top soil mounded and rocks strategically placed to supply visible interest while the plants are young and small. So I called in the Big Guns (A.K.A. my husband Miguel) and between the two of us we manage to prepare the ground leaving me free then to stage the rocks and plant. I have to admit it felt really great to be out planting. Up the mountains where I live it is still on the early side, but down close to Madrid it is a lot warmer and the soil was not frozen and it felt so good to get my hands dirty with soil after the long winter. For structural plants I chose a range of colours and textures for all year around interest since these are evergreens. Coprosma Chocolate (Mirror plant), Abelia Kaleidescope, Santolina, Blue Star dwarf spruce, a couple of Agapanthus and then fluffed it with some Primulas and Campanulas. I also added some snapdragons, the only annuals. My son-in-law will now get busy with the surrounding area - namely repainting the wall that was repaired and changing the fence. I will return in 1 month to install a very basic irrigation system run off the tap with a programmed timer. This border has been created to basically take care of itself. It should only require attention twice a year.
